Abstract: | The author examines methods for prognosticating solar activity for several decades to determine optimum periods for prolonged space flight. The focus of the discussion is the presence of a change in magnetic polarity at the beginning of each 11-year solar cycle, resulting in a 22-year cycle. An historical review of solar cycles determined a super cycle of about 180 years. Using this data, it is determined that solar activity will be weak through the end of the 20th century. |
