Plasmaspheric density structures have been studied since the discovery of the plasmasphere in the late 1950s. But the advent of the Cluster and Image missions in 2000 has added substantially to our knowledge of density structures, thanks to the new capabilities of those missions: global imaging with Image and four-point in situ measurements with Cluster. The study of plasma sources and losses has given new results on refilling rates and erosion processes. Two-dimensional density images of the plasmasphere have been obtained. The spatial gradient of plasmaspheric density has been computed. The ratios between H+, He+ and O+ have been deduced from different ion measurements. Plasmaspheric plumes have been studied in detail with new tools, which provide information on their morphology, dynamics and occurrence. Density structures at smaller scales have been revealed with those missions, structures that could not be clearly distinguished before the global images from Image and the four-point measurements by Cluster became available. New terms have been given to these structures, like “shoulders”, “channels”, “fingers” and “crenulations”. This paper reviews the most relevant new results about the plasmaspheric plasma obtained since the start of the Cluster and Image missions.  相似文献

Ground-based instruments and a number of space missions have contributed to our knowledge of the plasmasphere since its discovery half a century ago, but it is fair to say that many questions have remained unanswered. Recently, NASA’s Image and ESA’s Cluster probes have introduced new observational concepts, thereby providing a non-local view of the plasmasphere. Image carried an extreme ultraviolet imager producing global pictures of the plasmasphere. Its instrumentation also included a radio sounder for remotely sensing the spacecraft environment. The Cluster mission provides observations at four nearby points as the four-spacecraft configuration crosses the outer plasmasphere on every perigee pass, thereby giving an idea of field and plasma gradients and of electric current density. This paper starts with a historical overview of classical single-spacecraft data interpretation, discusses the non-local nature of the Image and Cluster measurements, and emphasizes the importance of the new data interpretation tools that have been developed to extract non-local information from these observations. The paper reviews these innovative techniques and highlights some of them to give an idea of the flavor of these methods. In doing so, it is shown how the non-local perspective opens new avenues for plasmaspheric research.  相似文献

The correlation between diffuse galactic gamma rays and gas tracers is studied using the final COS-B database and H i and CO surveys covering the entire galactic plane. A good quantitative fit to the gamma rays is obtained, with a small galacto-centric gradient in the gamma-ray emissivity per hydrogen atom. The average ratio of H2 column density to integrated CO temperature is determined, the best estimate being (2.3 ± 0.3) × 102 molecules cm–2 (K km s–1)–1. Strictly taken, this value is an upper limit. The corresponding mass of molecular hydrogen in the inner galaxy, derived using both 1st and 4th quadrants, is 1.0 × 109 M .The softer gamma-ray spectrum towards the inner galaxy found in previous work can be attributed to a steeper emissivity gradient at low energies and/or to a softer gamma-ray spectrum of the emission distributed like molecular gas. A steeper emissivity gradient at low energies could be related to cosmic-ray spectral variations in the Galaxy, to different distributions of cosmic-ray electrons and nuclei, or to a contribution from discrete sources. A softer spectrum for the emission associated with molecular clouds may be physically related to the clouds themselves (i.e., cosmic-ray spectral variations) or to an associated discrete source distribution.New results on the temporal and spectral characteristics of the high-energy (50 MeV to 5 GeV) gammaray emission from the Vela pulsar are presented. The whole pulsed flux is found to exhibit long-term variability. Five discrete emission regions within the pulsar lightcurve have been identified, with the spectral characteristics and long-term behaviour being different. These characteristics differ significantly from those reported earlier for the Crab pulsar. However, geometrical pulsar models have been proposed (e.g., Morini, 1983; Smith, 1986) which could explain many of these features.  相似文献

This paper highlights significant advances in plasmaspheric wave research with Cluster and Image observations. This leap forward was made possible thanks to the new observational capabilities of these space missions. On one hand, the multipoint view of the four Cluster satellites, a unique capability, has enabled the estimation of wave characteristics impossible to derive from single spacecraft measurements. On the other hand, the Image experiments have enabled to relate large-scale plasmaspheric density structures with wave observations and provide radio soundings of the plasmasphere with unprecedented details. After a brief introduction on Cluster and Image wave instrumentation, a series of sections, each dedicated to a specific type of plasmaspheric wave, put into context the recent advances obtained by these two revolutionary missions.  相似文献

A number of previously unclassified multiplets of Fexiv, xiii, xii, and xi produced by transitions of the type 3s 23p n -3s3p n+1 are identified in the XUV spectrum of the Sun. The iron lines account for most of the previously unidentified strong lines between 330 and 370 Å. Solar observations of especial value for the investigation of the 300–400 Å region were the slitless spectroheliograms of September 22, 1968 (Purcell and Tousey, 1969) and November 4, 1969 (Tousey, 1971) — on which the image of a flare was recorded. Other solar identifications in the same spectral region include the resonance lines of Nixvii and Nixviii, and one 3p-3d multiplet of Fexiii. The solar blend at 417 Å involving the Fexv inter-combination line and Sxiv is resolved.  相似文献

Empirical models for the plasma densities in the inner magnetosphere, including plasmasphere and polar magnetosphere, have been in the past derived from in situ measurements. Such empirical models, however, are still in their initial phase compared to magnetospheric magnetic field models. Recent studies using data from CRRES, Polar, and Image have significantly improved empirical models for inner-magnetospheric plasma and mass densities. Comprehensive electric field models in the magnetosphere have been developed using radar and in situ observations at low altitude orbits. To use these models at high altitudes one needs to rely strongly on the assumption of equipotential magnetic field lines. Direct measurements of the electric field by the Cluster mission have been used to derive an equatorial electric field model in which reliance on the equipotential assumption is less. In this paper we review the recent progress in developing empirical models of plasma densities and electric fields in the inner magnetosphere with emphasis on the achievements from the Image and Cluster missions. Recent results from other satellites are also discussed when they are relevant.  相似文献

ESA??s hard X-ray and soft gamma-ray observatory INTEGRAL is covering the 3 keV to 10 MeV energy band, with excellent sensitivity during long and uninterrupted observations of a large field of view (??100 square degrees), with ms time resolution and keV energy resolution. It links the energy band of pointed soft X-ray missions such as XMM-Newton with that of high-energy gamma-ray space missions such as Fermi and ground based TeV observatories. Key results obtained so far include the first sky map in the light of the 511 keV annihilation emission, the discovery of a new class of high mass X-ray binaries and detection of polarization in cosmic high energy radiation. For the foreseeable future, INTEGRAL will remain the only observatory allowing the study of nucleosynthesis in our Galaxy, including the long overdue next nearby supernova, through high-resolution gamma-ray line spectroscopy. Science results to date and expected for the coming mission years span a wide range of high-energy astrophysics, including studies of the distribution of positrons in the Galaxy; reflection of gamma-rays off clouds in the interstellar medium near the Galactic Centre; studies of black holes and neutron stars particularly in high- mass systems; gamma-ray polarization measurements for X-ray binaries and gamma-ray bursts, and sensitive detection capabilities for obscured active galaxies with more than 1000 expected to be found until 2014. This paper summarizes scientific highlights obtained since INTEGRAL??s launch in 2002, and outlines prospects for the INTEGRAL mission.  相似文献

The electric field and magnetic field are basic quantities in the plasmasphere measured since the 1960s. In this review, we first recall conventional wisdom and remaining problems from ground-based whistler measurements. Then we show scientific results from Cluster and Image, which are specifically made possible by newly introduced features on these spacecraft, as follows. 1. In situ electric field measurements using artificial electron beams are successfully used to identify electric fields originating from various sources. 2. Global electric fields are derived from sequences of plasmaspheric images, revealing how the inner magnetospheric electric field responds to the southward interplanetary magnetic fields and storms/substorms. 3. Understanding of sub-auroral polarization stream (SAPS) or sub-auroral ion drifts (SAID) are advanced through analysis of a combination of magnetospheric and ionospheric measurements from Cluster, Image, and DMSP. 4. Data from multiple spacecraft have been used to estimate magnetic gradients for the first time.  相似文献

We describe recent progress in physics-based models of the plasmasphere using the fluid and the kinetic approaches. Global modeling of the dynamics and influence of the plasmasphere is presented. Results from global plasmasphere simulations are used to understand and quantify (i) the electric potential pattern and evolution during geomagnetic storms, and (ii) the influence of the plasmasphere on the excitation of electromagnetic ion cyclotron (EMIC) waves and precipitation of energetic ions in the inner magnetosphere. The interactions of the plasmasphere with the ionosphere and the other regions of the magnetosphere are pointed out. We show the results of simulations for the formation of the plasmapause and discuss the influence of plasmaspheric wind and of ultra low frequency (ULF) waves for transport of plasmaspheric material. Theoretical models used to describe the electric field and plasma distribution in the plasmasphere are presented. Model predictions are compared to recent Cluster and Image observations, but also to results of earlier models and satellite observations.  相似文献

X-ray Reflection
Material irradiated by X-rays produces backscattered radiation which is commonly known as the Reflection Spectrum. It consists of a structured continuum, due at high energies to the competition between photoelectric absorption and electron scattering enhanced at low energies by emission from the material itself, together with a complex line spectrum. We briefly review the history of X-ray reflection in astronomy and discuss various methods for computing the reflection spectrum from cold and ionized gas, illustrated with results from our own work reflionx. We discuss how the reflection spectrum can be used to obtain the geometry of the accretion flow, particularly the inner regions around black holes and neutron stars.  相似文献

We review X-ray plasma diagnostics based on the line ratios of He-like ions. Triplet/singlet line intensities can be used to determine electronic temperature and density, and were first developed for the study of the solar corona. Since the launches of the X-ray satellites Chandra and XMM-Newton, these diagnostics have been extended and used (from C?v to Si?xiii) for a wide variety of astrophysical plasmas such as stellar coronae, supernova remnants, solar system objects, active galactic nuclei, and X-ray binaries. Moreover, the intensities of He-like ions can be used to determine the ionization process(es) at work, as well as the distance between the X-ray plasma and the UV emission source for example in hot stars. In the near future thanks to the next generation of X-ray satellites (e.g., Astro-H and IXO), higher-Z He-like lines (e.g., iron) will be resolved, allowing plasmas with higher temperatures and densities to be probed. Moreover, the so-called satellite lines that are formed closed to parent He-like lines, will provide additional valuable diagnostics to determine electronic temperature, ionic fraction, departure from ionization equilibrium and/or from Maxwellian electron distribution.  相似文献

Over the last two decades the uninterrupted, high resolution observations of the Sun, from the excellent range of telescopes aboard many spacecraft complemented with observations from sophisticated ground-based telescopes have opened up a new world producing significantly more complete information on the physical conditions of the solar atmosphere than before. The interface between the lower solar atmosphere where energy is generated by subsurface convection and the corona comprises the chromosphere, which is dominated by jet-like, dynamic structures, called mottles when found in quiet regions, fibrils when found in active regions and spicules when observed at the solar limb. Recently, space observations with Hinode have led to the suggestion that there should exist two different types of spicules called Type?I and Type?II which have different properties. Ground-based observations in the Ca?ii H and K filtergrams reveal the existence of long, thin emission features called straws in observations close to the limb, and a class of short-lived events called rapid blue-shifted excursions characterized by large Doppler shifts that appear only in the blue wing of the Ca?ii infrared line. It has been suggested that the key to understanding how the solar plasma is accelerated and heated may well be found in the studies of these jet-like, dynamic events. However, while these structures are observed and studied for more than 130 years in the visible, but also in the UV and EUV emission lines and continua, there are still many questions to be answered. Thus, despite their importance and a multitude of observations performed and theoretical models proposed, questions regarding their origin, how they are formed, their physical parameters, their association with the underlying photospheric magnetic field, how they appear in the different spectral lines, and the interrelationship between structures observed in quiet and active regions on the disk and at the limb, as well as their role in global processes has not yet received definitive answers. In addition, how they affect the coronal heating and solar wind need to be further explored. In this review we present observations and physical properties of small-scale jet-like chromospheric events observed in active and quiet regions, on the disk and at the limb and discuss their interrelationship.  相似文献

In the first part of this paper the morphological structure of Magellanic type galaxies (Irr I) is investigated. The galaxies of Magellanic type present a basic pattern consisting of a disk, a bar, stellar arms, rudimentary or well developed, spiral filaments and condensations in the disk. With the help of this pattern a well-defined classification scheme is set up. The subgroup of Irr II-systems consists of normal galaxies which are more or less tidally disturbed. Bursts of star formation have a great influence on structure and colour of irregular galaxies. Using the ESO-B Atlas, 580 galaxies of Magellanic type (out of a sample of 3187 galaxies) were classified; 57 are new SB(s)m systems (prototype Large Magellanic Cloud). The sample shows dominant bar structures at the classification stages d-, dm-, and m. A striking feature is the asymmetric position of bar and disk. This asymmetry is a general characteristic of galaxies of types SBd-SBm IB. The asymmetry can be discribed by a relative displacement parameter \(\tilde \Lambda \) = 0.78 ±0.15, defined as the quotient of small and great distance of the bar center to the optical edge of the disk. The displacement cannot be explained by tidal interaction with neighbouring galaxies. In the second part of the paper the kinematics and dynamics of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) as the nearest and best-known example of a galaxy of Magellanic type is investigated. The main structural features of the LMC are disk, bar, rudimentary and well developed stellar arms as well as spiral filaments (not necessarily connected with density waves); the γ-structure is a broken up ring structure. Embedded into these features are young, asymmetrically located spiral arm filaments. As an explanation for these structures stochastic start formation in an ordered chain reaction is proposed. The pattern of the spiral arm filaments is determined by the rotation curve. The morphological peculiarities of the LMC can also be detected in other galaxies of that type. The mean absolute displacement of the centers of bar and disk, determined from 18 galaxies, is Λ = 800 pc. The displacement between the bar center and the symmetry center of the rotation curve is of the same order. The presently known radial velocities of planetary nebulae, star clusters, Hi and Hii regions and stars belonging to the LMC have been collected in a catalogue as the basis of a discussion of the kinematics and dynamics of the LMC. Contrary to earlier work, we have used, for the first time, the radial velocities of objects of all subgroups together by a proper weighting scheme. Thus the basic kinematics and dynamics of the LMC has been deduced. The radial velocity field shows no central symmetry; it is characterized by large scale (2–3 kpc) disturbances. By comparison with the velocity field of other galaxies three main disturbances are identified: an oval distortion of the velocity field in the bar region, a radial velocity field around 30 Doradus, and disturbances connected with a warp or material above the disk in the southern quadrants. The results of a detailed numerical analysis of these three facts can be summed up as follows:
  1. The rotation curve is determined over 10° diameter; it shows differential rotation, an asymmetric behavior in the south and a double structure in its Hi component. The rotation center is displaced by 0°.7 from the bar center. The orientation of the kinematic line of nodes and the systemic velocity vary as functions of the distance from the center. Therefore, it is possible to show definitely that large scale disturbances (warping, z-structure and streaming motions) are existent.
  2. By variation of the kinematical parameters (systemic velocity, inclination, orientation of the line of nodes, rotation center) the dispersion of the measured radial velocities was minimized and the basic rotation curve determined. The rotation curves for the north and south side of the LMC are significantly different. The south side is either warped or there is material above the main plane. There seems to be a connection between this structure, the Panmagellanic Gas and the Magellanic Stream. The north side appears to be free of distorsion.
  3. The residual velocity field (observed minus model) deduced from a basic rotation curve shows that the displacement between the rotation center and the bar center is not caused by local streaming motions. The rotation center must be the mass center. The bar shows a radial velocity field; in the 30 Doradus region inward and outward motions are found.
The mean velocity dispersion of population I objects is 10.5 km s-1 of population II objects 16.0 km s-1. Red and blue globular clusters show different kinematical behavior. By comparison of eight mass models, taking into consideration thickness effects and controlled by surface photometric data, the mass of the LMC is found to be (0.5 ± 0.1) × 1010 \(\mathfrak{M}_ \odot \) (assuming the inclination 33°, the systemic velocity 46.9 km s-1, and the distance 56 kpc). Dynamically, the LMC can be described by a dominating disk potential with an additional bar potential as a disturbance. The mass of the bar is 0.6 × 109 \(\mathfrak{M}_ \odot \) . The stable neutral point of such a configuration can be found in the residual velocity field. The absorption feature crossing the bar coincides with the maximum velocity gradient of the computed radial velocity field in the plane of the system.  相似文献

Observations of cosmic rays and their related radio to gamma-ray signatures are surveyed and discussed critically, and compared to theoretical models of the cosmic-ray origin and propagation. The analogous heliospheric processes are included as a well-studied case of the principal physical processes of energetic particle acceleration and propagation. Reinforcements, or conflicts, in the interpretations of cosmic-ray spectral and compositional characteristics arise when cosmic-ray source and propagation models are confronted with astronomical information about the Galaxy as a whole and from potential source sites, i.e., supernova remnants or regions with high massive-star density. This volume represents the outcome of two workshops held at ISSI. In this chapter we summarize the introductory papers presented below, and include insights from the workshop discussions.  相似文献

The interaction of cosmic rays with interstellar clouds may produce some of the observed gamma-ray sources. The use of molecular observations to estimate the cloud masses, which are used to derive cosmic-ray fluxes, is reviewed. Molecular diagnostics of high cosmic-ray ionization rates are discussed, and a detailed application of those diagnostics is summarised and presented as evidence that second-order Fermi acceleration is important in old supernova remnants and can produce cosmic rays of too low energy to induce gamma-ray emission.Proceedings of the XVIII General Assembly of the IAU: Galactic Astrophysics and Gamma-Ray Astronomy, held at Patras, Greece, 19 August 1982.Royal Society Jaffé Donation Fellow.  相似文献

The analysis of compact astronomical objects has generally dealt with the physical properties of the source within a two-parameter space, which is defined by the spectral characteristics and time variability. This approach often leads to the situation whereby two or more very different models can explain the observations successfully. Polarimetric observations have the diagnostic potential to discriminate between the different compact source models and can offer a unique insight into the geometrical nature of the emission zones. To date, however, no polarization observation in the gamma-ray energy domain has been successfully performed, due to the difficulties in making polarimetric measurements in this high-energy region of the spectrum. In this paper the polarized gamma-ray emission mechanisms are reviewed with the emphasis on their detectable characteristics. Potential astronomical sites in which these emission mechanisms may be at work are discussed. Observational results obtained in other wavebands and theoretical predications made for some of the most likely astronomical sources of polarization are reviewed. Compton polarimetry has long been used in the field of nuclear gamma-ray spectroscopy in the laboratory. The operational principle behind all generations of nuclear gamma-ray polarimeters has been to measure the asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of the scattered photons. However none of the polarimeters designed for laboratory experiments will be sensitive enough to observe even the strongest astronomical source. In the past few years there have been a number of innovative developments aimed at the construction of astronomical gamma-ray polarimeters, either as dedicated experiments or in missions with polarimetric capability. The designs of all the polarimeters are based on either discrete or continuous position sensitive detector planes. In this paper the data analysis techniques associated with this type of polarimeter are discussed as well as methods of removing some of the systematic effects introduced by a non-ideal detector response function and observation conditions. Laboratory tests of these new polarimetric techniques are reviewed. They demonstrate the feasibility of building a suitably sensitive astronomical gamma-ray polarimeter. Optimization of the design of pixellated detector array based polarimeters is also addressed. The INTEGRAL mission, which is to be launched by ESA in the year 2001, is the most likely telescope to perform the first successful gamma-ray polarization observation. The polarimetric characteristics of the two main instruments on board INTEGRAL are evaluated and their sensitivities to a wide range of potentially polarized gamma-ray sources are estimated.  相似文献

Some of the most important questions about the diffuse gamma-ray continuum emission from the Galaxy are reviewed, based on Compton Observatory (CGRO) results, especially COMPTEL and EGRET, and also earlier COS-B analyses. The key issues include the rôle of emission from cosmic-ray interactions with molecular hydrogen and its energy dependence, emissivity gradients and their interpretation, the cosmic-ray electron spectrum and the effect of discrete sources. The relative contribution of the various emission processes at low and high latitudes is estimated and a plausible synthesis of the observed spectrum over 5 decades of energy is presented. In the energy range above 30 MeV, models based either on explicit cosmic-ray gradients or cosmic-ray/gas coupling can give acceptable fits to the data, and a clear distinction has yet to be made. The quality of the EGRET data may make this possible in the future. The value of the CO-to-H2 conversion factor from -rays is still uncertain and there is considerable evidence for cloud-to-cloud variations. The existence of a small emissivity gradient is well established, but is difficult to explain in a diffusive cosmic-ray propagation picture with sources distributed like SNR or pulsars unless there is a larger halo than suggested by cosmic-ray composition studies. In the energy range 1–30 MeV covered by COMPTEL the spectrum of the diffuse emission has been measured and is consistent with a combination of bremsstrahlung and inverse-Compton emission; spatial analysis shows strong evidence for a component with a wide latitude extent which is plausibly identified with the inverse-Compton component. The molecular hydrogen appears to be only a weak -ray emitter at low energies, which can be interpreted in terms of reduced MeV cosmic-ray electron density in molecular clouds. New data on the hard X-ray diffuse galactic emission is becoming available and indicates the need for a low-energy upturn in the electron spectrum or some other additional component. The contribution of unresolved sources to the diffuse emission is unknown but-probably lies in the range 10–20%. At high latitudes the galactic emission is intense enough to significantly complicate the identification of the extragalactic component; in particular the inverse-Compton emission from a halo a few kpc in extent can account for much of the high-latitude galactic emission. The detection of the Large Magellanic Cloud and the non-detection of the Small Magellanic Cloud provide constraints on extragalactic cosmic-rays, and provide an interesting comparison with the properties of the galactic system. On account of the large amount of data from CGRO now available, this is a subject in rapid development, and this paper provides a snapshot of the situation around mid-1995.  相似文献

A brief analysis is made of the interrelation of the intensity of cosmic-ray particles, the column density of gas and the intensity of cosmic γ-rays. It is shown that, locally, γ-ray data enable the calibration of H2 densities to be inferred from CO data and elsewhere the variation of cosmic-ray intensity with position to be assessed. Finally, the importance of cosmic-ray irradiated molecular clouds in simulating γ-ray ‘sources’ is reiterated.  相似文献

The containment lifetime of the cosmic radiation is a crucial parameter in the investigation of the cosmic-ray origin and plays an important role in the dynamics of the Galaxy. The separation of the cosmic-ray Be isotopes achieved by two satellite experiments is considered in this paper, and from the measured isotopic ratio between the radioactive 10Be (half-life = 1.5 × 106 yr) and the stable 9Be, it is deduced that the cosmic rays propagate through matter with an average density of 0.24 ± 0.07 atoms cm-3, lower than the traditionally quoted average density in the galactic disk of 1 atom cm-3. This paper reviews the implications of this result for the cosmic-ray age mainly in the context of two models of confinement and propagation: the homogeneous model, normally identified with confinement to the galactic gaseous disk, and a diffusion model in which the cosmic rays extend into a galactic halo. The propagation calculations use:
  1. a newly deduced cosmic-ray pathlength distribution.
  2. a self-consistent model of solar modulation.
  3. an up-to-date set of fragmentation cross sections.
The satellite results and their implications are compared with the information on the cosmic-ray age derived from other cosmic-ray radioactive nuclei and the measured differential energy spectrum of high-energy electrons. It is a major conclusion of this paper that in a homogeneous model the cosmic-ray age is 15(+7, -4) million years, i.e., about a factor 4 longer than early estimates based on the abundances of the light nuclei Li, Be, and B and a nominal interstellar density of 1 atom cm -3. The lifetime is even longer when the satellite results are applied to a diffusion halo model. The deduced traversed matter density, together with other astrophysical considerations, suggest the population of a galactic halo by the cosmic rays.  相似文献
