Plasma interaction at the interface between the magnetosheath and magnetosphere has been extensively studied during recent years. As a consequence various theoretical models have emerged. The impulsive penetration mechanism initially proposed by Lemaire and Roth as an alternative approach to the steady state reconnection, is a non-stationary model describing the processes which take place when a 3-D solar wind plasma irregularity interacts with the outer regions of the Earth's magnetosphere. In this paper we are reviewing the main features of the impulsive penetration mechanism and the role of the electric field in driving impulsive events. An alternative point of view and the controversy it has raised are discussed. We also review the numerical codes developed to simulate the impulsive transport of plasma across the magnetopause. They have illustrated the relationship between the magnetic field distribution and the convection of solar-wind plasma inside the magnetosphere and brought into perspective non-stationary phenomena (like instabilities and waves) which were not explicitly integrated in the early models of impulsive penetration. Numerical simulations devoted to these processes cover a broad range of approximations, from ideal MHD to hybrid and kinetic codes. The results show the limitation of these theories in describing the full range of phenomena observed at the magnetopause and magnetospheric boundary layers.  相似文献

The Sun is the most important energy source for the Earth. Since the incoming solar radiation is not equally distributed and peaks at low latitudes the climate system is continuously transporting energy towards the polar regions. Any variability in the Sun-Earth system may ultimately cause a climate change. There are two main variability components that are related to the Sun. The first is due to changes in the orbital parameters of the Earth induced by the other planets. Their gravitational perturbations induce changes with characteristic time scales in the eccentricity (~100,000 years), the obliquity (angle between the equator and the orbital plane) (~40,000 years) and the precession of the Earth’s axis (~20,000 years). The second component is due to variability within the Sun. A variety of observational proxies reflecting different aspects of solar activity show similar features regarding periodic variability, trends and periods of very low solar activity (so-called grand minima) which seem to be positively correlated with the total and the spectral solar irradiance. The length of these records ranges from 25 years (solar irradiance) to 400 years (sunspots). In order to establish a quantitative relationship between solar variability and solar forcing it is necessary to extend the records of solar variability much further back in time and to identify the physical processes linking solar activity and total and spectral solar irradiance. The first step, the extension of solar variability, can be achieved by using cosmogenic radionuclides such as 10Be in ice cores. After removing the effect of the changing geomagnetic field, a 9000-year long record of solar modulation was obtained. Comparison with paleoclimatic data provides strong evidence for a causal relationship between solar variability and climate change. It will be the subject of the next step to investigate the underlying physical processes that link solar variability with the total and spectral solar irradiance.  相似文献

An account is given of the observations and theoretical ideas concerning the role of kinetic processes in the solar wind. This includes, first of all, the measurements on distribution functions of plasma electrons and protons, the relation of the observed non-thermal electron features with the concept of an exospheric expansion of the solar corona, and the connection of non-thermal proton distributions with bulk flow inhomogeneities of the wind. A discussion is given of the present understanding of the connection between observed features of the particle distributions and anomalous values of some plasma transport coefficients, which in turn determine the actual values of macroscopic plasma parameters.A further topic of the review is that of possible kinetic processes occurring within small scale structures in the solar wind, like collisionless shocks, various types of discontinuities and D-sheets.  相似文献

The Sun's interplanetary magnetic field and the solar wind modulate the distribution of galactic cosmic-ray particles in the heliosphere. The particles diffuse inward, convert outward and have drifts in the motion of their gyro-centres. Irregularities in the IMF also scatter particles from their gyro-orbits. These processes are the components of solar modulation and produce streaming (and higher-order anisotropies) of particles in the heliosphere. The anisotropies can be investigated at the Earth by examining the count rates of cosmic-ray detectors. The anisotropic streams appear as diurnal variations in solar and sidereal time in the count rates. Higher-order anisotropies produce generally much smaller semi-diurnal and higher-order variations. Theoretical models of solar modulation predict effects that depend on the polarity of the Sun's magnetic dipole. The solar diurnal and north-south anisotropies can be used to test these predictions. This paper is a short review of analyses of 60 years of cosmic-ray data collected at the Earth for the solar and sidereal diurnal variations present. Past analyses have yielded interesting and controversial results regarding the rigidity spectra and components of these anisotropies. Some of the controversy remains today. Analyses of these anisotropies have also yielded quantitative information about parameters important to solar modulation, such as latitudinal and radial density gradients. The relatively new techniques used for these determinations are explained here. Calculations of these modulation parameters from Earth-based cosmic-ray detectors are reviewed and compared to spaceprobe measurements and theoretical predictions of their values. Recently, investigations of the sidereal and solar diurnal anisotropies have been combined to calculate mean-free-paths of cosmic rays in the heliosphere. The latest conclusions from these analyses are that the parallel mean-free-paths of cosmic rays may depend on the polarity of the Sun's magnetic field. The results of these investigations are included in this paper to indicate the present state of knowledge concerning this facet of cosmic-ray research. Now at Department of Physics, Shinshu University, 3-1-1 Asahi, Matsumoto 390, Japan.  相似文献

Exposure to the solar wind can have significant long term consequences for planetary atmospheres, especially for planets such as Mars that are not protected by global magnetospheres. Estimating the effects of solar wind exposure requires knowledge of the history of the solar wind. Much of what we know about the Sun’s past behavior is based on inferences from observations of young solar-like stars. Stellar analogs of the weak solar wind cannot be detected directly, but the interaction regions between these winds and the interstellar medium have been detected and used to estimate wind properties. I here review these observations, with emphasis on what they suggest about the history of the solar wind.  相似文献

The solar system is apparently stratified with regard to the contents of volatile constituents, as judged from the rocky, volatile-poor inner solar system planets and meteorites and the huge volatile-rich outer planets. However, beyond this gross structure there is no evidence for a systematic increase of the volatiles' abundances with distance from the Sun. Although meteorites show comparatively large differences in volatile element contents they also differ in many other respects, such as Mg/Si-ratios, bulk Fe and refractory element contents. These variations reflect variations in the nebular environment from which meteorites formed. The various conditions of meteorite formation cannot, however, be related in a simple way to heliocentric distances. There are also no systematic variations in the chemistry of the inner planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Moon, Mars, and including the fourth largest asteroid Vesta, that could be interpreted as a relationship between volatility and composition. Although Mars (as judged from the composition of Martian meteorites) is more oxidized and contains more volatile elements than Earth, this trend cannot be extrapolated to the dry volatile poor Vesta (sampled by HED meteorites) in the asteroid belt. If the Earth-Mars trend reflects global inner solar system gradients then Vesta must have formed inside Earth's orbit and moved out later to its present location. The quality of Mercury and Venus composition data is not sufficient to allow reliable extrapolation to distances closer to the Sun. Recent nebula models predict small temperature gradients in the inner solar system supporting the view that no large variations in volatile element contents of inner solar system materials are expected. The heating of the solar corona and therefore the generation of the solar wind, remain an active area of solar and heliophysics research. Several decades of in situ solar wind plasma observations have revealed a rich bimodal solar wind structure, well correlated with coronal magnetic field activity. Therefore, the reconnection processes associated with the large-scale dynamics of the corona likely play a major role in the generation of the slow solar wind flow regime. In order to elucidate the relationship between reconnection-driven coronal magnetic field structure and dynamics and the generation of the slow solar wind, this paper reviews the observations and phenomenology of the solar wind and coronal magnetic field structure. The geometry and topology of nested flux systems, and the (interchange) reconnection process, in the context of coronal physics is then explained. Once these foundations are laid out, the paper summarizes several fully dynamic, 3D MHD calculations of the global coronal system. Finally, the results of these calculations justify a number of important implications and conclusions on the role of reconnection in the structural dynamics of the coronal magnetic field and the generation of the solar wind.  相似文献

The ISEE-1 and 2 spacecraft contain two complementary experiments to measure the ambient electron density by radio techniques: a propagation experiment which measures the integrated electron density between ISEE-1 and 2, and a resonance sounder which measures the electron density in the vicinity of ISEE-1, and also provides AC electric field data. These experiments have been described elsewhere (Harvey et al., 1978). Results from these two experiments are presented here for the first time. The propagation experiment permits high time resolution studies of density fluctuations in the solar wind and magnetospheric frontier regions. The sounder experiment has detected for the first time plasma resonances in the solar wind and in the Earth's magnetosheath, as well as in the regions of the magnetosphere where resonances have already been observed by the spacecraft GEOS-1. We present here a preliminary review of the different types of electric field noise observed in the solar wind and magnetosheath, and discuss their relationship to the measured plasma density.CRPE/CNET, 92131 Issy-les-Moulineaux, France.  相似文献

A brief review of the salient considerations which apply to the existence of magnetic fields in connection with planetary and subplanetary objects in the outer solar system is given. Consideration is given to internal dynamo fields, fields which might originate from interaction with the solar wind or magnetospheres (externally driven dynamos) and lastly fossil magnetic fields such as have been discovered on the Moon. Where possible, connection is made between magnetism, means of detection, and internal body properties. This is one of the publications by the Science Advisory Group.  相似文献

A large-signal stability analysis of the solar array regulator system is performed to facilitate the design and analysis of a low-earth-orbit (LEO) satellite power system. The effective load characteristics of various control methods in the solar array regulator system, such as the constant power load, variable power load, constant voltage load, constant current load, and constant resistive load, are classified to analyze the large-signal stability. Then, using the state plane analysis technique, the large-signal behavior of the solar array system is portrayed and the stability of various equilibrium points is analyzed. Thus, this approach can be contributed to organize the optimal controller structure of the system by representing the relationship between the control method of the solar array regulator and the large-signal stability. For the verification of the proposed large-signal analysis, a solar array regulator system that consists of two 100 W parallel module buck converters has been built and tested using a real 200 W solar array.  相似文献

A review of the theoretical problems associated with preflare magnetic energy storage and conversion is presented. The review consists of three parts; preflare magnetic energy storage, magnetic energy conversion mechanisms, and preflare triggers. In Section 2, the relationship between magnetic energy storage and the electrodynamic coupling of the solar atmosphere is developed. By accounting for the electrodynamic coupling of the solar atmosphere, we are able to examine the fundamental problems associated with the concept of in situ versus remote magnetic-energy storage. Furthermore, this approach permits us to distinguish between the roles of local and global parameters in the storage process.Section 3 is focused on the conversion mechanisms that can explain, in principle, the rapid energy release of a flare. In addition, we discuss how electrodynamic coupling eventually dictates which mechanism(s) is responsible for releasing the stored magnetic energy, and how the global coupling dictates the final evolution of the relevant mechanism. Section 4 examines preflare triggers and Section 5, we examine the most promising directions for future research into the problem of magnetic-energy storage and conversion of the Sun.  相似文献

The past two decades have witnessed significant changes in our knowledge of long-term solar and solar wind activity. The sunspot number time series (1700-present) developed by Rudolf Wolf during the second half of the 19th century was revised and extended by the group sunspot number series (1610–1995) of Hoyt and Schatten during the 1990s. The group sunspot number is significantly lower than the Wolf series before ~1885. An effort from 2011–2015 to understand and remove differences between these two series via a series of workshops had the unintended consequence of prompting several alternative constructions of the sunspot number. Thus it has been necessary to expand and extend the sunspot number reconciliation process. On the solar wind side, after a decade of controversy, an ISSI International Team used geomagnetic and sunspot data to obtain a high-confidence time series of the solar wind magnetic field strength (\(B\)) from 1750-present that can be compared with two independent long-term (> ~600 year) series of annual \(B\)-values based on cosmogenic nuclides. In this paper, we trace the twists and turns leading to our current understanding of long-term solar and solar wind activity.  相似文献

A review is given of the activities of the working group on small scale features at the 2nd SOHO Workshop on Elba, 27 September–1 October 1993. The small scale and filamentary structure of the solar transition region, and possibly also the corona, was pointed out. The reported observations furthermore demonstrated that the upper solar atmosphere is strongly dynamical, containing rapidly flowing gas and with features changing with time. Theoretical concepts and simulations of conditions in the transition region and corona were presented and discussed. Finally some ideas on future observations and modelling were put forward.  相似文献

Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) form as a consequence of the compression of the solar wind at the interface between fast speed streams and slow streams. Dynamic interaction of solar wind streams is a general feature of the heliospheric medium; when the sources of the solar wind streams are relatively stable, the interaction regions form a pattern which corotates with the Sun. The regions of origin of the high speed solar wind streams have been clearly identified as the coronal holes with their open magnetic field structures. The origin of the slow speed solar wind is less clear; slow streams may well originate from a range of coronal configurations adjacent to, or above magnetically closed structures. This article addresses the coronal origin of the stable pattern of solar wind streams which leads to the formation of CIRs. In particular, coronal models based on photospheric measurements are reviewed; we also examine the observations of kinematic and compositional solar wind features at 1 AU, their appearance in the stream interfaces (SIs) of CIRs, and their relationship to the structure of the solar surface and the inner corona; finally we summarise the Helios observations in the inner heliosphere of CIRs and their precursors to give a link between the optical observations on their solar origin and the in-situ plasma observations at 1 AU after their formation. The most important question that remains to be answered concerning the solar origin of CIRs is related to the origin and morphology of the slow solar wind. The composition of the solar photosphere is believed to be uniform. Indeed a quantity that does not vary with solar surface location or with a particular solar feature, i.e., no observational evidence is available to indicate that the photospheric composition near the solar equator is different from the photospheric composition near the solar poles or that the photospheric composition in quiet regions is different from the composition in active regions. In contrast, the composition of the solar upper atmosphere is not well defined. Solar composition work in recent decades has brought the recognition that there are systematic differences between the composition of the corona and the photosphere and revealed evidence for spatial and time variability in the composition of various coronal features. We review the spectroscopic techniques used and the progress that was made in recent years in deriving the plasma compositions of various solar upper atmosphere structures. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The Ulysses spacecraft has been orbiting the Sun on a highly inclined ellipse almost perpendicular to the ecliptic plane (inclination 79°, perihelion distance 1.3 AU, aphelion distance 5.4 AU) since it encountered Jupiter in 1992. The in situ dust detector on board continuously measured interstellar dust grains with masses up to 10−13 kg, penetrating deep into the solar system. The flow direction is close to the mean apex of the Sun’s motion through the solar system and the grains act as tracers of the physical conditions in the local interstellar cloud (LIC). While Ulysses monitored the interstellar dust stream at high ecliptic latitudes between 3 and 5 AU, interstellar impactors were also measured with the in situ dust detectors on board Cassini, Galileo and Helios, covering a heliocentric distance range between 0.3 and 3 AU in the ecliptic plane. The interstellar dust stream in the inner solar system is altered by the solar radiation pressure force, gravitational focussing and interaction of charged grains with the time varying interplanetary magnetic field. We review the results from in situ interstellar dust measurements in the solar system and present Ulysses’ latest interstellar dust data. These data indicate a 30° shift in the impact direction of interstellar grains w.r.t. the interstellar helium flow direction, the reason of which is presently unknown.  相似文献

In the last 45 years I have studied the thermal structure of the atmosphere from the thermosphere down to the stratosphere, and found evidence of its variability in relationship with the change of solar irradiation during the 11-year solar cycle. I would review, in the light of recent model results, the measurements which I had made since the 1960s and which, for some of them, did not find any explanation at the time of their publication. The data were obtained by two different techniques, rockets and lidars and correspond to different regions of the atmosphere from the upper thermosphere to the stratosphere. The expectation was until recently that the atmosphere should be warmed by an increase of solar flux in the course of the solar cycle due to the increase of UV flux. It has been shown to be the case in the tropical stratosphere and at all latitudes in the upper thermosphere. But, at high and mid latitudes and at other altitudes, the reverse situation was found to exist and, until recently, this cooling observed in parts of the atmosphere with increasing solar flux had never been simulated by models. In addition to reviewing our own data, the paper will present recent results using other dataset which support our observations. It is only recently that we succeeded with a model able to tune the forcing by planetary waves at the tropopause level and thus reproduce such behaviour.  相似文献

This review is concerned with relativistic electron events observed in interplanetary space. The different types of event are identified and illustrated. The relationships between solar X-ray and radio emissions and relativistic electrons are examined, and the relevance of the observations to solar flare acceleration models is discussed. A statistical analysis of electron spectra, the electron/proton ratio and propagation from the flare site to the Earth is presented. A model is outlined which can account for the release of electrons from the Sun in a manner consistent with observations of energetic solar particles and electromagnetic solar radiation. The literature survey for this review was concluded in May 1973.  相似文献

This review is concerned with the interplanetary ‘transmission line’ between the Sun and the Earth's magnetosphere. It starts with comments about coronal mass ejections (CMEs) that are associated with various forms of solar activities. It then continues with some of the current views about their continuation through the heliosphere to Earth and elsewhere. The evolution of energy, mass, and momentum transfer is of prime interest since the temporal/spatial/magnitude behavior of the interplanetary electric field and transient solar wind dynamic pressure is relevant to the magnetospheric response (the presence or absence of geomagnetic storms and substorms) at Earth. Energetec particle flux predictions are discussed in the context of solar activity (flares, prominence eruptions) at various positions on the solar disk relative to Earth's central meridian. A number of multi-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) models, applied to the solar, near-Sun, and interplanetary portions of the ‘transmission line’, are discussed. These model simulations, necessary to advancing our understanding beyond the phenomenological or morphological stages, are directed to deceptively simple questions such as the following: can one-to-one associations be made between specific forms of solar activity and magnetosphere response?  相似文献
