IUE has extended the grasp of ultraviolet astronomy to cover active galaxies and quasars fainter than the sixteenth magnitude. These observations have:(i) provided a diagnostic for the source of ionization in active galaxies,(ii) cast light on the excitation mechanism of the Fe II lines,(iii) shown the broad hydrogen lines in Seyferts and quasars are not in their recombination ratios,(iv) demonstrated the absence of gas in BL Lac objects,(v) supported the gravitational lens explanation of the double quasar,(vi) demonstrated the presence of a hot (30 000 K) black body in active nuclei,(vii) discovered stratification of the ionization conditions in the Broad Line Regions of active nuclei. 相似文献

NGC 4151 was observed four times in Nov. 83. The results indicate that: a) there exists a correlation between the X-ray and UV fluxes on the long term; b) the soft X-ray excess between 0.1 and 1 keV is probably steeper than expected from the leaky absorber model by Holt et al (1980); c)the spectral fit to the ME data, after correction for a soft component, yields =1,73±0.27, NH=(15.2±2.2)×1022 cm–2, E.W.(Fe line)=0.208±0.084 keV, and does not require a strong overabundance of Fe in the absorber. The relationship between NH and the strength of the broad emission lines is commented. 相似文献

We investigate links between the observational environment as experienced by the Hipparcos satellite and the performance of
the spacecraft and payload instrumentation, with particular emphasis on finding out whether some of these effects may have
been inadequately represented in instrument calibrations and could thus have affected the scientific results of the mission.
Scan-coverage and radiation effects are primarily random effects with only some long-term systematics. However, long- (days
to weeks) and short-term (hours) temperature variations reflected in the performance of some of the spacecraft instrumentation.
It is shown that only a small sign of some long-term thermal variations could be detected in the payload instrumentation.
These findings further limit the scope left for the occurrence of large-scale correlated errors in the Hipparcos astrometric
data. On the other hand, a number of great circles were identified which showed a highly significant drift of the basic angle,
which had not been detected in the preparation of the published data. The data from these circles may have, in some cases,
led to, very localised, slightly anomalous results, in particular where stars are accidentally affected by two or more of
such circles.
This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date. 相似文献
