Abstract: | Excitation mechanisms of nonmigrating diurnal tides in the MLT region simulated by the Kyushu-GCM are examined. It is shown that the westward propagating diurnal tide with zonal wavenumber s = 2 is mainly excited by nonlinear interactions between the migrating diurnal tide and the stationary planetary wave with zonal wavenumber s = 1, while the nonlinear excitation of the standing diurnal tide with zonal wavenumber s = 0 is less important than the excitation by tropospheric heating. Nonlinear interactions between the migrating diurnal tide and the stationary planetary wave with zonal wavenumber s = 2 are not dominant to excite the westward propagating diurnal tide with zonal wavenumber s = 3, and it is shown that the excitation by tropospheric heating is comparable to the nonlinear excitation. It is also shown that other nonmigrating diurnal tides are excited by tropospheric heating. |
