Knowledge of the observable properties of orbital debris is necessary to validate debris models for both the low Earth orbit (LEO) and the geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO). Current methods determine the size and mass of orbital debris based on knowledge or assumption of the material type of the piece. Improvement in the knowledge of material is the goal of the research described herein. The process of using spectral absorption features to determine the material type is explored. A review of the optical measurements of orbital debris as well as current research in the area is discussed. Reflectances of common spacecraft materials are compared. The need for, and advances made possible by obtaining real data are explored. The prospects of the venture are investigated.  相似文献

During a recent experimental test campaign performed in the framework of ESA Contract 16721, the ballistic performance of multiple satellite-representative Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP)/Aluminium honeycomb sandwich panel structural configurations (GOCE, Radarsat-2, Herschel/Planck, BeppoSax) was investigated using the two-stage light-gas guns at EMI. The experimental results were used to develop and validate a new empirical Ballistic Limit Equation (BLE), which was derived from an existing Whipple-shield BLE. This new BLE provided a good level of accuracy in predicting the ballistic performance of stand-alone sandwich panel structures. Additionally, the equation is capable of predicting the ballistic limit of a thin Al plate located at a standoff behind the sandwich panel structure. This thin plate is the representative of internal satellite systems, e.g. an Al electronic box cover, a wall of a metallic vessel, etc. Good agreement was achieved with both the experimental test campaign results and additional test data from the literature for the vast majority of set-ups investigated. For some experiments, the ballistic limit was conservatively predicted, a result attributed to shortcomings in correctly accounting for the presence of high surface density multi-layer insulation on the outer facesheet. Four existing BLEs commonly applied for application with stand-alone sandwich panels were reviewed using the new impact test data. It was found that a number of these common approaches provided non-conservative predictions for sandwich panels with CFRP facesheets.  相似文献

This paper proposes a method of collision avoidance planning using automatic dependent surveillance-broadcast (ADS-B) and dynamic programming (DP). It in essence allows air traffic control (ATC) within the cockpit for remote or uncontrolled airspace and is a step toward Free Flight. This paper reviews the approach to collision avoidance in the aircraft industry and to similar problems in other industries. DP is one solution method used in other industries for the problem of path planning to avoid collisions with fixed obstacles. The solution proposed here for the aircraft case uses DP applied to the moving obstacle case. The problem is first simplified by assuming fixed obstacles for the cost minimisation algorithms. These fixed obstacles are then moved with time and the minimisation process is started again. Although this method works well in most cases, situations can be constructed where this method fails, allowing a collision. A modified approach is proposed, where the movement of obstacles is included more explicitly in the cost minimisation algorithm. This modification allows solutions which are complete and ensures safe maneuvres and should be considered as an aid to the Traffic alert and Collision Avoidance System (TCAS)  相似文献

One main function of the connective tissues is to provide cells with a mechanically resistant attachment support required for survival, division and differentiation. All cells contain membrane-anchored attachment proteins able to recognize specific chemical motifs in the extracellular macromolecules forming the supporting scaffold, made of various types of collagen, adhesive glycoproteins, elastin, proteoglycans, etc... These cell-matrix interactions are mainly mediated by receptors of the integrins family, heterodimeric molecules made of an extracellular domain connected through a transmembrane sequence to an intracytoplasmic tail. Upon recognition of the extracellular ligand, the clustering and activation of the integrins result in the recruitment of a complex of proteins and formation of the focal adhesion plaque, containing both cytoskeletal and catalytic signaling molecules. Activation results in polymerization of actin and formation of stress fibers. These structures establish a physical link between the extracellular matrix components and the cytoskeleton through the integrins providing a continuous path acting as a mechanotransducer. This connection is used by the cells to perform their mechanical functions as adhesion, migration and traction. In vitro experimental models using fibroblasts in a collagen gel demonstrate that cells are in mechanical equilibrium with their support which regulates their replicative and biosynthetic phenotype. The present review discusses the molecular structures operating in the transmission of the mechanical messages from the support to the connective tissue cells, and their effect on the cellular machinery. We present arguments for investigating these mechanisms in understanding the perception of reduced gravity and the resulting reaction leading to microgravity induced pathologies.  相似文献
