Abstract:Seasonal and geomagnetic density variations in the thermosphere can be explained either by a system of thermally driven winds or, equally well, by changes in the turbulence structure. Observations show that both processes take place, but their relative importance has not yet been established. In this paper, a model incorporating both mechanisms is presented. Whereas seasonal changes may be generated by changes in the turbopause height, geomagnetic perturbations may be associated with a turbulent layer above the homopause region.
