Energetic particles associated with Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) are observed throughout the inner and middle heliosphere, showing large positive (>100%/AU) radial intensity gradients. Their appearance at 1 AU is associated with the appearance of fast, recurrent solar wind streams. At several AU, CIR energetic particles are accelerated at shocks which propagate away from the interface of fast and slow solar wind streams. CIR energy spectra at 1 AU cover the range >35 keV to several MeV/amu; the spectra steepen above ∼1 MeV/amu, and show no turnover even at the lowest energies. The ion composition of CIRs is similar to solar material, but with significant differences that might be due to properties of the seed population and/or the acceleration process. This paper summarizes properties of energetic particles in CIRs as known through the early 1990s, prior to the launch of the Ulysses, and WIND spacecraft, whose new results are presented in Kunow, Lee et al. (1999) in this volume. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

The intense solar activity centered in March and June 1991 produced some of the largest interplanetary disturbances over the past several solar cycles. For these events the Ulysses EPAC energetic particle observations near 3 AU are compared with those of the Voyager 2 CRS experiment near 35 AU. At Voyager 2 there is a single long-lived event extending over a period of some 6 months while the Ulysses data shows the imprint of individual events as well as the formative stages of the longer lived structure. The average intensity gradient is –17% AU between the 2 spacecraft. At both locations the energy spectra can be represented by an exponential in momentum. The characteristic momentum for protons, (Po)H is on the average 4–5 times larger at 35 AU than at 3 AU and there is a significant change in the (Po)He/(Po)H ratio. However the average H to He ratio is in the range 20–25 for both sets of measurements.  相似文献

A primary goal of the Ulysses mission is to study the 3-dimensional structures making up the interplanetary medium, and example of which is the high speed solar wind stream observedin situ by Ulysses beginning in July 1992. In order to study the longitudinal extent of this stream as a function of Ulysses' increasing heliographic latitude, a second point of reference is required to separate spatial and temporal variations. Such a reference point is provided at Jupiter by a class of Jovian radio bursts, whose occurrence rate varies in a predictable way with solar wind speed. Using thein situ and remote observations from Ulysses, the extent of the high speed stream at 5 AU is mapped and compared to the associated coronal hole boundary on the Sun.  相似文献

The latitudinal structure of the heliospheric magnetic field during much of the solar cycle is determined by a "sector zone", in which both positive and negative magnetic polarities are observed, and by the unipolar regions above and below the sector zone. Distinct corotating streams and interactions regions are found primarily in the sector zone during the declining phase of the solar cycle. Within a few AU, the streams and interaction regions are distinct and are related to solar features. A restructuring of the solar wind occurs between 1 AU and 15 AU, in which the isolated streams, interaction regions and shocks merge to form compound streams and merged interaction regions ("MIRs"). Memory of the source conditions is lost in this process. In the region between 30 AU and the termination shock (the "distant heliosphere"), the pressure of interstellar pickup protons dominates that of the magnetic field and solar wind particles and largely controls the dynamical processes. During 1983 and 1994, corotating streams and corotating interaction regions were observed at 1 AU. Merged interaction regions were observed at 15 AU in 1983, but not at 45 AU during 1994. This result suggests a further restructuring of the solar wind in the distant heliosphere, but variations from one solar cycle to the next might also contribute to the result. Approaching solar minimum in 1996, the latitudinal extent of the sector zone decreased, and Voyager 2 gradually entered the unipolar region below it. The speed was lower in the sector zone than below it. At Voyagers 1 and 2, the change in cosmic ray intensity is related to the magnetic field strength during each year from 1983 through 1996. The magnetic field strength has a multifractal distribution throughout the heliosphere. This fundamental symmetry of the heliosphere has not been incorporated explicitly in cosmic ray propagation models.  相似文献

Proton phase space densities in the solar wind frame from suprathermal velocities 10 km s–1 to 30,000 km s–1 (0.5 eV–5 MeV) were derived from combined SWICS and HISCALE measurements when Ulysses was at 5 AU and –24° heliolatitude. The period (19–23 January 1993) encompasses a forward/reverse shock pair (20 January, 0500 UT and 22 January, 0300 UT). Strong evidence is found for shock acceleration of pickup protons from interstellar hydrogen at all energies measured.  相似文献

The spectra and anisotropies of ions 30 keV have been measured by the Low Energy Charged Particle experiment on Voyagers 1 and 2 in the vicinity of interplanetary shocks between radial distances of 1–55 AU and heliographic latitudes 11° S-32° N. The spectra and anisotropies associated with a recent corotating (CIR) event at low latitude observed at Voyager 2 (36.6 AU, –9°) are similar to those of another event at high latitude observed at Voyager 1 (49.8 AU, 33.5°). An earlier CIR event observed at Voyager 2 (14 AU) associated with the previous solar cycle produced spectra and anisotropies remarkably similar to the more recent events. The anisotropies are used to calculate the solar wind velocity downstream of shocks where possible using the Compton-Getting effect, allowing the determination of previously unknown velocities at the locations of Voyager 1. For the large shock event observed at Voyagers 1 (38 AU, 30°) and 2 (29 AU, 3°) in mid-1989, the postshock spectra and anisotropies are well described by convected power law distributions. The Voyager 1 and 2 postshock spectra 4 days after the shock passage are nearly identical. The preshock anisotropies at low energy are similar, despite differences in the magnetic field orientation and the low energy spectrum. We find that the 30 keV ion anisotropies are generally well described by convective distributions downstream but not in the upstream region for shocks and many other shock events at Voyagers 1 and 2.  相似文献

Throughout 1993, as the Ulysses spacecraft traveled from 23° to 45° south heliolatitude, the HI-SCALE instrument on the spacecraft measured a recurrent series of enhanced particle fluxes with a recurrence period of 26.5 days. These particles are accelerated from a background seed population by the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) associated with a southern solar polar coronal hole. Using the Wart detector telescope of the HI-SCALE instrument, we have analyzed the elemental abundances of C, N, O, and Fe relative to He for 0.5–4.0 MeV/nucl ions and Ne, Mg, and Si for 1.0–4.0 MeV/nucl ions in the CIRs. We compare the relative abundances to some previous measurements reported from 1 A.U. as well as with solar photosphere abundances. We note that HI-SCALE measurements of the heliolatitude dependence of the oxygen abundance and spectrum as reported by Lanzerottiet al. (1994) suggest that a substantial fraction of the seed population for the CIR-accelerated oxygen is likely to be the anomalous oxygen component of the cosmic rays.  相似文献

Nine coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been detected in the solar wind by the Ulysses plasma experiment between 31° and 61° South. One of these events, which was also a magnetic cloud, was directly associated with an event observed by the soft X-ray telescope on Yohkoh in which large magnetic loops formed in the solar corona directly beneath Ulysses. This association suggests that the flux rope topology of the magnetic cloud resulted from reconnection between the legs of neighboring magnetic loops within the rising CME. The average CME speed (740 km s–1) at these latitudes was comparable to that of the normal solar wind there and is much greater than average CME speeds observed either in the solar wind in the ecliptic plane or in the corona close to the Sun. We suggest that the same basic acceleration process applies to both slow CMEs and the normal solar wind at any latitude.  相似文献

Interstellar dust detected by the dust sensor onboard Ulysses was first identified after the Jupiter flyby when the spacecraft's trajectory changed dramatically (Grün et al., 1994). Here we report on two years of Ulysses post-Jupiter data covering the range of ecliptic latitudes from 0° to –54° and distances from 5.4 to 3.2 AU. We find that, over this time period, the flux of interstellar dust particles with a mean mass of 3·10–13 g stays nearly constant at about 1·10–4, m–2 s–1 ( sr)–1, with both ecliptic latitude and heliocentric distance. Also presented are 20 months of measurements from the identical dust sensor onboard the Galileo spacecraft which moved along an in-ecliptic orbit from 1.0 to 4.2 AU. From the impact direction and speeds of the measured dust particles we conclude that Galileo almost certainly sensed interstellar dust outside 2.8 AU; interstellar particles may also account for part of the flux seen between 1 and 2.8 AU.  相似文献

The radial component of the magnetic field at Ulysses, over latitudes from –10° to –45° and distances from 5.3 to 3.8 AU, compares very well with corresponding measurements being made by IMP-8 in the ecliptic at 1AU. There is little, if any, evidence of a latitude gradient. Variances in the field, normalized to the square of the field magnitude, show little change with latitude in variations in the magnitude but a large increase in the transverse field variations. The latter are shown to be caused by the presence of large amplitude, long period Alfvénic fluctuations. This identification is based on the close relation between the magnetic field and velocity perturbations including the effect of anisotropy in the solar wind pressure. The waves are propagating outward from the Sun, as in the ecliptic, but variance analysis indicates that the direction of propagation is radial rather than field-aligned. A significant long-period component of 10 hours is present.  相似文献

Our picture of modulation in the inner heliosphere has been greatly affected by observations from the Ulysses mission, which since 1992 has provided the first comprehensive exploration of modulation as a function of latitude from 80° S to 80° N heliographic latitude. Among the principal findings for the inner heliosphere are: a) the cosmic ray intensity depends only weakly on heliographic latitude; b) for the nuclear components, and especially for the anomalous components, the intensity increases towards the poles, qualitatively consistent with predictions of drift models for the current sign of the solar magnetic dipole; c) no change in the level of modulation was observed across the shear layer separating fast polar from slow equatorial solar wind near 1 AU; d) 26-day recurrent variations in the intensity persist to the highest latitudes, even in the absence of clearly correlated signatures in the solar wind and magnetic field; e) the surface of symmetry of the modulation in 1994-95 was offset about 10° south of the heliographic equator; f) the intensity of electrons and of low energy (< 100 MeV) protons showed essentially no dependence on heliographic latitude.  相似文献

In the 25 months since Jupiter flyby, the Ulysses spacecraft has climbed southward to a heliolatitude of 56°. This transit has been marked by an evolution from slow, dense coronal streamer belt solar wind through two regions where the rotation of the Sun carried Ulysses back and forth between streamer belt and polar coronal hole flows, and finally into a region of essentially continuous fast, low density solar wind from the southern polar coronal hole. Throughout these large changes, the momentum flux normalized to 1 AU displays very little systematic variation. In addition, the bulk properties of the polar coronal hole solar wind are quite similar to those observed in high speed streams in the ecliptic plane at 1 AU. Coronal mass ejections and forward and reverse shocks associated with corotating interaction regions have also been observed at higher heliolatitudes, however they are seen less frequently with increasing southern heliolatitude. Ulysses has thus far collected data from 20° of nearly contiguous solar wind flows from the polar coronal hole. We examine these data for characteristic variations with heliolatitude and find that the bulk properties in general show very little systematic variation across the southern polar coronal hole so far.  相似文献

We analyze two solar type III radio bursts that were observed simultaneously by the ICE and Ulysses spacecraft. Both bursts originated behind the solar limb as viewed from either spacecraft. At the time of these events, ICE was in the ecliptic plane at 1 AU and Ulysses was 35° south of the ecliptic plane at 4 AU. For one event on 931117, the ratios of the peak flux densities measured at each spacecraft, at each observing frequency, were consistent with the most probable source locations relative to ICE and Ulysses. The second event on 931004 was a complex burst consisting of two distinct components at high frequencies. At low frequencies, the intensity of the first component decreased rapidly at each spacecraft. The second component, however, dominated the low frequency emission observed at Ulysses but not at ICE. These differences in the observed radiation must be related to the different viewing geometries of the two spacecraft. The measured onset times as a function of observing frequency were consistent with a constant exciter speed through the interplanetary medium and suggest that there are significant propagation delays, especially for the radiation propagating within the ecliptic plane.  相似文献

The most significant information about fields and plasmas in the outer solar system, based on observations by Pioneer 10 and 11 investigations, is reviewed. The characteristic evolution of solar wind streams beyond 1 AU has been observed. The region within which the velocity increases continuously near 1 AU is replaced at larger distances by a thick interaction region with abrupt jumps in the solar wind speed at the leading and trailing edges. These abrupt increases, accompanied by corresponding jumps in the field magnitude and in the solar wind density and temperature, consist typically of a forward and a reverse shock. The existence of two distinct corotating regions, separated by sharp boundaries, is a characteristic feature of the interplanetary medium in the outer solar system. Within the interaction regions, compression effects are dominant and the field strength, plasma density, plasma temperature and the level of fluctuations are enhanced. Within the intervening quiet regions, rarefaction effects dominate and the field magnitude, solar wind density and fluctuation level are very low. These changes in the structure of interplanetary space have significant consequences for the many energetic particles propagating through the medium. The interaction regions control the access to the inner solar system of relativistic electrons from Jupiter's magnetosphere. The interaction regions and shocks appear to be associated with an acceleration of solar protons to MeV energies. Flare-generated shocks are observed to be propagating through the outer solar system with constant speed, implying that the previously recognized deceleration of flare shocks takes place principally near the Sun. Radial gradients in the solar wind and interplanetary field parameters have been determined. The solar wind speed is nearly constant between 1 and 5 AU with only a slight deceleration of 30 km s+1 on the average. The proton flux follows an r +2 dependence reasonably well, however, the proton density shows a larger departure from this dependence. The proton temperature decreases steadily from 1 to 5 AU and the solar wind protons are slightly hotter than anticipated for an adiabatic expansion. The radial component of the interplanetary field falls off like r +2 and, on the average, the magnitude and spiral angle also agree reasonably well with theory. However, there is evidence, principally within quiet regions, of a significant departure of the azimuthal field component and the field magnitude from simple theoretical models. Pioneer 11 has obtained information up to heliographic latitudes of 16°. Observations of the interplanetary sector structure show that the polarity of the field becomes gradually more positive, corresponding to outward-directed fields at the Sun, and at the highest latitudes the sector structure disappears. These results confirm a prior suspicion that magnetic sectors are associated with an interplanetary current sheet surrounding the Sun which is inclined slightly to the solar equator.Proceedings of the Symposium on Solar Terrestrial Physics held in Innsbruck, May–June 1978.  相似文献

Relativistic solar proton events   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Energetic solar flare particles contain rich information concerning mechanisms of particle acceleration on the Sun and subsequent transport through turbulent interplanetary space. Even the most energetic particles, in particular protons with kinetic energy above 500 MeV, may undergo coronal and interplanetary propagation effects, disturbing their accelerated injection spectrum after release from the solar flare. Relativistic solar proton events are recorded by neutron monitors at ground level. A detailed knowledge of the response of these ground-based detectors to the impact by a beam of protons on the top of the atmosphere is required to analyze these observations. The spectral index of arriving protons can be obtained from the response of the world-wide network of neutron monitors provided their directional anisotropy is known. The spectral index may also by determined from the relative enhancements in count rates of two similar detectors at different altitudes but similar asymptotic cones of acceptances, or from the relative enhancements of two detectors with different spectral sensitivities but at the same location of high latitude. Ground level enhancements from solar flare protons have been recorded at Sanae, Antarctica, since 1971 by two neutron monitors with different sensitivities to primary protons in the rigidity range from 1 GV to 5 GV. Spectral indexes of about 20 of these more energetic solar flare proton events have been determined from the two detector enhancements recorded at Sanae. These indexes do not show any increase (softening of the relativistic proton spectra) with increasing heliolongitude away from the preferred IMF connection region as was obtained for 20–80 MeV protons. Furthermore, most of the enhanced count rates show fluctuations larger than statistical, indicative of propagation in a mostly turbulent interplanetary magnetic field.  相似文献

Data obtained by the Ulysses magnetometer and solar wind analyzer have been combined to study the properties of magnetic holes in the solar wind between 1 and 5.4 AU and to 23° south latitude. Although the plasma surrounding the holes was generally stable against the mirror instability, there are indications that the holes may have been remnants of mirror mode structures created upstream of the points of observation. Those indications include: (1) For the few holes for which proton or alpha-particle pressure could be measured inside the hole, the ion thermal pressure was always greater than in the plasma adjacent to the holes. (2) The plasma surrounding many of the holes was marginally stable for the mirror mode, while the plasma environment of all the holes was significantly closer to mirror instability than was the average solar wind. (3) The plasma containing trains of closely spaced holes was closer to mirror instability than was the plasma containing isolated holes. (4) The near-hole plasma had much higher ion (ratio of thermal to magnetic pressure) than did the average solar wind.  相似文献

Ulysses measurements of the solar wind electron heat flux as a function of heliographic latitude are presented. The latitudinal in the electron heat flux presented have been normalized by the radial gradient in the electron heat flux obtained during the in-ecliptic phase of the Ulysses mission (qe R–3.0). We find no significant variation in electron heat flux with latitude.  相似文献

The ESA/NASA spacecraft Ulysses is making, for the first time, direct measurements in the solar wind originating from virtually all places where the corona expands. Since the initial two polar passes of Ulysses occur during relatively quiet solar conditions, we discuss here the three main regimes of quasi-stationary solar wind flow: the high speed streams (HSSTs) coming out of the polar coronal holes, the slow solar wind surrounding the HSSTs, and the streamers which occur at B-field reversals. Comparisons between H- maps and data taken by Ulysses demonstrate that as a result of super-radial expansion, the HSSTs occupy a much larger solid angle than that derived from radial projections of coronal holes. Data obtained with SWICS-Ulysses confirm that the strength of the FIP effect is much reduced in the HSSTs. The systematics in the variations of elemental abundances becomes particularly clear, if these are plotted against the time of ionisation (at the solar surface) rather than against the first ionisation potential (FIP). We have used a superposed-epoch method to investigate the changes in solar wind speed and composition measured during the 9-month period in 1992/93 when Ulysses regularly passed into and out of the southern HSST. We find that the patterns in the variations of the Mg/O and O7+/O6+ ratios are virtually identical and that their transition from high to low values is very steep. Since the Mg/O ratio is controlled by the FIP effect and the O7+/O6+ ratio reflects the coronal temperature, this finding points to a connection between chromospheric and coronal conditions.  相似文献

The relative abundances of low energy ions (0.6–2.0 MeV/n) in solar energetic particle (SEP) and corotating interaction region (CIR) events have been measured by the EPAC experiment aboard Ulysses since launch in October 1990 until the present time. We give an overview of the abundances of heavy ions (He, C, Ne, Fe) relative to oxygen during energetic particle events lasting longer than 5 days during the in- and out-of-ecliptic phase of the mission. While the period Oct. 1990 to Aug. 1992 was dominated by high solar activity the Ulysses out of ecliptic passage at solar latitudes up to 45° went parallel to the declining phase of solar activity. Thus a very clear structure of corotating interaction regions was observed. While the in-ecliptic composition is in general agreement with measurements made near the Earth, the development of the CIR-composition shows two phases: From Aug. 1992 to May 1993 the C/O-ratio is 0.55–0.70, afterwards it increases to 0.8–0.9. This increase is correlated to the disappearance of the current sheet at 30° solar latitude reported by Smithet al. (1993).  相似文献

We review evidence that led to the view that acceleration at shock waves driven by coronal mass ejections (CMEs) is responsible for large particle events detected at 1 AU. It appears that even if the CME bow shock acceleration is a possible model for the origin of rather low energy ions, it faces difficulties on account of the production of ions far above 1 MeV: (i) although shock waves have been demonstrated to accelerate ions to energies of some MeV nucl–1 in the interplanetary medium, their ability to achieve relativistic energies in the solar environment is unproven; (ii) SEP events producing particle enhancements at energies 100 MeV are also accompanied by flares; those accompanied only by fast CMEs have no proton signatures above 50 MeV. We emphasize detailed studies of individual high energy particle events which provide strong evidence that time-extended particle acceleration which occurs in the corona after the impulsive flare contributes to particle fluxes in space. It appears thus that the CME bow shock scenario has been overvalued and that long lasting coronal energy release processes have to be taken into account when searching for the origin of high energy SEP events.  相似文献
