The limits of stratofilm®

An abnormally large number of catastrophic failures have occurred in recent years which have prompted a number of investigations. This paper documents the efforts by Winzen engineers to determine the cause of these dangerous failures. It is concluded that catastrophic failure will occur if internal caps separate from the wall of the balloon at too low an altitude. Cap separation may be prevented by the use of external caps.
