Abstract:A new theory of water column photosynthesis as a function of surface light is summarised. The leading parameter is initial slope of the photosynthesis-light curve. It may be possible to estimate this parameter by remote sensing using the Fluorescence Line Imager. Obstacles to the routine implementation of the theory are discussed. The relationship of the new theory to regression models of primary production is discussed.
