Throughout 1993, as the Ulysses spacecraft traveled from 23° to 45° south heliolatitude, the HI-SCALE instrument on the spacecraft measured a recurrent series of enhanced particle fluxes with a recurrence period of 26.5 days. These particles are accelerated from a background seed population by the corotating interaction regions (CIRs) associated with a southern solar polar coronal hole. Using the Wart detector telescope of the HI-SCALE instrument, we have analyzed the elemental abundances of C, N, O, and Fe relative to He for 0.5–4.0 MeV/nucl ions and Ne, Mg, and Si for 1.0–4.0 MeV/nucl ions in the CIRs. We compare the relative abundances to some previous measurements reported from 1 A.U. as well as with solar photosphere abundances. We note that HI-SCALE measurements of the heliolatitude dependence of the oxygen abundance and spectrum as reported by Lanzerottiet al. (1994) suggest that a substantial fraction of the seed population for the CIR-accelerated oxygen is likely to be the anomalous oxygen component of the cosmic rays.  相似文献

In November 1992, the Ulysses spacecraft observed a multiple solar particle event and a CME event at 5.2 AU and a heliographic latitude of 20° S which were superimposed to the recurrent corotating interacting region. Distinct particle flux increases caused by these events were observed in all energy channels of the EPAC experiment. The experimental findings are discussed.  相似文献

We present observations of energetic (0.34–8 MeV) ions from the Ulysses spacecraft during its second ascent to southern high latitude regions of the heliosphere. We cover the period from January 1999 until mid-2000 as Ulysses moved from 5.2 AU and 18° S to 3.5 AU and 55° S. In contrast to the long-lived and well-defined ∼26-day recurrences that were observed throughout Ulysses‘ first southern pass, energetic ion fluxes during the first portion of the Ulysses’ second polar orbit are highly irregular. Although corotating interaction regions (CIRs) are clearly present in solar wind and magnetic field data throughout the first half of 1999, their effects on energetic ion intensities are quite different from what they were in 1992–1993. No dominant strictly recurrent ion flux increases are observed in association with the arrival of these CIRs. Correspondingly, there is no stable structure of large polar coronal holes during the same period. Isolated transient solar energetic particle (SEP) events are observed at low and high latitudes. We compare energetic ion observations from the ACE and Ulysses spacecraft during the first half of 1999 to determine the influence of these SEP events in the observed recurrent CIR structure. Such SEP events occurred only occasionally during 1992–1993, but when they occurred, they obscured the recurrences in a manner similar to that observed in 1999–2000. We therefore conclude that the basic differences in the behavior of energetic ion events between the first and second southern passes are due to the short life of the corotating structure and the higher frequency of SEP events occurring in 1999–2000. A remarkable streaming beam-like particle event of 60 keV-5 MeV ions and of 38–315 keV electrons has been reported previously. This event has been associated with the passage of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) over the Ulysses spacecraft on June 9–13, 1993. At this time, the spacecraft was located at 4.6 AU from the sun and at an heliolatitude of 32° south. It was proposed (Armstrong et al., 1994) that the particle injection source could have been of coronal origin. In this study, we analyse the solar activity during this period. We identify a region of solar radio noise storms in the corona and in particular, a flare on June 7 that presents all the required characteristics to produce the hot plasma beam observed in the interplanetary medium.  相似文献

We have analysed the ions and electrons seen by the HI-SCALE instrument on the Ulysses spacecraft in the interval from 21–30 June 1993, ahead of an arrival of the CIR which has dominated the particle environment of Ulysses since July 1992. These particles show velocity dispersion effects usually associated with solar-flare particles. There was no flare activity of any consequence on the region of the Sun to which Ulysses was connected. We do however find a newly emerged active region (# 7525) close to the estimated site of connection, which we conclude could be the particle source.  相似文献

Between its launch in October 1990 and the end of 1993, approximately 160 fast collisionless shock waves were observed in the solar wind by the Ulysses space probe. During the in-ecliptic part of the mission, to February 1992, the observed shock waves were first caused mainly by solar transient events following the solar maximum and the reorganisation of the large scale coronal fields. With the decay in solar activity, relatively stable Corotating Interaction Regions (CIRs) were observed betwen 3 and 5.4 AU, each associated with at least one forwardreverse shock pair. During the out-of-ecliptic phase of the orbit, from February 1992 onwards, CIRs and shock pairs associated with them continued to dominate the observations. From July 1992, Ulysses encountered the fast solar wind flow from the newly developed southern polar coronal hole, and from May 1993 remained in the unipolar magnetic region associated with this coronal hole. At latitudes beyond 30°, CIRs were associated almost exclusively with reverse shocks only. A comprehensive list of shock waves identified in the magnetic field and solar wind plasma data from Ulysses is given in Table 1. The principal characteristics were determined mainly from the magnetic field data. General considerations concerning the determination of shock characteristics are outlined in the Introduction.  相似文献

Proton phase space densities in the solar wind frame from suprathermal velocities 10 km s–1 to 30,000 km s–1 (0.5 eV–5 MeV) were derived from combined SWICS and HISCALE measurements when Ulysses was at 5 AU and –24° heliolatitude. The period (19–23 January 1993) encompasses a forward/reverse shock pair (20 January, 0500 UT and 22 January, 0300 UT). Strong evidence is found for shock acceleration of pickup protons from interstellar hydrogen at all energies measured.  相似文献

We discuss isotopic abundance measurements of heavy (6 ≤ Z ≤ 14) solar energetic particles with energies from ∼15 to 70 MeV/nucleon, focusing on new measurements made on SAMPEX during two large solar particle events in late 1992. These measurements are corrected for charge/mass dependent acceleration effects to obtain estimates of coronal isotopic abundances and are compared with terrestrial and solar wind isotope abundances. An example of new results from the Advanced Composition Explorer is included. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

We present observations of energetic ions from the Ulysses COSPIN Low Energy Telescope in the mid and high-latitude regions of the heliosphere prior to and during the first polar pass of the Ulysses spacecraft. After the encounter with Jupiter, Ulysses started on its journey out-of-the-ecliptic. Between 13°S and 29°S the spacecraft sampled the solar wind from both the streamer belt and the polar coronal hole. Here, co-rotating magnetic structures with forward and reverse shocks and containing accelerated energetic ions were observed. At latitudes greater than 29°S, Ulysses was completely immersed in the solar wind from the polar coronal hole. Here the co-rotating magnetic structures were weaker, and in general had only reverse shocks, but were still capable of accelerating the energetic ions, albeit with reduced intensity. The most recent results show that beyond 50°S, very few if any, reverse shocks are observed. However, accelerated ions from magnetic interaction regions are still observed. We report also on an intensity enhancement at 50°S due to the passage of a high-latitude CME.  相似文献

The intense solar activity centered in March and June 1991 produced some of the largest interplanetary disturbances over the past several solar cycles. For these events the Ulysses EPAC energetic particle observations near 3 AU are compared with those of the Voyager 2 CRS experiment near 35 AU. At Voyager 2 there is a single long-lived event extending over a period of some 6 months while the Ulysses data shows the imprint of individual events as well as the formative stages of the longer lived structure. The average intensity gradient is –17% AU between the 2 spacecraft. At both locations the energy spectra can be represented by an exponential in momentum. The characteristic momentum for protons, (Po)H is on the average 4–5 times larger at 35 AU than at 3 AU and there is a significant change in the (Po)He/(Po)H ratio. However the average H to He ratio is in the range 20–25 for both sets of measurements.  相似文献

As Ulysses moved inward and southward from mid-1992 to early 1994 we noticed the occasional occurrence of inter-events, lasting about 10 days and falling between the recurrent events, observed at proton energies of 0.48–97 MeV, associated with Corotating Interaction Regions (CIR). These inter-events were present for several sequences of two or more solar rotations at intensity levels around 1% of those of the neighbouring main events. When we compared the Ulysses events with those measured on IMP-8 at 1 AU we saw that the inter-events appeared at Ulysses after the extended emission (>10 days) of large fluxes of solar protons of the same energy that lasted at least one solar rotation at 1 AU. The inter-events fell completely within the rarefaction regions (dv/dt<0) of the recurrent solar wind streams. The interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) lines in the rarefactions map back to the narrow range of longitudes at the Sun which mark the eastern edge of the source region of the high speed stream. Thus the inter-events are propagating at mid-latitudes to Ulysses along field lines free from stream-stream interactions. They are seen in the 0.39–1.28 MeV/nucleon He, which exhibit a faster decay, but almost never in the 38–53 keV electrons. We show that the inter-events are unlikely to be accelerated by reverse shocks associated with the CIRs and that they are more likely to be accelerated by sequences of solar events and transported along the IMF in the rarefactions of the solar wind streams.  相似文献

In the 25 months since Jupiter flyby, the Ulysses spacecraft has climbed southward to a heliolatitude of 56°. This transit has been marked by an evolution from slow, dense coronal streamer belt solar wind through two regions where the rotation of the Sun carried Ulysses back and forth between streamer belt and polar coronal hole flows, and finally into a region of essentially continuous fast, low density solar wind from the southern polar coronal hole. Throughout these large changes, the momentum flux normalized to 1 AU displays very little systematic variation. In addition, the bulk properties of the polar coronal hole solar wind are quite similar to those observed in high speed streams in the ecliptic plane at 1 AU. Coronal mass ejections and forward and reverse shocks associated with corotating interaction regions have also been observed at higher heliolatitudes, however they are seen less frequently with increasing southern heliolatitude. Ulysses has thus far collected data from 20° of nearly contiguous solar wind flows from the polar coronal hole. We examine these data for characteristic variations with heliolatitude and find that the bulk properties in general show very little systematic variation across the southern polar coronal hole so far.  相似文献

The Ultra Low Energy Isotope Spectrometer (ULEIS) on the ACE spacecraft is an ultra high resolution mass spectrometer designed to measure particle composition and energy spectra of elements He-Ni with energies from ∼45 keV nucl−1 to a few MeV nucl−1. ULEIS will investigate particles accelerated in solar energetic particle events, interplanetary shocks, and at the solar wind termination shock. By determining energy spectra, mass composition, and their temporal variations in conjunction with other ACE instruments, ULEIS will greatly improve our knowledge of solar abundances, as well as other reservoirs such as the local interstellar medium. ULEIS is designed to combine the high sensitivity required to measure low particle fluxes, along with the capability to operate in the largest solar particle or interplanetary shock events. In addition to detailed information for individual ions, ULEIS features a wide range of count rates for different ions and energies that will allow accurate determination of particle fluxes and anisotropies over short (∼few minutes) time scales. The heliosphere is bathed in the supersonic solar wind, which generally creates shocks at any obstacles it encounters: magnetic structures such as coronal mass ejections and planetary magnetospheres, or fast-slow stream interactions such as corotating interaction regions (CIRs) or the termination shock. Each of these shock structures has an associated energetic particle population whose spectra and composition contain clues to the acceleration process and the sources of the particles. Over the past several years, the solar wind composition has been systematically studied, and the long-standing gap between high energy (>1 MeV amu–1) and the plasma ion populations has been closed by instruments capable of measuring the suprathermal ion composition. In CIRs, where it has been possible to observe all the relevant populations, it turns out that the suprathermal ion population near 1.8–2.5 times the solar wind speed is the seed population that gets accelerated, not the bulk particles near the solar wind peak. These new results are of interest to the problem of Galactic Cosmic-Ray (GCR) Acceleration, since the injection and acceleration of GCRs to modest energies is likely to share many features with processes we can observe in detail in the heliosphere.  相似文献

Ulysses Mission investigations, extending from pole-to-pole of the Sun and inner heliosphere in the period 1993-1996, have led to discoveries that will change dramatically models to account for the physical phenomena underlying the 26-day modulation of galactic cosmic rays and anomalous nuclear components and their propagation modes. These new findings also relate to the propagation of low energy nucleons and electrons accelerated by corotating interaction region shocks. Also included are some unpublished measurements that will need to be taken into account in any model for the 26-day modulation phenomena. This report is a brief summary of the principal results from the solar wind, magnetic field and charged particle investigations, and their alternate interpretations.  相似文献

The tilted rotator model is considered using the collisionless supersonic and superalfvenic approximation. The results show that the maximal and minimal solar wind corotating stream velocities appear at the intermediate heliospheric latitudes depending on the tilt angle. The high-speed streams with the strongest velocity difference between maximal and minimal values are expected to be observed at the middle heliolatitudes near 45 degrees. Other consequences of the model are indicated and may be checked during the rapid pole-to-pole Ulysses passage in 1994–1995.  相似文献

The characteristics of the recurrent electron (38–53 keV) and ion (>0.5 MeV) enhancements observed by Ulysses from mid-1992 to April 1994 are presented. The magnitude of the ion flux increases reached a maximum at a latitude of 20°S and decreased afterwards by 23%/degree until early 1994. The magnitude of the electron increases showed a similar trend until May, 1993, after which time it became approximately constant, until it started to increase again in early 1994. The electron enhancements have lagged the protons by up to 5 days once Ulysses left the heliospheric current sheet (mid-1993). The electron spectral index tended to harden (a) during the decay of the event and (b) as the latitude increased, up to 50°S. The events have recurred on a 26.0 day period, but with significant phase shifts over the 25 rotations studied. The H/He ratio decreases across the maximum intensity. The mean minimum value for H/He was 3.5±0.3, lower than that measured in previous studies in the ecliptic plane.  相似文献

Solar wind charge states measured by ULYSSES/SWICS in the south polar hole   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The Ulysses mission now has an extensive data base covering several passes of the south polar coronal hole as the spacecraft proceeds to higher latitudes. Using composition measurements from the SWICS experiment on the Ulysses spacecraft, we have obtained charge state distributions, and hence inferred coronal ionization temperatures, for several solar wind species. In particular, we present an overview of Oxygen ionization temperature measurements, based on the O7+/O6+ ratio, for the period January 1993 until April 1994 (23°S to 61°S heliographic latitude), and detailed Oxygen, Silicon and Iron charge state distributions of the south polar hole during a two month period of nearly continuous hole coverage, Dec 1993–Jan 1994 (45°S to 52°S heliographic latitude).  相似文献

A brief overview on particle injection and acceleration in corotating interaction regions is presented. After introducing the diffusion-convection transport equation for energetic particles we discuss diffusive acceleration at the corotating shocks, stochastic acceleration within the interaction region, and the injection and acceleration of pickup ions at the corotating shocks. Nine coronal mass ejections (CMEs) have been detected in the solar wind by the Ulysses plasma experiment between 31° and 61° South. One of these events, which was also a magnetic cloud, was directly associated with an event observed by the soft X-ray telescope on Yohkoh in which large magnetic loops formed in the solar corona directly beneath Ulysses. This association suggests that the flux rope topology of the magnetic cloud resulted from reconnection between the legs of neighboring magnetic loops within the rising CME. The average CME speed (740 km s–1) at these latitudes was comparable to that of the normal solar wind there and is much greater than average CME speeds observed either in the solar wind in the ecliptic plane or in the corona close to the Sun. We suggest that the same basic acceleration process applies to both slow CMEs and the normal solar wind at any latitude.  相似文献
