We present high and low dispersion UV spectra of HDE 245770, which is the optical counterpart of the recurrent transient X-ray pulsar A 0535+26,during a decay of an X-ray flare. UBV photometric measurements and medium dispersion optical spectra were simultaneously obtained. The energy distribution of the star in the 12 – 10 micron range is compared with the models of Kurucz and Poeckert and Marlborough. In this phase, HDE 245770 does not show evaluable variations with respect to the quiescent X-ray phase.  相似文献

Photoelectric WBVR observations of Be star HDE 245770=V 725 Tau, the optical counterpart of the transient X-ray pulsar A0535+26, having a pulse period of about 104 s, were conducted for more than 10 years. An irregular long-term optical variability of the star with amplitudes of the order of a few tenths of magnitude was found to be a usual phenomenon. In some cases rapid changes of the star's optical luminosity with a characteristic period of a few tens of minutes or a few hours, and an amplitude of several hundredths of magnitude in all the spectral bands used, which have practically coincided or correlated with the X-ray pulsar outbursts detected by X-ray satellites, were observed.Photoelectric recording of the optical flux from HDE 245770 were made in 1981–1982 with a time resolution of 1 second and 10 s, respectively, in theR spectral band (0 7000 Å) and in the narrowH -emission-line band (1/2 75 Å) using a 48-cm reflector of High-Mountain Tien-Shan observatory of the Sternberg Astronomical Institute near Alma-Ata. An analysis of autocorrelation functions of the flux changes from object under study and a comparison with the star BD+26° 876 indicated the variability of luminosity of V 725 Tau in theR spectral band on a time scale of a few tens of second; this variability resembles shot noise with a characteristic time of stochastic bursts of about 15–20 s and their amplitudes of about a few tenths of a percent. InH -emission-line radiation autocorrelation functions and power spectra show quasiperiodic variability of luminosity of HDE 245770 with a characteristic period of about 100–150 s and an amplitude in the neighbour-hood of 0.5%. The latter result is not quite reliable because of not quite fine weather conditions during the observations; independent observations and check-up are required.  相似文献

We report Ariel V(SSI) observations of three X-ray pulsars A0535+26, 2S1145-619 and GX301-2 (2S1223-624). These sources exhibit X-ray outbursts which appear, on the basis of observations extending over 5 years, to have recurrence periods of 110 days, 187.5 days and 41.4 days respectively. If these periods are orbital in origin, the observed X-ray modulation may be explained in terms of an appreciable orbital eccentricity giving rise to time variable accretion. (In the case of GX301-2 published pulse timing data already provide independent evidence for a 41.4 day orbital period and an eccentricity e 0.4). The optical counterparts are all early-type stars; A0535+26 and 2S1145-619 are identified with Be main sequence stars and GX301-2 with a B2 supergiant which also shows an emission line spectrum. The implications of the observations in relation to possible mass transfer mechanisms in such systems are discussed.  相似文献

The Be stars
Classical Be stars are defined and their relationship to normal B-type stars stated. Spectral classification of the underlying stars suggests that, on the average, Be stars are located 0.5–1.0 magnitude above the main sequence. Struve's rotational model for Be stars, and several tests which support the model, are reviewed. The best evidence at this time suggests that Be stars may not rotate with the critical velocity at which centrifugal force just balances the equatorial gravitational force, but a number of mechanisms for getting material out into the shell have been proposed and are discussed. The physical characteristics of Be shells were first derived from optical observations of shell stars, supplemented more recently by ultraviolet, infrared, radio, and polarization measurements. These data suggest that Be shells are probably lenticular with radii 3 to 20 times the radius of the underlying star, excitation temperatures lower than those of the reversing layers, and electron densities in the range 1010-1013 cm-3.Variability of Be stars, from spectroscopic, photometric, and polarimetric observations, seems well established over time scales of years and months, but the evidence for night-to-night and hourly changes is somewhat conflicting. Of special interest are recent X-ray observations of several Be stars.Models for the envelopes of Be stars are reviewed, including state-state stellar wind models, time-dependent stellar wind models, the elliptical ring model, disk models, and binary models. Finally, the evolutionary status of Be stars is discussed, and some recommendations for future work made.  相似文献

Recent discoveries of planets orbiting several nearby solar-mass stars have focussed renewed attention on the frequency and evolution of planetary systems and their evolutionary precursors around both solar and intermediate (2 M/M 8) mass stars. As a result of a wealth of new observations at all wavelengths of the circumstellar material around the nearest of the young intermediate-mass stars, the so-called Herbig Ae/Be (HAeBe) stars, we are beginning to see how these systems are similar to the solar mass objects, and how they differ. A review of the recent literature is presented, including the evolutionary status of the stars, binary frequency and the star forming environment, the morphology of the circumstellar material, including the first direct detections of disks in Keplerian rotation around these objects, and mass loss and infall phenomena. Prospects for advances in this research area as a result of advances in instrumentation are reviewed.  相似文献

Observational evidence suggests that most — if not all — binary X-ray sources are neutron stars. The evolutionary status and possible formation mechanisms of the type I (massive) and type II (low-mass) X-ray binaries are discussed. The difference between the standard massive X-ray binaries and the Be/X-ray binaries is ascribed to a somewhat different evolutionary history and status, and possible reasons for the existence of short- and long — period X-ray pulsars are discussed. Type II X-ray sources in globular clusters were most probably formed by capture processes; their formation rate inferred from the observations indicates that only a small fraction ( 1 to 10 percent) of the originally formed neutron stars have remained in their clusters. Type II sources in the galactic bulge may also have formed from cataclysmic binaries in which a white dwarf was driven over the Chandrasekhar limit by accretion.  相似文献

Medium resolution (2A/px) but high s/n spectra of approximately twenty of the brightest blue stars in the young open cluster NGC 330 in the SMC have been analyzed in order to determine their atmospheric parameters and the evolutionary status. Stellar parameters are determined by comparison with LTE and NLTE model atmosphere calculations and an HR diagram constructed. Luminosities of the sample stars lie in the range 4.0L */L )<5.0 and spectral types between O9 and late-B. The stars in our sample appear to define 4 groups: main-sequence B-stars (B2-B4), B-supergiants (B4) in a blue-loop phase of evolution, a small number of blue stragglers (O9-B0 near main-sequence stars) and a group of luminous giants (B1-B2) which reside in the so-called post main-sequence gap of the HR diagram. Furthermore, we have confirmed spectroscopically the very high incidence of Be stars in this cluster. Finally the almost complete absence of metal lines (at this resolution) is in keeping with the expected very low metallicity of the SMC.  相似文献

In the present work we intend to show that a stellar dynamo mechanism can produce high X-ray luminosities and also give account for modulation periods of the order thousand seconds or larger. We outline here that the model we propose does not require the presence of a very compact object in a binary system; indeed, we intend to show that faint late main sequence stars sufficiently fast rotating, can give rise by dynamo action to sufficiently high magnetic fields to give account for the strong X-ray emission of some galactic X-ray sources. We examine the possibility that also a fraction of those X-ray sources usually depicted as accreting binary systems may be interpreted as active stars supplied by the - dynamo mechanism.  相似文献

We present optical spectroscopy and photometry and IUE spectroscopy of the counterpart of the LMC recurrent X-ray transient A0538-66 during an outburst at the end of December 1980 which was consistent with the 16.6 day X-ray period (Skinner, 1980). The optical spectra show steadily increasing Balmer and HeI emission (indicative of a shell phase) superposed on a B2 IV spectrum with a substantial brightness increase of 2m and the sharp turn-on of HeII 686 at the peak. Significant radial velocity changes have been detected but they show no correlation with the 16.6 day period. IUE spectra during a subsequent outburst show very strong and broad (5000 km s–1) emission from C IV 1550 and HeII 1640. This behaviour is compared with other galactic transients and shell/Be stars.  相似文献

The boron 2500 spectral region has been observed with the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph (GHRS) of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) in a new set of metal-poor stars and analyzed by spectrum synthesis technique, adopting the most recent model atmospheres. By taking into account the Li and Be abundances available from the literature for this same set of objects, the resulting patterns of their light elements abundances cannot be easily justified with the currently known stellar structure scenarios. The finding of real differences in the B content between stars with very similar stellar characteristics suggest that also production effects, rather than depletion and/or mixing only, should be taken into account as a possible and valuable explanation.  相似文献

Most of what we know about galactic X-ray binaries comes from their time variation, particularly periodic variations corresponding to neutron star rotation, and binary motion. Longer cycles or quasi-cycles are much harder to observe because of the shortage of instrumentation suitable for long-term monitoring. Nonetheless, cycle with periods up to a few years have been seen in several galactic binaries.Cycles of 30–300 days have been confirmed for four high-mass systems, LMC X-4, Her X-1, SS433, and Cyg X-1, and are suspected in several others. These cycles are observed in both the X-ray and optical bands, and represent cyclic variations in both the inner and outer parts of the accretion disk. Some component of these systems is precessing, but we are not certain which. It could be a misaligned companion star; the outer rim of the accretion disk, driven by radiative feedback; or the neutron star.Several low-mass X-ray binaries have quasi-periodic cycles, with periods ranging from 1/2 to 2 years. The amplitude of modulation ranges between 50 and 100%, i.e., both persistent and transient objects fall into this class. This activity is reminiscent of the superoutburst cycles of the SU UMa cataclysmic variables, and may be caused by similar mass-transfer instabilities.Periodic outbursts in the Be/neutron star systems seem to result from variable mass transfer in a wide, eccentric orbit. The relationship between the orbital cycle and the flux outbursts, however, is not well understood, and even the equivalence of the outburst and binary cycles remains hypothetical for most objects. Most likely, the periodic outbursts result from enhanced mass transfer at periastron.Compared to other aspects of X-ray astronomy, long-term activity has been much less intensively studied by both observers and theoreticians. A simple all-sky monitor in permanent operation could provide for the X-ray sky the same kind of data base provided to optical observers by the Harvard plates.  相似文献

Conclusions Our results show that n = 3/2 and n = 1/2 polytropes are dynamically unstable to non-axisymmetric perturbations if t 0.30, in rough agreement with linear theory. Instead of fission as the direct end product of dynamic instability in rapidly rotating, centrally condensed stars, it appears that a rapidly rotating star can, through gravitational torques, eject some high angular momentum material in its equatorial plane and settle down into a dynamically stable (lower t) configuration. The central object, at least in the detailed evolution described above, ends up as a stable traixial star! The assumption of reflection symmetry through the rotation axis needs to be relaxed before this evolutionary picture can be considered realistic and before meaningful comparisons can be made with the results of Lucy (1977) and Gingold and Monaghan (1978, 1979), who found odd modes to be of crucial importance. We cannot escape mentioning that the ejected disk/ring of material in our models may have some connection with the formation of planetary systems. This research was supported by National Science Foundation Grant No. AST-7821449.  相似文献

Application of digital cross-correlation spectroscopy to the spectra of the W Serpentis binaries SX Cas and RX Cas has allowed an accurate determination of the orbits and rotations of the (mass-losing) K-subgiant secondary components. The distortion of the primary radial-velocity curves due to the influence of the prominent accretion disks in these systems has been modelled to first order. This enables us to estimate k 1, and thereby the mass ratio q 0.30, to within ± 20%. The absolute radii of the secondaries are derived independently from the observed rotations and periods, assuming synchronous rotation. They show that the stars fill their Roche lobes, or at least very nearly so. Rough fits to the available photometry shows both primaries to be unevolved mid-B stars; that in RX Cas appears completely obscured by the disk. Preliminary spectroscopic data for W Ser and W Cru show some promise for similar analyses of these systems.  相似文献

A highly variable point X-ray source, first seen by the Einstein IPC, has been positioned with the EXOSAT CMA and identified with a bright (V = 8.5) K0 star. Although in the direction of the southern half of the Cygnus Loop, this star is almost certainly a foreground object and typical of other active cool stars that are related to RS CVn systems. An EXOSAT program to study T Tauri stars failed to detect T Tau itself. However, a strong X-ray source was observed 15 from T Tau, which in its turn had not been seen by Einstein. This new source has been identified with a hitherto unstudied 13 mag star which is likely to be a dMe flare star. The young star cluster NGC 2264 was observed with the EXOSAT CMA in an attempt to identify the sources found during an Einstein IPC study of S Mon. Apart from S Mon itself, only UV-bright objects were seen, but several of these are considered likely counterparts of the Einstein sources.  相似文献

I Present the results of ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope photometry and spectroscopy of the stars in the central region (roughly 7×7 arcmin) of 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using photometric data for over 2400 stars (complete toV18 mag), and spectroscopic observations of over 150 stars in the region, the best estimate of the initial mass function (IMF) yields a slope of =–1.5±0.2 for masses > 12M, where the Salpeter slope is =–1.35. I compare these results to other measurements of the IMF for OB associations in the Magellanic Clouds.  相似文献

Stellar flares
Radio and X-ray observations of stellar flares provide the most direct probes of energy relaase particle acceleration, and energy transport on stars other than the Sun. In this review, the observational basis for our understanding of the flare phenomenon on other stars is briefly described and outstanding interpretive and theoretical issues are discussed. I shall confine my attention to objects which are solar-like, to the extent that they possess deep convective envelopes and display activity which is presumed to be magnetic in origin. These include pre-main sequence objects, classical flare stars, and close binaries. Future directions are briefly discussed.  相似文献

During a search for X-ray emission from Supernova 1979c, the parent galaxy M100 (NGC 4321) was repeatedly observed with the IPC and HRI instruments aboard the Einstein X-ray Observatory. The X-ray data reveal two possible sources in the arms of the spiral galaxy, two components in the nuclear bulge and extended X-ray emission from the central part of the galaxy (160x160 square arc seconds centered on the nucleus). We find that the estended X-ray emission cannot be explained in terms of inverse Compton effect on radio, optical or 3 K blackbody photons but rather it is likely to originate from supernova remnants (M100 is indeed a prolific supernova producer) and/or early type stars. As for M100 as a whole, the ratio of X-ray to optical liminosity places it half way between normal galaxies e.g. M31 or M33 and peculiar or active galaxies.  相似文献

The spin periods of accreting neutron stars in binary systems with Be star primaries are shown to depend more strongly on periastron distance than apastron distance. This is interpreted as showing that neutron stars spin-up on shorter timescales than they spin-down. The pulse and orbital periods of V 0332+53 suggest that the optical counterpart of this source is a Be star.  相似文献

Stellar coronae were among the first predicted X-ray sources. Because of their relatively low X-ray luminosities, however, they have been discovered only during the last few years. In the present paper the current state of stellar coronal X- and UV observations has been reviewed, including some preliminary observational results from the HEAO-1 and IUE satellites, but still without any result from the recently launched X-ray satellite HEAO-2.Late 1978 about two dozens of stellar soft X-ray sources have been detected, e.g., normal stars like the Sun (e.g., Cen), very active stars (RS CVn systems), and possibly a corona around an intermediately hot white dwarf (Sirius B).The observational results of various objects have been discussed and compared with X-ray luminosity predictions based on minimum-flux coronal models.  相似文献

New ultraviolet (1300 A, 3400 A),HST FOC observations have been used to derive the UV color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of R136, with the main scientific goal of studying the upper end of the stellar mass function at ultraviolet wavelengths where the color degeneracy encountered in visual CMDs is less severe. The CMD has been compared to a set of theoretical isochrones, which have been computed using the latest generation of evolutionary models and model atmospheres for early type stars. Wolf-Rayet stars are included. Comparison of theTheoretical andobserved CMD suggests that there are no stars brighter than M130–11. We use the observed main sequence turn-off and the known spectroscopic properties of the stellar population to derive constraints on the most probable age of R136. The presence of WNL stars and the lack of red supergiants suggests a most likely age of 3±1 Myr. A theoretical isochrone of 3±1 Myr is consistent with the observed stellar content of R136 if the most massive stars have initial masses around 50 M.Bases on Observations with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, obtained at the STScI, which is operated by AURA, Inc., under NASA contract NAS5-26555.Astrophysics Division, Space Science Department, ESA  相似文献
