Spall caused by hypervelocity impacts at the lower range of velocities could result in significant damage to spacecraft. A number of polycrystalline alloys, used in spacecraft manufacturing, exhibit a pronounced anisotropy in their mechanical properties. The aluminium alloy AA 7010, whose orthotropy is a consequence of the meso-scale phase distribution or grain morphology, has been chosen for this investigation. The material failure observed in plate impact was simulated using a number of spall models. The Hugoniot elastic limit and spall strength have been studied as a function of orientation, and compared to experimental results.  相似文献

The 0.91-m Spacewatch Telescope of the Steward Observatory of the University of Arizona on Kitt Peak is dedicated to scanning with charge-coupled devices (CCDs) during the dark half of the month. We explored six modes of using CCDs for searches of gamma-ray bursters, debris in geosynchronous space, satellites of asteroids, brown dwarfs, the tenth planet, comets, cometesimals, and various types of asteroids. In the process, we gained experience with cosmic rays and artifacts in CCD observations. Each of these topics is described. I especially note that the existence of cometesimals has not been confirmed by the Spacewatch Telescope, contrary to reports published by others. This paper describes a new discipline in astrophysics, scannerscopy, of surveying with a CCD rather than with photography at a Schmidt telescope. It uses the CCD in scanning rather than in sequencing of stare exposures as is done at most observatories. This may save telescope time, and flat-fielding is rarely needed. Usually we turn the drive off, but the scanning can be done with the telescope moving. In any case, the motion on the sky is precisely followed by slaving the charge transfer of the CCD to the drift rate of the image, while the CCD is read out continuously during the observing. Our primary application of CCD scanning is on moving objects such as comets and asteroids. We also do routine astronomy with CCDs, in a transit method, and this yields a precision of better than ±0.7 arc sec.We presently use a Tektronix 2048×2048 CCD, 38 arc min wide, to a limiting magnitude ofV=20.5 (6 detection). This is successful even for discovering rare and small near-Earth asteroids. 1990 UN with a diameter of 90 m and 1991 BA at 9 m are the smallest natural objects observed outside the Earth's atmosphere to date. In a month with good conditions we find typically 2000 new main-belt asteroids and, on average, nearly two near-Earth asteroids. Only the latter are followed up with astrometry. The goal is to study magnitude-frequency relations, as well as to complete the inventory of dangerous impactors on Earth. We are designing a new CCD-scanning telecope to become an order-of-magnitude more effective in the discovery of elusive objects than the Spacewatch Telescope. The paper also describes possibilities with cameras on spacecraft that pass through the asteroid belt; thousands of small asteroids can be observed with the CCDs of CRAF and CASSINI.  相似文献

Future of Space Astronomy: A global Road Map for the next decades   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The use of space techniques continues to play a key role in the advance of astrophysics by providing access to the entire electromagnetic spectrum from radio to high energy γ rays. The increasing size, complexity and cost of large space observatories places a growing emphasis on international collaboration. Furthermore, combining existing and future datasets from space and “ground based” observatories is an emerging mode of powerful and relatively inexpensive research to address problems that can only be tackled by the application of large multi-wavelength observations. While the present set of astronomical facilities is impressive and covers the entire electromagnetic spectrum, with complementary space and “ground based” telescopes, the situation in the next 10–20 years is of critical concern. The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), to be launched not earlier than 2018, is the only approved future major space astronomy mission. Other major highly recommended space astronomy missions, such as the Wide-field Infrared Survey Telescope (WFIRST), the International X-ray Observatory (IXO), Large Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) and the Space Infrared Telescope for Cosmology and Astrophysics (SPICA), have yet to be approved for development.  相似文献

The Heavy Ion Counter on the Galileo spacecraft will monitor energetic heavy nuclei of the elements from C to Ni, with energies from 6 to 200 MeV nucl-1. The instrument will provide measurements of trapped heavy ions in the Jovian magnetosphere, including those high-energy heavy ions with the potential for affecting the operation of the spacecraft electronic circuitry. We describe the instrument, which is a modified version of the Voyager CRS instrument.  相似文献

We suggest that LISA Pathfinder, a technology demonstrator for the future gravitational wave observatory LISA, could be used to carry out a direct experimental test of Modified Newtonian Dynamics (MOND). The LISA Pathfinder spacecraft is currently being built and the launch date is just a few years away. No modifications of the spacecraft are required, nor any interference with its nominal mission. The basic concept is to fly LISA Pathfinder through the region around the Sun-Earth saddle point, in an extended mission phase, once the original mission goals are achieved. We examine various strategies to reach the saddle point, and find that the preferred strategy, yielding relatively short transfer times of just over 1 year, probably involves a lunar fly-by. LISA Pathfinder will be able to probe the intermediate MOND regime, i.e. the transition between deep MOND and Newtonian gravity. We present robust estimates of the anomalous gravity gradients that LISA Pathfinder should be exposed to, based on MONDian effects as derived from the Tensor-Vector-Scalar (TeVeS) theory. The spacecraft speed and spatial scale of the MOND signal combine in a way that the spectral signature of the signal falls precisely into LISA Pathfinder’s measurement bandwidth. We find that if the gravity gradiometer on-board the spacecraft achieves its currently predicted sensitivity, these anomalous gradients could not just be detected, but measured in some detail.  相似文献

We present a review of the Supergiant Fast X-ray Transients (SFXT) Project, a systematic investigation of the properties of SFXTs with a strategy that combines Swift monitoring programs with outburst follow-up observations. This strategy has quickly tripled the available sets of broad-band data of SFXT outbursts, and gathered a wealth of out-of-outburst data, which have led us to a broad-band spectral characterization, an assessment of the fraction of the time these sources spend in each phase, and their duty cycle of inactivity. We present some new observational results obtained through our outburst follow-ups, as fitting examples of the exceptional capabilities of Swift in catching bright flares and monitor them panchromatically.  相似文献

Plants can provide a means for removing carbon dioxide (CO2) while generating oxygen (O2) and clean water for life support systems in space. To study this, 20 m2 stands of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) plants were grown in a large (113 m3 vol.), atmospherically closed chamber. Photosynthetic uptake of CO2 by the stands was detected about 10 DAP (days after planting), after which photosynthetic rates rose rapidly as stand ground cover and total light interception increased. Photosynthetic rates peaked ca. 50 DAP near 45 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 under 865 μmol m−2 s−1 PPF (average photosynthetic photon flux), and near 35 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 under 655 μmol m−2 s−1 PPF. Short term changes in PPF caused a linear response in stand photosynthetic rates up to 1100 μmol m−2 s−1 PPF, with a light compensation point of 185 μmol m−2 s−1 PPF. Comparisons of stand photosynthetic rates at different CO2 concentrations showed a classic C3 response, with saturation occurring near 1200 μmol mol−1 CO2 and compensation near 100 μmol mol−1 CO2. In one study, the photoperiod was changed from 12 h light/12 h dark to continuous light at 58 DAP. This caused a decrease in net photosynthetic rates within 48 h and eventual damage (scorching) of upper canopy leaves, suggesting the abrupt change stressed the plants and/or caused feedback effects on photosynthesis. Dark period (night) respiration rates increased during early growth as standing biomass increased and peaked near 9 μmol CO2 m−2 s−1 ca. 50 DAP, after which rates declined gradually with age. Stand transpiration showed a rapid rise with canopy ground cover and peaked ca. 50 DAP near 8.9 L m−2 d−1 under 860 μmol m−2 s−1 PPF and near 6.3 L m−2 d−1 under 650 μmol m−2 s−1 PPF. Based on the best photosynthetic rates from these studies, approximately 25 m2 of potato plants under continuous cultivation would be required to support the CO2 removal and O2 requirements for one person.  相似文献
