We have studied the evolution of the anomalous cosmic ray component at ULYSSES using observations of the quiet time helium fluxes obtained with the COSPIN Low Energy Telescope during the years from launch in October 1990 to the latest data in 1994. Shown are preliminary results of measurements in the energy range from 4.0 to 19 MeV/n. Following the drop in solar activity in late 1991, the low energy cosmic ray helium flux started to increase and continue to rise until the end of 1993, signifying the appearance of the anomalous component at ULYSSES.  相似文献

We present and compare observations of energetic protons during the two first transits of the Ulysses spacecraft from low to high latitudes in the southern heliosphere. Protons in the energy range 1.8–3.8 MeV from the COSPIN experiment are studied for global trends and in relation to some ambient structures in the solar wind (corotating interaction region, forward/reverse shock). The global trends show the large dependence on the heliospheric condition and solar activity, including indications of a larger ambient particle population during the rising phase of solar activity and more efficient solar wind particle accelerators during the declining phase. More enhancements in the proton flux intensity are time associated with forward shocks than reverse contrary to first pass. Recurrent structures are found even during the second transit. Some latitude dependent periodicities are observed that could relate to the differential solar rotation. Approved in October 2000 by ESA's Science Programme Committee as a flexi-mission, the Solar Orbiter will studythe Sun and unexplored regions of the inner heliosphere from a unique orbit that brings the probe to within 45 solar radii (0.21 AU) of our star, and to solar latitudes as high as 38°. This orbit will allow the Solar Orbiter to make fundamental contributions to our understanding of the acceleration and propagation of energetic particles in the extended solar atmosphere. During quasi-heliosynchronous phases of the orbit, Solar Orbiter will track a given region of the solar surface for several days, making possible unprecedented studies of the sources of impulsive and CME-related particle events. The scientific payload to be carried by the probe will include a sophisticated remote-sensing package, as well as state-of-the-art in-situ instruments. The multi-wavelength, multi-disciplinary approach of Solar Orbiter, combined with its novel location, represents a powerful tool for studies of energetic particle phenomena.  相似文献

We review the observed properties of anomalous cosmic rays and the present status of our knowledge of the processes by which they originate. We compiled a comprehensive set of ACR energy spectral data from various spacecraft throughout the heliosphere during the passes of Ulysses over the poles of the Sun and present first results of a detailed modeling effort. In several contributions, we discuss the questions of injection and possible pre-acceleration of pickup ions, summarize new observations on the ionic charge composition, and present new results on the composition of minor ions in ACRs.  相似文献

The consequences of the interaction between the solar wind and the local interstellar medium for the wind region enclosed by the heliospheric shock are reviewed. After identifying the principal mechanisms to influence the dynamics of the solar wind, an approach allowing the simultaneous incorporation of neutral atoms, pick-up ions, cosmic rays and energetic electrons into a multifluid model of the expanding wind plasma is outlined. The effects of these particle species are discussed in detail, with special emphasis on the electron component which behaves more like a quasi-static hot gas rather than an expanding fluid. This electron gas is effectively trapped within a three-dimensional trough of a circumsolar electric potential whose outer fringes are possibly determined by the density distribution of anomalous cosmic rays. The electrons are proven to be a globally structered component of great importance for the solar wind momentum flow contributing to a triggering of the solar wind dynamics by asymmetric interstellar boundary conditions. Finally, the consequences for the relative motion of the Sun and the local interstellar medium as well as for the solar system as a whole are described.  相似文献

The Ulysses mission has provided the first in-situ observations of the solar wind covering all solar latitudes from the equator to the poles in both hemispheres. The measurements from the first polar passes, made at near-minimum solar activity conditions, have confirmed the basic picture established on the basis of remote sensing techniques: the high-latitude wind is fast, and originates in the polar coronal holes. The detailed in-situ observations have, however, revealed a number of features related to the global solar wind structure that were not expected: the transition between slow and fast wind was relatively abrupt, followed by a slight increase in speed toward the poles; the mass flux is almost independent of latitude, with only a modest increase at the equator; the momentum flux is significantly higher over the poles than near the equator, suggesting a non-circular cross-section for the flanks of the heliosphere.  相似文献

We present observations of energetic ions from the Ulysses COSPIN Low Energy Telescope in the mid and high-latitude regions of the heliosphere prior to and during the first polar pass of the Ulysses spacecraft. After the encounter with Jupiter, Ulysses started on its journey out-of-the-ecliptic. Between 13°S and 29°S the spacecraft sampled the solar wind from both the streamer belt and the polar coronal hole. Here, co-rotating magnetic structures with forward and reverse shocks and containing accelerated energetic ions were observed. At latitudes greater than 29°S, Ulysses was completely immersed in the solar wind from the polar coronal hole. Here the co-rotating magnetic structures were weaker, and in general had only reverse shocks, but were still capable of accelerating the energetic ions, albeit with reduced intensity. The most recent results show that beyond 50°S, very few if any, reverse shocks are observed. However, accelerated ions from magnetic interaction regions are still observed. We report also on an intensity enhancement at 50°S due to the passage of a high-latitude CME.  相似文献

Our knowledge of how galactic and anomalous cosmic rays are modulated in the inner heliosphere has been dramatically enlarged as a result of measurements from several missions launched in the past ten years. Among them, Ulysses explored the polar regions of the inner heliosphere during the last solar minimum period and is now revisiting southern polar latitudes under solar maximum conditions. This gives us for the first time the possibility to compare modulation of cosmic rays at high heliographic latitudes during such different time periods. We present data from different instruments on board the Ulysses spacecraft together with 1 AU measurements in the ecliptic. In this paper we focus on measurements that have direct implications for our understanding of modulation of cosmic rays in the inner heliosphere. The scientific rationale of the Solar Orbiter is to provide, at high spatial (35 km pixel size) and temporal resolution, observations of the solar atmosphere and unexplored inner heliosphere. Novel observations will be made in the almost heliosynchronous segments of the orbits at heliocentric distances near 45 R and out of the ecliptic plane at the highest heliographic latitudes of 30° – 38°. The Solar Orbiter will achieve its wide-ranging aims with a suite of sophisticated instruments through an innovative design of the orbit. The first near-Sun interplanetary measurements together with concurrent remote observations of the Sun will permit us to determine and understand, through correlative studies, the characteristics of the solar wind and energetic particles in close linkage with the plasma and radiation conditions in their source regions on the Sun. Over extended periods the Solar Orbiter will deliver the first images of the polar regions and the side of the Sun invisible from the Earth.  相似文献

Moraal and Steenberg (1999), showed that the peak energy in the anomalous cosmic ray spectra is independent of the radial distance up to a few AU away from the termination shock but dependent on the solar wind speed, the radius of the termination shock and the scattering strength. In this paper we will discuss the variation of the cosmic ray oxygen energy spectrum as measured by the Ulysses EPAC and the COSPIN/LET on board Ulysses. We found that the peak energy decreased from ∼5 MeV nucl−1, when Ulysses was at high northern heliographic latitudes embedded in the fast solar wind to ∼3.5 MeV n−1, in the streamer belt. The shift towards lower energy might also be caused by changing modulation although Voyager measurements indicate no variation of the ACR Oxygen spectrum at ∼60 AU.
