The chlorophyll concentration of a water body is an important proxy for representing the phytoplankton biomass. Its estimation from multi or hyper-spectral remote sensing data in natural waters is generally achieved by using (i) the waveband ratioing in two or more bands in the blue-green or (ii) by using a combination of the radiance peak position and magnitude in the red-near-infrared (NIR) spectrum. The blue-green ratio algorithms have been extensively used with satellite ocean color data to investigate chlorophyll distributions in open ocean and clear waters and the application of red-NIR algorithms is often restricted to turbid productive water bodies. These issues present the greatest obstacles to our ability to formulate a modern robust method suitable for quantitative assessments of the chlorophyll concentration in a diverse range of water types. The present study is focused to investigate the normalized water-leaving radiance spectra in the visible and NIR region and propose a robust algorithm (Generalized ABI, GABI algorithm) for chlorophyll concentration retrieval based on Algal Bloom index (ABI) which separates phytoplankton signals from other constituents in the water column. The GABI algorithm is validated using independent in-situ data from various regional to global waters and its performance is further evaluated by comparison with the blue-green waveband ratios and red-NIR algorithms. The results revealed that GABI yields significantly more accurate chlorophyll concentrations (with uncertainties less than 13.5%) and remains more stable in different waters types when compared with the blue-green waveband ratios and red-NIR algorithms. The performance of GABI is further demonstrated using HICO images from nearshore turbid productive waters and MERIS and MODIS-Aqua images from coastal and offshore waters of the Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and East China Sea.  相似文献

The present work is an attempt to evaluate the impact of changing space weather condition over sub-auroral ionosphere during high solar activity year 2014. In view of this, the GPS based TEC along with Ionosonde data over Indian permanent scientific base “Maitri”, Antarctica (70°46′00″S, 11°43′56″E) has been utilized. The results suggested that the nature of ionospheric responses to the geomagnetic disturbances not only depended upon the status of high latitudinal electro-dynamic processes but also influenced by the seasonal variations. The results revel both negative and positive type of ionospheric response in a single year but during different seasons. The study suggested that the combination of equator-ward plasma transportation along with ionospheric compositional changes causes a negative ionospheric impact especially during summer and equinox seasons. However, the combination of pole-ward contraction of the oval region along with particle precipitation may lead to exhibit positive ionospheric response during the winter season. The plasma transportation direction has been validated with the help of convection boundary (HM boundary) deduced with the help of SuperDARN observations. The ground based ionosonde observations clearly provided the evidence of deep penetration of high energetic particles up to the E-layer heights which results a sudden and strong appearance of E-layer. The strengthening of E-layer is responsible for modification of auroral electrojet and field-aligned current system. Also, the sudden appearance of E-layer along with a decrease in F-layer electron density suggested the dominance of NO+ over O+ in a considered region under geomagnetic disturbed condition.  相似文献

The characteristics of nighttime ionospheric scintillations measured at the L-band frequency of 1.575 GHz over Dibrugarh (27.5°N, 95°E, MLAT  17°N, 43° dip) during the ascending half of the solar cycle 24 from 2010 to 2014 have been investigated and the results are presented in this paper. The measurement location is within or outside the zone of influence of the equatorial ionization anomaly depending on solar and geomagnetic activity. Maximum scintillation is observed in the equinoxes irrespective of solar activity with clear asymmetry between March and September. The occurrence frequency in the solstices shifts from minimum in the June solstice in low solar activity to a minimum in the December solstice in high solar activity years. A significant positive correlation of occurrence of scintillations in the June solstice with solar activity has been observed. However, earlier reports from the Indian zone (~75°E) indicate negative or no correlation of scintillation in June solstice with solar activity. Scintillations activity/occurrence in solstices indicates a clear positive correlation with Es recorded simultaneously by a collocated Ionosonde. In equinoxes, maximum scintillations occur in the pre-midnight hours while in solstices the occurrence frequency peaks just after sunset. The incidence of strong scintillations (S4  0.4) increases with increase in solar activity. Strong (S4  0.4) ionospheric scintillations accompanied by TEC depletions in the pre-midnight period is attributed to equatorial irregularities whereas the dusk period scintillations are related to the sporadic-E activity. Present results thus indicate that the current location at the northern edge of the EIA behaves as low as well as mid-latitude location.  相似文献

The GOES Precipitation Index (GPI) technique (Arkin, 1979) for rainfall estimation has been in operation for the last three decades. However, its applications are limited to the larger temporal and spatial scales. The present study focuses on the augmentation on GPI technique by incorporating a moisture factor for the environmental correction developed by Vicente et al. (1998). It consists of two steps; in the first step the GPI technique is applied to the Kalpana-IR data for rainfall estimation over the Indian land and oceanic region and in the second step an environmental moisture correction factor is applied to the GPI-based rainfall to estimate the final rainfall. Detailed validation with rain gauges and comparison with Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) merged data product (3B42) are performed and it is found that the present technique is able to estimate the rainfall with better accuracy than the GPI technique over higher temporal and spatial domains for many operational applications in and around the Indian regions using Indian geostationary satellite data. Further comparison with the Doppler Weather Radar shows that the present technique is able to retrieve the rainfall with reasonably good accuracy.  相似文献

We study the Propagation and damping properties of Alfvén gravity waves in the presence of the vertical magnetic field in the viscous solar plasma under influence of the background flow by deriving a fourth order dispersion relation in terms of the Doppler shifted frequency. We derive the dispersion relation under WKB and Boussinesq approximation. We study the damping of Alfvén gravity waves for the wave frequencies less than and greater than the Brunt-Väisälä frequency. We find that the Brunt-Väisälä frequency divides the frequency ranges where the weakly or strongly damped oscillations occur. The background flow exhibits a strong effect on weakly damped oscillations and a weak effect on the strongly damped oscillations. We also notice that the damping of both the strong and weakly damped oscillations depend on the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and wave number. The effect of the background flow is also being governed by the Brunt-Väisälä frequency and wave number. We also study the properties of gravity wave mode after filtering the Alfvén wave mode by minimizing the magnetic field and noticed that the background flow shows a very strong effect on the gravity wave mode.  相似文献

One-to-one relation with its causative lightning discharges and propagation features of night-time whistlers recorded at low-latitude station, Allahabad (geomag. lat. 16.05°N, = 1.08), India, from continuous observations made during 1–7 April, 2011 have been studied. The whistler observations were made using the Automatic Whistler Detector (AWD) system and AWESOME VLF receiver. The causative lightning strikes of whistlers were checked in data provided by World-Wide Lightning Location Network (WWLLN). A total of 32 whistlers were observed out of which 23 were correlated with their causative lightnings in and around the conjugate location (geom. lat. 9.87°S) of Allahabad. A multi-flash whistler is also observed on 1 April with dispersions 15.3, 17.5 and 13.6 s1/2. About 70% (23 out of 32) whistlers were correlated with the WWLLN detected causative lightnings in the conjugate region which supports the ducted mode of propagation at low latitude. The multi-flash and short whistlers also propagated most likely in the ducted mode to this station.  相似文献

We review the observational and theoretical results on the physics of microwave bursts that occur in the solar atmosphere. We particularly emphasize the advances made in burst physics over the last few years with the great improvement in spatial and time resolution especially with instruments like the NRAO three element interferometer, Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope and more recently the Very Large Array (VLA).We review the observations on pre-flare build-up of an active region at centimeter wavelengths. In particular we discuss the observations that in addition to the active region undergoing brightness and polarization changes on time scales of the order of an hour before a flare, there can be a change of the sense of polarization of a component of the relevant active region situated at the same location as the flare, implying the emergence of a flux of reverse polarity at coronal levels. The intensity distribution of cm- bursts is similar to that of soft X-ray and hard X-ray bursts. Indeed, it appears that the flaring behavior of the Sun at cm wavelengths is similar to that of some other cosmic transients such as flare stars and X-ray bursters. We discuss three distinct phases in the evolution of cm bursts, namely, impulsive phase, post-burst phase, and gradual rise and fall. The radiation mechanism for the impulsive phase of the microwave burst is gyrosynchrotron emission from mildly relativistic electrons that are accelerated near the energy release site and spiral in the strong magnetic field in the low corona. The details of the velocity distribution function of the energetic electrons and its time evolution are not known. We review the spectral characteristics for two kinds of velocity distribution, e.g., Maxwellian and Maxwellian with a power law tail for the energetic electrons. In the post-burst phase the energetic electrons are gradually thermalized. The thermal plasma released in the energy release region as well as the expanded parts of the overheated upper chromosphere may alter the emission mechanism. Thus, in the post-burst phase, depending on the average density and temperature of the thermal plasma, the emission mechanism may change from gyrosynchrotron to collisional bremsstrahlung from a thermal plasma. The gradual rise and fall (GFR) burst represents the heating of a flare plasma to temperatures of the order of 106 K, in association with a flare or an X-ray transient following a filament disruption. We discuss the flux density spectra of centimeter bursts. The great majority of the bursts have a single spectral maximum, commonly around 6 cm- The U-shaped signature sometimes found in cm-dcm burst spectrum of large bursts is believed to a be a reflection of only the fact that there are two different sources of burst radiation, one for cm- and the other for dcm-, with different electron energy distributions and different magnetic fields.Observations of fine structures with temporal resolutionof 10–100 ms in the intensity profiles of cm- bursts are described. The existence of such fine time structures imply brightness temperatures in burst sources of order 1015 K; their interpretation in terms of gyrosynchrotron measuring or the coherent interaction of upper hybrid waves excited by percipitating electron beams in a flaring loop is discussed.High spatial resolution observations (a few seconds of arc to 1 arc) are discussed, with special reference to the one- and two-dimensional maps of cm burst sources. The dominance of one sense of circular polarization in some weak 6 cm bursts and its interpretation in terms of energetic electrons confined in an asymmetric magnetic loop is discussed. Two-dimensional snapshot maps obtained with the VLA show that multi-peak impulsive 6 cm burst phase radiation originates from several arcades of loops and that the burst source often occupies a substantial portion of the flaring loop, and is not confined strictly to the top of the loop. This phenomenon is interpreted in terms of the trapping of energetic electrons due to anomalous doppler resonance instability and the characteristic scale length of the magnetic field variation along the loop. The VLA observations also indicate that the onset of the impulsive phase of a 6 cm burst can be associated with the appearance of a new system of loops. The presence of two loop systems with opposite polarities or a quadrupole field configuration is reminiscent of flare models in which a current sheet develops in the interface between two closed loops. We provide an extensive review of the emission and absorption processes in thermal and non-thermal velocity distributions. Unlike the thermal plasma where absorption and emission are inter-related through Kirchoff's law, the radiation emitted from a small population of non-thermal electrons can be reabsorbed from the same electrons (self-absorption) or from the background (thermal) electrons through gyro-resonance absorption, and free-free absorption. We also suggest that the non-thermal electrons can be unstable and these instabilities can be the source of very high brightness temperature, fine structure ( 10 ms) pulsations. Finally in the last part of this review we present several microwave burst models-the magnetic trap model, the two-component model, thermal model and the flaring loop model and give a critical discussion of the strength and weakness of these models.  相似文献

This paper examines the criteria for selecting the orbital and attitude prediction accuracy requirements for communications satellites. The accuracy requirements have been analyzed in terms of the various space operations involved, e.g., satellite acquisition, guidance and control, communications, telemetry, and command. It is hoped that the findings of this investigation will prove useful in satellite mission planning and design, thereby facilitating a judicious choice of the various satellite and ground components of the related subsystems.  相似文献

Doppler ultrasound is frequently used for monitoring circulating microbubbles during decompression to assess the symptoms of Decompression Sickness (DCS). This analysis was carried out to evaluate its effectiveness for screening symptoms of DCS during simulated extravehicular activities (EVA). The information from various hypobaric chamber studies carried out at the NASA Johnson Space Center, Houston, TX was used in this analysis (n = 516). The circulating microbubbles were detected in the precordial area in 42% (218/516), and symptoms were reported in 16% (81/516) of these exposures. The accuracy of Doppler-detectable bubbles (Spencer grades) on all symptoms of DCS was examined by calculating measures of sensitivity and specificity. The efficacy of Doppler as a screening device was examined by calculating their positive predictive value (PPV) and negative predictive value (NPV). The results of these analyses indicated that the sensitivity of Doppler decreased, and the PPV increased with higher Spencer grades. However, the likelihood of detecting true negative cases (NPV) was consistently higher with all bubble grades. Due to the high false-positive rate and low prior probabilities of the risk of DCS, Doppler was found to be more useful to identify those who did not develop DCS, than to detect positive cases of DCS in the simulated EVA exposures.  相似文献
