With data of satellite INTERCOSMOS-BULGARIA-1300 northern and corresponding southern hemisphere plasma densities have been compared. Southern densities are greater in the ?90 to ?180 and +30 to +120° ranges. The opposite is true for ?60 to +30°. No asymmetry has been observed during daytime. These results are explained by the variations of the magnetic declination.  相似文献

Atmospheric leakage between a CELSS and its surround is driven by the differential pressure between the two. In an earth-based CELSS, both negative and positive differential pressures of atmosphere are created as the resultant of three influences: thermal expansion/contraction, transition of water between liquid and vapor phases, and external barometric pressure variations. The resultant may typically be on the order of 5000 pascals. By providing a flexible expansion chamber, the differential pressure range can be reduced two, or even three, orders of magnitude, which correspondingly reduces the leakage. The expansion chamber itself can also be used to measure the leak rate. Independent confirmation is possible by measurement of the progressive dilution of a trace gas. These methods as employed at the Biosphere 2 facility have resulted in an estimated atmospheric leak rate of less than 10 percent per year.  相似文献

The efforts in scientific ballooning in India have always been focussed towards continuous upgrading of capabilities in all aspects of balloon flights - balloon material, balloon fabrication, launch techniques, heavy payload launch, telemetry, telecommand and other ground facilities - to meet the growing demands of the scientific community. Convection plays a significant role in determining the electronic properties of semiconductor crystals grown from the melt. Inhomogeneities (doping striations) in these crystals can be caused by unsteady natural convection. Therefore, the origins of unsteady natural convection, which means fluctuating temperatures in a fluid, are investigated in this paper. Several effects have been found at increasing Rayleigh numbers Ra which cause fluctuating temperatures. But it was also observed, that unsteady convection became again steady if Ra was increased to higher values. This effect, which is called relaminarization, is very interesting for crystal growth and is discussed in this paper.  相似文献

Photosynthetic flagellates are among the most intensely studied unicellular organisms in the field of graviperception and gravitaxis. While the phenomenon of graviorientation has been known for many decades, only recently was the molecular mechanism unveiled. Earlier hypotheses tried to explain the precise orientation by a passive buoy mechanism assuming the tail end to be heavier than the front. In the photosynthetic flagellate Euglena gracilis, the whole cell body is denser than the surrounding medium, pressing onto the lower cell membrane where it seems to activate mechanosensitive ion channels specific for calcium. The calcium entering the cells during reorientation can be visualized by the fluorescence probe, Calcium Crimson. Cyclic AMP is likewise involved in the molecular pathway. Inhibitors of calcium channels and ionophores impair gravitaxis while caffeine, a blocker of the phosphodiesterase, enhances the precision of orientation.  相似文献

There is strong evidence that gravitactic orientation in flagellates and ciliates is mediated by an active physiological gravireceptor rather than by passive alignment of the cells in the water column. In flagellates the threshold for graviorientation was found to be at 0.12 x g on a slow rotating centrifuge during the IML-2 mission on the Shuttle Columbia and a subsequent parabolic rocket flight (TEXUS). During the IML-2 mission no adaptation to microgravity was observed over the duration of the space flight, while gravitaxis was lost in a terrestrial closed environmental system over the period of almost two years. Sedimenting statoliths are not likely to be involved in graviperception because of the small size of the cells and their rotation around the longitudinal axis during forward locomotion. Instead the whole cytoplasmic content of the cell, being heavier than the surrounding aqueous medium (1.05 g/ml), exerts a pressure on the lower membrane. This force activates stretch-sensitive calcium specific ion channels which can be inhibited by the addition of gadolinium which therefore abolishes gravitaxis. The channels seem to mainly allow calcium ions to pass since gravitaxis is blocked by the addition of the calcium ionophore A23187 and by vanadate which blocks the Ca-ATPase in the cytoplasmic membrane. Recently, a gene for a mechanosensitive channel, originally sequenced for Saccharomyces, was identified in Euglena by PCR. The increase in intracellular free calcium during reorientation can be visualized by the fluorophore Calcium Crimson using laser excitation and image intensification. This result was confirmed during recent parabolic flights. The gated calcium changes the membrane potential across the membrane which may be the trigger for the reorientation of the flagellum. cAMP plays a role as a secondary messenger. Photosynthetic flagellates are suitable candidates for life support systems since they absorb CO2 and produce oxygen. Preliminary experiments are discussed.  相似文献

Investigations conducted earlier by the authors have established that due to the steady-state field of body forces, convection is capable of giving rise to macroinhomogeneity in transverse impurity distribution in crystals. In the case of semiconductor materials the maximal value of this inhomogeneity is due to a weak convection in the melt, typical of low-gravity conditions. However, in addition to steady gravitational convection, other factors ignored previously, may also be employed in conducting experiments in low-g environments. The present paper discusses the results of theoretical studies of some factors influencing impurity distribution in the melt and the crystal.  相似文献

Planetary and gravity waves contribute significantly to the variability of atmospheric parameters in the middle atmosphere. In the mesosphere and lower thermosphere the wave fluctuations are sufficiently large to often mask the prevailing or mean state of the atmosphere. This review summarizes current knowledge about the motion, temperature and density fields associated with both large and small scale waves and stresses improved understanding that has come from recent ground based, rocket and satellite investigations.  相似文献

Astronomical infrared spectra are used to confirm the existence of complex organic molecules produced by ultraviolet photoprocessing of interstellar grain mantles. This material is shown to be the major component of the interstellar grains between the sun and the galactic center and, by inference, constitutes more than 10 million solar masses — or close to one part in a thousand of the entire mass of the milky way galaxy. It may be demonstrated that the primitive chemistry of the earth's surface was dominated by these extraterrestrial molecules after aggregated into comets if the rate of comet impacts with the earth was comparable with that required to account for the extinction of species over the past 300 million years.

Ultraviolet irradiation of bacterial spores has been studied for the first time under simulated interstellar conditions. The inactivation time predicted for the less dense regions of space is at most several hundred years. Within molecukar clouds it is shown on theoretical and experimental grounds that this t the estimated cloud. However survival of spores during their initial exposure to the solar ultraviolet presents a problem for panspermia because it requires that in the process of ejection from the earth's surface they must be enclosed within a cocoon (or mantle) of ultraviolet absorbing material of 0.6 μm thickness. Thus, although panspermia can not be rejected on the basis of lack of interstellar survival there may remain insurmountable obstacles to its occuring because of the very special protective shield requirements during ejection from its planetary source.  相似文献

Detailed in situ studies of magnetic reconnection and particle acceleration, which play a crucial role in the release and redistribution of energy in solar flares, can be performed in tokamak plasmas under conditions resembling those of the flaring solar corona. Recent measurements and modelling of fast particle production during reconnection events in the Mega-Amp Spherical Tokamak (MAST) are described. Specifically, observations in this device of electron acceleration during edge localised modes, and of both ion and electron acceleration during merging-compression plasma start-up, are presented, and possible implications of these studies for particle acceleration in flares are discussed. The results from MAST lend weight to the conjecture that large numbers of ions are accelerated to sub-MeV energies in flares.  相似文献

The principle of establishing and maintaining a gravitropic set point angle depends on gravisensing and a subsequent cascade of events that result in differential elongation of the responsive structures. Since gravity acts upon masses, the gravisensing mechanisms of all biological systems must follow the same principle, namely the sensing of some force due to differential acceleration of the perceiving entity and a reference structure. This presentation will demonstrate that gravisensing can be accomplished by various means, ranging from cytoskeletal organization, mechano-elastic stress to perturbation of electric signals. However, several arguments indicate that sedimentation of either dense plastids (statoliths), the entire protoplast, or a combination of these represents the primary step in graviperception in plants. In fungi, nuclei and cytoskeletal proteins are believed to form a network capable of gravisensing but sedimenting organelles that may function as statoliths have been identified. Theoretical and practical limitations of gravisensing and detection of acceleration forces necessitate microgravity experiments to identify the primary perceptor, subsequent biochemical mechano-transduction, and biological response processes.  相似文献

Balloon location techniques have developed along the same lines as ship and aircraft navigation systems. Early NCAR balloon flights were located by sun angle measurements versus time and magnetic field measurement, much the same way that Captain Cook used to navigate his sailing vessel. Others have used radio systems developed for ship and aircraft location such as Omega, Loran, radio direction finding, Variable Omnidirectional Radio (VOR) and radar transponders.  相似文献
