Abstract:This paper examines the economics of a very large satellite in geostationary orbit. Present day charges for satellite transponders are used to show that the seemingly high cost of this type of platform is rapidly repaid. Several orbit locations are selected on the basis of current usages and a satellite is configured with the power and mass requirements identified. Costs for the total space segment of a large platform are extrapolated using established cost histories of both satellites and launch vehicles. It is shown that the original investment is repaid in less than three years. After this time, the platform continues to earn revenue.
