During the last several years significant progress has been made in understanding MHD turbulence in the Earth’s plasma sheet. Due to the statistically transitory properties of fluctuations, finite size and boundary effects, however, issues of fundamental importance remain unresolved. Here we concentrate on such intrinsic features of plasma sheet turbulence as its origin and dynamical nature. In particular, we investigate bursty bulk flow driven multi-scale transfer of energy towards the dissipation scale, and provide evidence for the presence of non-linear interactions. We show that, in contrast with previous results, Alfvénic fluctuations together with 2D eddy interactions may appear as important constituents of turbulence in the plasma sheet.  相似文献

The adsorptive and/or catalytic properties of clays, silicates in general, and other minerals are well known. More recently, their probable role in prebiotic syntheses of bio-organic compounds has become a matter of record. We demonstrate that, in addition to their role in de novo formation of important biomolecules, clays, micas, fibrous silicates and other minerals mimick the activities of contemporary enzymes including oxidases, esterases, phosphatases and glucosidases. The existence of such capabilities in substances likely to be represented on the surfaces of Earth-like planets may offer a challenge to the technology and design of remote life detection systems which must then distinguish between bona fide biological chemistry and mineral-base pseudometabolism. It also raises questions about the importance of mineral surfaces in post-mortem transformations of organic metabolites in our own biosphere.  相似文献

We have selected four widely different flares from the early period of operations of the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) on SMM to illustrate the characteristic imaging properties of this experiment. For the small flare of April 4, 1980, we demonstrate the instrument's capability for locating a compact source. In the weak, but extensive, flare of April 6 we show how well the instrument can display spatial structure, and also the low level of the instrument background. In the 1B flare of April 7 we are able to locate positions of the X-ray emission in the soft and hard channels, and estimate the positional variations of the emission patches. Finally, in the IN flare of April 10, which produced the strongest hard X-ray burst we have seen so far, we repeat some of the studies made for the April 7 event, and also demonstrate the capability of the HXIS instrument to study the development, with high time resolution, of individual 8″ × 8″ elements of the flare.  相似文献

We note the common existence of a supersonic jet structure locally embedded within a surrounding transonic flow field in the hitherto unrelated phenomena of unstable gaseous detonation and hypervelocity blunt body shock wave interaction. Extending prior results that demonstrate the consequences of reduced endothermic reaction rate for the supersonic jet fluid in the blunt body case, we provide an explanation for observations of locally reduced OH PLIF signal in images of the keystone reaction zone structure of weakly unstable detonations. Modeling these flow features as exothermically reacting jets with similarly reduced reaction rates, we demonstrate a mechanism for jetting of bulk pockets of unreacted fluid with potentially differing kinetic pathways into the region behind the primary detonation front of strongly unstable mixtures. We examine the impact of mono-atomic and diatomic diluents on transverse structure. The results yield insight into the mechanisms of transition and characteristic features of both weakly and strongly unstable mixtures.  相似文献

Some data obtained in the course of computer-aided simulation of a process of plane AMg6 alloy specimen rolling in the CAE-system MSC.SuperForm are presented. The influence of a real material structure upon the stress-strain state and the flow pattern of layers throughout the specimen height is taken into account. Also determined are the values of total pressure of metal on the rolls and a moment of rolling with the use of the isotropic and anisotropic finite element models (FEM) of specimens.  相似文献

We have computed the cloud reflectance and the optical thickness with the aid of atmospheric models from the first eleven months (April 1970 – February 1971) of Backscattered Ultraviolet (BUV) data over the pacific ocean. Both the cloud and the optical thickness are derived from the 380 nm channel by assuming that the entire IFOV (200 Km.) is filled by stratiform clouds. Our analysis show a large variability in the cloud reflectance in both the intertropic conversion zone (ITCZ) and the high latitudes. We also find that for 90% of the time in tropics, the clouds have optical thickness < 10. Our analysis of clouds with optical thickness between 10 and 20 show that in tropics the minimum frequency coincides with the dry zone at 2.5°s and the maximum frequency for clouds of optical thickness 10–20 is greater in summer than in winter and irrespective of the season, 50% of the time the clouds have optical thickness less than 13.  相似文献

High-quality multispectral measurements from satellites, and the recent development of multiple-window techniques to correct infrared brightness temperatures for atmospheric attenuation, have enabled marked improvements in global mapping of sea surface temperatures. The 4-km resolution data are in two visual bands and three atmospheric windows in the thermal infrared from the advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on NOAA's operational polar satellites. Various threshold and/or spatial homogeniety tests are applied to small data arrays to discriminate nominally cloud-free samples for subsequent processing. Tests of the multi-channel equations against independent buoy data gave bias = 0.42C and scatter = 0.62C. Global statistical comparisons with ships indicate significant improvements in accuracy and coverage over previous satellite-derived surface temperatures.  相似文献

When the problem of predicting the past, present, or future value of a polynomial signal or any of its derivatives is considered, where the signal is in white Gaussian noise, the standard approach has been to minimize mean-square-error with constraints by use of Lagrange multipliers. In this paper an alternate approach is described, using results of Rao and Bhattacharyya from the statistical literature, which reduce the specified prediction problem to a simple one requiring no formal minimizations and no use of Lagrange multipliers. It further has the advantage of yielding the covariances between estimates of the polynomial and its derivates. Useful engineering formulas for smoothing and prediction are developed in the main part of the paper. These include both filter and covariance expressions. A tutorial discussion of the theory is given in two appendixes.  相似文献
