Close to the current solar activity minimum, two large solar cosmic ray ground-level enhancements (GLE) were recorded by the worldwide network of neutron monitors (NM). The enormous GLE on 20 January 2005 is the largest increase observed since the famous GLE in 1956, and the solar cosmic-ray event recorded on 13 December 2006 is among the largest in solar cycle 23. From the recordings of the NMs during the two GLEs, we determined the characteristics of the solar particle flux near Earth.  相似文献

Cosmic rays provide a diagnostic tool to analyze processes in interplanetary space and at the Sun. Cosmic rays also directly affect the terrestrial environment and serve as indicators of solar variability and non anthropogenic climatic changes on Earth at present and in the distant past. After the invention of the neutron monitor by John A. Simpson in 1948, an international network of cosmic ray detectors developed in a cooperative effort to examine temporal and spatial variations in our space environment. The resulting datasets represent the longest continuous, high time resolution series of particle radiation measurement in space science. At present, the neutron monitor network is complemented by spacecraft instrumentation to study solar-terrestrial correlated phenomena. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We will review analytical and numerical efforts in modelling the influence of curvature on coronal loop oscillations. We will mainly focus our attention on fast kink mode oscillations. A curved slab model will be presented, where it becomes clear that curvature introduces wave leakage into the system, because of changes in the equilibrium. The importance of leakage will be assessed through the use of a slab and cylindrical model where lateral leakage is allowed. A full analytical model for a semi-toroidal loop will be constructed for a system with no leaking waves but with an inhomogeneous layer that introduces damping due to the process of resonant absorption. The model for a semi-toroidal loop will be extended to also include leakage, and will be studied numerically. The numerical results will be compared to the analytical model.  相似文献

The recognition in 1980 of a signature of an extraterrestrial impact at the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary and its apparent involvement with the mass extinction generated considerable enthusiasm for impacts at other mass extinctions. Numerous claims of impact evidence for the Permo-Triassic mass extinction (251.6 Ma), the largest of the Phanerozoic mass extinctions, have generally been rejected, found wanting, or been difficult to reproduce. Despite this lack of repeatable support, considerable available evidence is consistent with an impact, including the rapidity of extinction, coincident carbon shift, and evident correlation between terrestrial and marine extinctions. However attractive the hypothesis, the coincidence with the Siberian flood basalts and the complex nature of the carbon shift are in conflict with an impact. The most intriguing possibility is that the greatest mass extinction of the Phanerozoic left signals very similar to the end-Cretaceous mass extinction but was produced by entirely Earth-bound processes. If true, this would tell us far more about the nature of ecosystems and how they fail than would identification of another impact.  相似文献

This review summarizes the history of cosmic ray research at Jungfraujoch, the installation of three neutron monitors in Switzerland, and highlights a few of the main results by the Cosmic Ray Group of the Physikalisches Institut, Universität Bern, Switzerland. In addition, the outstanding scientific and personal contribution of the late Hermann Debrunner, the longtime leader of the Bern Cosmic Ray Group, is honored.  相似文献
