The hot ion component of the magnetospheric plasma and some relations to the electron component-observations and physical implications

The observations of hot ions in the high altitude ionosphere, at IR _e along the auroral zone magnetic field lines, near the equatorial plane in the inner magnetosphere, in the distant tail, and in the magnetospheric boundary regions are reviewed with particular regard to the relations of the ions to the electrons. The physical knowledge obtained from the observations is summarized.
