Physical conditions in the non-nuclear gas in PKS0349-27

Abstract:We present measurements of velocities and emission line ratios for OIII]/Hβ,NII]/Hα, and SII]/Hα associated with the extended “spiral” structure in the FRII radio galaxy PKS 349-27. The ionized gas clouds split into two distinct velocity systems, separated by as much as 450 km s−1. BPT diagrams constructed from the measured emission line ratios show that neither of these systems is composed of normal HII regions. The excitation conditions in both systems are consistent with either shock heating/ionization or photoionization by relatively powerful, high energy, electromagnetic continuum radiation.
