Two special measurements of the energy exchange between earth and space were made in connection with the FGGE. A global monitoring program using wide-field-of-view and scanner detectors from NASA's NIMBUS-7 satellite successfully returned measurements during the entire FGGE. This experiment system also used a black cavity detector to measure the total energy output of the sun to very high precision. A second set of high frequency time and space estimates of the radiation budget were determined from selected geostationary satellite data. Preliminary results from both radiation budget data sets and the solar “constant” measurements will be presented.  相似文献

A new two-dimensional, time-dependent and fully nonlinear model is developed to numerically simulate plane wave motions for internal gravity waves in a non-isothermal and windy atmosphere that accounts for the dissipation due to eddy and molecular processes. The atmosphere has been treated as a well mixed total gas with a constant mean molecular weight. The effects of Rayleigh friction and Newtonian cooling are applied near the upper boundary of the model to simulate the radiation conditions as well as to act as a sponge layer; lateral boundaries are periodic over a horizontal wavelength to simulate a horizontally infinite domain. The thermal excitation to initiate upward propagating waves is spatially localized in the troposphere and is a Gaussian function of time. A time-splitting technique is applied to the finite difference equations that are derived from the Navier–Stokes equations. The time integration for these highly coupled equations is performed using an explicit second order Lax–Wendroff scheme and an implicit Newton–Raphson scheme. The wave solutions derived from the model are found to be broadly agreeable with those derived from a Wentzel–Kramers–Brillouin theory.  相似文献

Secular variations of OH airglow (8,3) band and of the intensity-weighted temperature induced by a gravity wave packet at three latitudes in the northern hemisphere in the Mesosphere/Lower Thermosphere region are investigated using a 2-D, time-dependent, fully nonlinear OH chemistry–dynamics model. A net-cycled average survives due to wave transience and dissipation. The integrated OH (8,3) volume emission rates show a 20 percent increase induced by the wave packet. The corresponding intensity-weighted temperature shows an initial increase up to 2 percent then a gradual decrease for the remainder of the simulation time by the same wave packet. These secular variations could be mistaken as long-period or short-period waves in the airglow observations. Therefore, care must be taken when analyzing the data from observations.  相似文献

This paper reviews the subject of the dissipation of internal gravity waves in the thermosphere and shows how this is related to propagation. Differences of dissipation and heating rates in quiet and disturbed atmospheres are discussed, and the ranges of waves for different source heights in these atmospheres are calculated. Despite heavy damping of the waves, they may explain T.I.D.'s and related airglow observations in middle and low latitudes.  相似文献

Total solar irradiance measurements by ERB/Nimbus-7. A review of nine years   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
The advent of reliable extraterrestrial solar irradiance measurements from satellites has supplied the impetus for new research in solar physics and solar-terrestrial relationships. The records for the principal experiments now extend beyond nine years. The Nimbus-7 measurements began in November 1978 and the Solar Maximum Mission (SMM) results started in February 1980. Both the ERB experiment of Nimbus-7 and the ACRIM experiment of SMM are still operational as of this writing (June 1988). We describe the nine-year Nimbus-7 total solar irradiance data set and compare it with similar data sets from the SMM and other satellite solar monitoring programs. Long-term downward trends of less than 0.02 % per year had been noted during the decaying portion of solar cycle 21 with indications that a leveling off and possible reversal of the trend was being experienced as we enter the new cycle. It had been demonstrated that fluctuations in the data over shorter periods corresponded to solar activity, from a primary discovery of irradiance depletions in times of building large sunspot groups to more subtle effects on the scale of solar rotation. Studies of the frequency spectra of the measurements have advanced the interest in helioseismology or mode analysis. Studies of photospheric activity have advanced by modelling of the sunspot blocking and photospheric brightening versus the measured irradiance. The theories are being extended to longer time-scales which indicate that solar irradiance is higher near solar cycle maximum, as defined by activity, and somewhat lower during the period between cycles. While measurements of total solar irradiance, the solar constant, alone cannot be employed to answer all of the questions of solar physics or helioclimatology, these long-term, high-precision data sets are valuable to both disciplines. The continuation of such measurements to more meaningful, longer time-scales should have a high priority in the international space community.  相似文献

Abstract Modern ecological niches are teeming with an astonishing diversity of microbial life in biofilms closely associated with mineral surfaces, which highlights the remarkable success of microorganisms in conquering the challenges and capitalizing on the benefits presented by the mineral-water interface. Biofilm formation capability likely evolved on early Earth because biofilms provide crucial cell survival functions. The potential toxicity of mineral surfaces toward cells and the complexities of the mineral-water-cell interface in determining the toxicity mechanisms, however, have not been fully appreciated. Here, we report a previously unrecognized role for extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), which form biofilms in shielding cells against the toxicity of mineral surfaces. Using colony plating and LIVE/DEAD staining methods in oxide suspensions versus oxide-free controls, we found greater viability of wild-type, EPS-producing strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa PAO1 compared to their isogenic knockout mutant with defective biofilm-producing capacity. Oxide toxicity was specific to its surface charge and particle size. High resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images and assays for highly reactive oxygen species (hROS) on mineral surfaces suggested that EPS shield via both physical and chemical mechanisms. Intriguingly, qualitative as well as quantitative measures of EPS production showed that toxic minerals induced EPS production in bacteria. By determining the specific toxicity mechanisms, we provide insight into the potential impact of mineral surfaces in promoting increased complexity of cell surfaces, including EPS and biofilm formation, on early Earth. The need to provide aircrew with a timely warning of a dangerously close approach to the terrain is discussed, along with the benefits this capability is expected to provide and specific requirements that it must fulfil. The ground proximity warning techniques that are available are reviewed, and their benefits and limitations are assessed. The GEC Avionics Ground and Obstacle Collision Avoidance Technique (GOCAT) is described. The particular advantages of the GOCAT approach are identified. Because GOCAT uses a database of the terrain and obstacles around the aircraft it has a very low nuisance alarm rate but will always generate a warning when the aircraft is in a dangerous situation. Issues of parameter selection, search area definition and system limitations are examined. The results of a GOCAT simulation are presented. The system performance parameters are discussed, and database requirements are reviewed. The characteristics of a practical implementation for both civil and military applications are briefly stated  相似文献
