Although the auroral substorm has been long regarded as a manifestation of the magnetospheric substorm, a direct relation
of active auroras to certain magnetospheric processes is still debatable. To investigate the relationship, we combine the
data of the UV imager onboard the Polar satellite with plasma and magnetic field measurements by the Geotail spacecraft. The
poleward edge of the auroral bulge, as determined from the images obtained at the LHBL passband, is found to be conjugated
with the region where the oppositely directed fast plasma flows observed in the near-Earth plasma sheet during substorms are
generated. We conclude that the auroras forming the bulge are due to the near-Earth reconnection process. This implies that
the magnetic flux through the auroral bulge is equal to the flux dissipated in the magnetotail during the substorm. Comparison
of the magnetic flux through the auroral bulge with the magnetic flux accumulated in the tail lobe during the growth phase
shows that these parameters have the comparable values. This is a clear evidence of the loading–unloading scheme of substorm
development. It is shown that the area of the auroral bulge developing during substorm is proportional to the total (magnetic
plus plasma) pressure decrease in the magnetotail. These findings stress the importance of auroral bulge observations for
monitoring of substorm intensity in terms of the magnetic flux and energy dissipation.

We report the recent progress in our joint program of real-time mapping of ionospheric electric fields and currents and field-aligned
currents through the Geospace Environment Data Analysis System (GEDAS) at the Solar-Terrestrial Environment Laboratory and
similar computer systems in the world. Data from individual ground magnetometers as well as from the solar wind are collected
by these systems and are used as input for the KRM and AMIE magnetogram-inversion algorithms, which calculate the two-dimensional
distribution of the ionospheric parameters. One of the goals of this program is to specify the solar-terrestrial environment
in terms of ionospheric processes, providing the scientific community with more than what geomagnetic activity indices and
statistical models provide.

A magnetohydrodynamic model of the solar wind flow is constructed using a kinematic approach. It is shown that a phenomenological
conductivity of the solar wind plasma plays a key role in the forming of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) component
normal to the ecliptic plane. This component is mostly important for the magnetospheric dynamics which is controlled by the
solar wind electric field. A simple analytical solution for the problem of the solar wind flow past the magnetosphere is presented.
In this approach the magnetopause and the Earth's bow shock are approximated by the paraboloids of revolution. Superposition
of the effects of the bulk solar wind plasma motion and the magnetic field diffusion results in an incomplete screening of
the IMF by the magnetopause. It is shown that the normal to the magnetopause component of the solar wind magnetic field and
the tangential component of the electric field penetrated into the magnetosphere are determined by the quarter square of the
magnetic Reynolds number. In final, a dynamic model of the magnetospheric magnetic field is constructed. This model can describe
the magnetosphere in the course of the severe magnetic storm. The conditions under which the magnetospheric magnetic flux
structure is unstable and can drive the magnetospheric substorm are discussed. The model calculations are compared with the
observational data for September 24–26, 1998 magnetic storm (Dst
min=−205 nT) and substorm occurred at 02:30 UT on January 10, 1997.

The auroral electrojet index is an important index in monitoring and predicting substorms. A substorms usually includes auroral breakup, auroral electrojet event marked by AE increase, energetic particle injection at geosynchronous orbit, mid-low latitude Pi2, etc. However the question whether an auroral electrojet event corresponds to a substorm remains unanswered. Using the auroral electrojet index in 2004, we analyzed five auroral electrojet events and studied their relation with substorms. The results show that there are three kinds of auroral electrojet events: (1) simultaneous rapid increase of westward auroral electrojet and eastward auroral electrojet; (2) rapid increase of westward auroral electrojet and almost unchangeable eastward auroral electrojet; (3) rapid increase of eastward auroral electrojet and almost unchangeable westward auroral electrojet. Most of auroral electrojet events correspond to substorms. However a few auroral electrojet events are not accompanied by substorms. This situation most often occurs for the auroral electrojet event in which eastward auroral electrojet dominates.

The relationships between the magnetic disturbance onsets, aurora dynamics and particles injections at the geostationary orbit have been analyzed in detail for 25 sawtooth substorms. It is shown that inconsistency between the above signatures of the substorms onset is typical of the powerful sawtooth substorms, unlike the isolated (“classical”) magnetospheric substorms. The distinguishing feature of the aurora in case of saw-tooth substorms is permanently high level of auroral activity irrespective of the magnetic disturbance onsets and the double oval structure of the aurora display. The close relationship between the aurora behavior and the particle injections at geostationary orbit is also broken. The conclusion is made, that the classical concept of the substorm development, put forward by Akasofu (1964) for isolated substorms, is not workable in cases of the sawtooth disturbances, when the powerful solar wind energy pumping into the magnetosphere provides a permanent powerful aurora particle precipitation into the auroral zone.

Consequences of the solar wind input observed as large scale magnetotail dynamics during substorms are reviewed, highlighting
results from statistical studies as well as global magnetosphere/ionosphere observations. Among the different solar wind input
parameters, the most essential one to initiate reconnection relatively close to the Earth is a southward IMF or a solar wind
dawn-to-dusk electric field. Larger substorms are associated with such reconnection events closer to the Earth and the magnetotail
can accumulate larger amounts of energy before its onset. Yet, how and to what extent the magnetotail configuration before
substorm onset differs for different solar wind driver is still to be understood. A strong solar wind dawn-to-dusk electric
field is, however, only a necessary condition for a strong substorm, but not a sufficient one. That is, there are intervals
when the solar wind input is processed in the magnetotail without the usual substorm cycle, suggesting different modes of
flux transport. Furthermore, recent global observations suggest that the magnetotail response during the substorm expansion
phase can be also controlled by plasma sheet density, which is coupled to the solar wind on larger time-scales than the substorm
cycle. To explain the substorm dynamics it is therefore important to understand the different modes of energy, momentum, and
mass transport within the magnetosphere as a consequence of different types of solar wind-magnetosphere interaction with different
time-scales that control the overall magnetotail configuration, in addition to the internal current sheet instabilities leading
to large scale tail current sheet dissipation.
