Abstract: | Elliptical galaxies exhibit a continuum of behaviour between ‘normal’ and highly active objects, with no clear dividing line between the two classes. High-resolution radio observations show that many bright ellipticals contain parsec-scale radio cores which are qualitatively similar to the central engines of radio galaxies but up to a million times less powerful. In contrast, the radio cores of spiral galaxies are qualitatively different from those in ellipticals, providing some clues to why radio galaxies are always ellipticals rather than spirals. |
