Investigation of a superheterodyne mixing system with an ‘open structure’ mixer at 337 μm wavelength

Abstract:As local oscillator for a 337 mgrm heterodyne system a stable HCN-laser was built with an output-power of 50 mW. As mixing device an rsquoopen-structurersquo mixer was used integrating the RF-coupling device, the mixer and the IF-transformer. As active mixer-element a special doped GaAs-diode with high lsquocut-oifrsquo frequency was used. Comparison measurements with the 12th harmonic of a 4-mm klystron led to the evaluation of the minimal detectable power with approximately 10–15 WHz–1.
