A mechanism whereby sound is generated by the motion of vortices in the human lung is described. This mechanism is believed to be responsible for most of the sound which is generated both on inspiration and expiration in normal lungs. Mathematical expressions for the frequencies of sound generated, which depend only upon the axial flow velocity and diameters of the bronchi, are derived. This theory allows the location within the bronchial tree from which particular sounds emanate to be determined. Redistribution of pulmonary blood volume following transition from Earth gravity to the weightless state probably alters the caliber of certain airways and doubtless alters sound transmission properties of the lung. We believe that these changes can be monitored effectively and non-invasively by spectral analysis of pulmonary sound.  相似文献

Three-dimensional buoyancy driven flows in vertical cylinders are simulated with a finite difference technique. Asymmetric convective flows are studied for three values of the (length-to-radius) aspect ratio A. One result concerns the occurrence of asymmetric convection in a flat A=0.485 cylinder for Pr=6.7, near the threshold and up to 3Rac (where Rac is the critical Rayleigh number and Pr is the Prandtl number). Complex (steady and time-dependent) supercritical regimes have been simulated in cylinders of aspect ratios A=2 and A=4 for Pr=0.02 and in ranges of Ra up to 8Rac and 6Rac, respectively. The flow patterns are analysed graphically and discussed with respect to a weakly nonlinear analysis and to experiments. In a particular case, A=4 and Pr=0.02, an oscillatory motion has been obtained and some features of the flow pattern are shown during a period.  相似文献

Recent advances in performance of chemical double layer capacitors (DLC) with aqueous and non-aqueous electrolytes have made it possible to seriously consider them for commercialization. Non-aqueous (organic) carbon based laboratory monopolar devices have recently met key U.S. Department of Energy (DoE) mid-term specifications (> 5 WNkg, >500 W/kg and >100,000 life cycles) for load-leveling electric vehicles batteries. All DLC technologies currently under development by DoE are discussed. Each technology has distinct advantages and none are clear winners at this time. A study has been completed by the General Electric Company on the interface electronics needed to best utilize the energy of capacitors for load-leveling batteries. System costs are presented based on this study, several battery technologies, and capacitor projections  相似文献
