Ariel VI observations of Cygnus X-2 have revealed a rather flat spectrum between 0.1 and 1.5 keV with variable emission at low energy. Of the two conflicting interpretations of this object in terms of i) a distant high-luminosity (Lx 1038 ergs s−1) binary and ii) a nearby low-luminosity (Lx 1035 ergs s−1) degenerate dwarf system, our measurements support the latter.  相似文献

We examine X-ray maps of the whole sky covering energies from 0.1 to 6 keV. We model Loop I X-ray emission as being caused by an old supernova that exploded into an already warm interstellar medium. After comparison with Loop III we deduce that there may be a general temperature gradient in the gas as we move away from the plane in the northern galactic hemisphere.  相似文献

Test instrumentation is described for use in the measurement of threshold sensitivities and noise bandwidths of narrow-band phase-locked receivers. The method is statistical in nature with the data being recorded digitally by a counter and printer. Scale factors can be selected for convenient relation of the data to the standard deviations, 1,2, or 3 sigma. Curves are included showing the results of a typical experiment.  相似文献

he Swift Gamma-Ray Explorer is designed to make prompt multiwavelength observations of gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and GRB afterglows. The X-ray telescope (XRT) enables Swift to determine GRB positions with a few arcseconds accuracy within 100 s of the burst onset. The XRT utilizes a mirror set built for JET-X and an XMM-Newton/EPIC MOS CCD detector to provide a sensitive broad-band (0.2–10 keV) X-ray imager with effective area of > 120 cm2 at 1.5 keV, field of view of 23.6 × 23.6 arcminutes, and angular resolution of 18 arcseconds (HPD). The detection sensitivity is 2×10−14 erg cm−2 s−1 in 104 s. The instrument is designed to provide automated source detection and position reporting within 5 s of target acquisition. It can also measure the redshifts of GRBs with Fe line emission or other spectral features. The XRT operates in an auto-exposure mode, adjusting the CCD readout mode automatically to optimize the science return for each frame as the source intensity fades. The XRT will measure spectra and lightcurves of the GRB afterglow beginning about a minute after the burst and will follow each burst for days or weeks. Dedicated to David J. We present light curves of EX Hydrae in the 1–10 keV range obtained with the medium energy experiment of EXOSAT. The 67-min modulation was observed with a peak-to-peak amplitude of 36 % in the 1–4 keV range and of 24 % in the 4–9 keV range. Newly discovered was a partial X-ray eclipse of 3 min full width which coincides with the optical eclipse and is seen at all energies. The results are interpreted in terms of an intermediate-polar (DQ Her star) model of EX Hydrae.  相似文献

We discuss the possibility that CI and CM carbonaceous chondrites are fragments of extinct cometary nuclei. Theoretical and observational work suggests that comets evolve into asteroids, and several extinct cometary nuclei are now suspected to be among the near Earth object population. This population is the most likely source of meteorites and consequently, we may expect that some meteorites are from extinct comets in this population. The mineralogy and chemistry of CI and CM chondrites is consistent with the view that they originate from asteroidal objects of carbonaceous spectral classes, and these objects in turn may have a cometary origin. We do not suggest that CI or CM chondrites are directly delivered by active comets during perihelion passage or that these chondrites come from cometary debris in meteor streams. Instead, we summarize arguments suggesting that CI and CM chondrites represent fragments of cometary nuclei which evolved into near Earth asteroids after losing their volatiles. The investigation of cardiovascular function necessarily involves a consideration of the exchange of substances at the capillary. If cardiovascular function is compromised or in any way altered during exposure to zero gravity in space, then it stands to reason that microvascular function is also modified. We have shown that an increase in cardiac output similar to that reported during simulated weightlessness is associated with a doubling of the number of post-capillary venules and a reduction in the number of arterioles by 35%. If the weightlessness of space travel produces similar changes in cardiopulmonary volume and cardiac output, a reasonable expectation is that astronauts will undergo venous neovascularization. We have developed an animal model in which to correlate microvascular and systemic cardiovascular function. The microcirculatory preparation consists of a lightweight, thermo-neutral chamber implanted around intact skeletal muscle on the back of a rat. Using this technique, the performed microvasculature of the cutaneous maximus muscle may be observed in the conscious, unanesthetized animal. Microcirculatory variables which may be obtained include venular and arteriolar numbers, lengths and diameters, single vessel flow velocities, vasomotion, capillary hematocrit anastomoses and orders of branching. Systemic hemodynamic monitoring of cardiac output by electromagnetic flowmetry, and arterial and venous pressures allows correlation of macro- and microcirculatory changes at the same time, in the same animal. Observed and calculated hemodynamic variables also include pulse pressure, heart rate, stroke volume, total peripheral resistance, aortic compliance, minute work, peak aortic flow velocity and systolic time interval. In this manner, an integrated assessment of total cardiovascular function may be obtained in the same animal without the complicating influence of anesthetics.  相似文献

We report new results obtained from the EXOSAT AO- 1 observation of the intermediate polar V1223 Sgr. The detection of a 12.4 minute period in the medium energy X-ray flux with an associated hardness ratio variation has been previously reported in Osborne et al. (1984a). Further work has revealed: a narrow dip at the phase zero in the folded medium energy light curve; 30% modulation in the low energy X-ray (3000 Lexan) flux; a count rate ratio from 3 filters which allow the presence of a bright low temperature blackbody component (kT = .05 –. 40 KeV); and a phase resolved ME spectrum which must have two or more components when the source is bright. The hot white dwarf HZ43 was observed by the soft X-ray experiment on the Ariel 6 satellite from 1980 March 1.8 to March 8.7. The pulse height spectrum has been fit to an input black body spectrum of temperature 140 000 K. An upper limit of 10% has been placed on the source variability on time scales of minutes.  相似文献

Observations of Cygnus X-1 during the high-low transition of June–July 1980 reveal an intense flux between 0.5 and 1.5 keV. Although the intensity broadly follows the 1–12 keV flux through the transition, there is no evidence of variations in the shape of the energy spectrum. The implications of these results and derived limits on the minute-to-minute variability are discussed.  相似文献
