Measurements of atmospheric ozone from aircraft and from balloons

The first ozone data from the Northern Hemisphere meridional flight “SIMOC” are presented. The flight was made in May of 1981 from Germany up to 82 °N and then down to the Equator and back with the Falcon 20E German research aircraft. These data include those obtained using a differential solar absorption spectrometer developed and built at the Max-Planck-Institut für Aeronomie in Lindau. Ozone profiles obtained from an intensive series of balloon flights launched in northern Sweden over a two week period are also presented and discussed in terms of the variability in ozone concentration that they demonstrate in the middle atmosphere.
