Role of newly emerging flux in the flare process
Authors:ER Priest
Institution:Applied Mathematics Department, The University, St Andrews, Scotland
Abstract:New flux emerging from below the photosphere is believed to give rise to small flares and also to be capable of triggering large events when extra energy is stored in the overlying field. A summary is given of the observations of emerging flux, together with the current theoretical ideas on its behaviour.
