The D/H Ratio in Chondrites

The statistical distribution of all available published D/H ratios of carbonaceous chondrites is presented. The possible interpretations of this distribution are reviewed at the global scale of the solar system planetary objects and at the scale defined by the carbonaceous meteorites. New issues concerning the chemical origin of the deuterium enrichment in solar system water and organic molecules are put into light by this exercise. This distribution is a robust constraint on the origin of water on Earth. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.
