The influence of microgravity on invasive growth in Saccharomyces cerevisiae

This study investigates the effects of microgravity on colony growth and the morphological transition from single cells to short invasive filaments in the model eukaryotic organism Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Two-dimensional spreading of the yeast colonies grown on semi-solid agar medium was reduced under microgravity in the Σ1278b laboratory strain but not in the CMBSESA1 industrial strain. This was supported by the Σ1278b proteome map under microgravity conditions, which revealed upregulation of proteins linked to anaerobic conditions. The Σ1278b strain showed a reduced invasive growth in the center of the yeast colony. Bud scar distribution was slightly affected, with a switch toward more random budding. Together, microgravity conditions disturb spatially programmed budding patterns and generate strain-dependent growth differences in yeast colonies on semi-solid medium.     

Some new applications of the generalized problem of two fixed centers

A generalized problem of two fixed centers and its limiting version is considered. New possible applications of this problem are obtained. Using a symmetric version of the problem, the external field of gravitation is approximated. The limiting version approximates the inner field.     

Influence of the gas-distributing grid structural features on the flow parameters in the liquid-propellent rocket engine with producer gas afterburning

The analysis of structural features of the gas-distributing grid was carried out by modern facilities of computational gas dynamics to equalize flow parameters upstream of a mixing head in LPRE with producer gas afterburning. For the given simulation conditions we defined the optimal geometrical dimensions of the facets on the gas-distributing grid openings, providing the maximal discharge coefficient and the minimal pressure differential. We also examined the grid design variants with the various distribution of facets of different geometry, which allows the outflow parameters to be varied according to the grid area. It is obtained, that a flat grid with various openings geometry in the sectors makes it possible to provide the best equalization of the pressure and velocity fields upstream of the mixing head and the minimal pressure losses.     

The influence of microgravity on the growth of metals and alloys—The project of Czechoslovak experiment

The crystal growth under near-zero gravity conditions may lead to materials of better crystalline and compositional perfection [1]. Unidirectional solidification of metals is a part of Czechoslovak programme on space research within the framework of Interkosmos [2]. On the model-like systems of metals grown in the space we want to study the effect of foreign atoms on the surface tension and the lattice defects density. The objectives of our ground-based and space experiments are discussed.     

Analysis of stress state in a root-airfoil transition zone of hollow wide chord fan blades

In this paper, under consideration is the complex approach to analyzing the operation of a simulator for the hollow blade made from the VT6 titanium alloy. The stress state parameters in the hollow-monolithic part transition zone of the cantilevered simulator at bending under the distributed load are determined.     

提高电梯保养工作性能之途径(英文)

介绍了香港一家电梯公司所实施的策略品质管理，其品质策略、政策及目标都是以顾客的需求而确立的，持续品质改良已被采纳为公司之策略，用以改良表现及竞争优势。本文提出一个使用工作研究（ｗｏｒｋｓｔｕｄｙ）方法为蓝本而成功履行之品质改良项目。当完成这个项目时，严重缺点率（可能导致意外之缺点率）在两年间已由２％降至０．９％。公司虽耗资港币１１０万元用于这项目，却换来降低因意外赔偿之风险。该方法经证明是有价值的，它是一种改良保养工作表现之有效工具。
