Our understanding of the upper atmosphere of unmagnetized bodies such as Mars, Venus and Titan has improved significantly in this decade. Recent observations by in situ and remote sensing instruments on board Mars Express, Venus Express and Cassini have revealed characteristics of the neutral upper atmospheres (exospheres) and of energetic neutral atoms (ENAs). The ENA environment in the vicinity of the bodies is by itself a significant study field, but ENAs are also used as a diagnostic tool for the exosphere and the interaction with the upstream plasmas. Synergy between theoretical and modeling work has also improved considerably. In this review, we summarize the recent progress of our understanding of the neutral environment in the vicinity of unmagnetized planets.  相似文献

Published observations on the response times following gravistimulation (horizontal positioning) of Chara rhizoids and developing roots of vascular plants with normal and "starchless" amyloplasts were reviewed and compared. Statolith motion was found to be consistent with gravitational sedimentation opposed by elastic deformation of an intracellular material. The time required for a statolith to sediment to equilibrium was calculated on the basis of its buoyant density and compared with observed sedimentation times. In the examples chosen, the response time following gravistimulation (from horizontal positioning to the return of downward growth) could be related to the statolith sedimentation time. Such a relationship implies that the transduction step is rapid in comparison with the perception step following gravistimulation of rhizoids and developing roots.  相似文献

The operational Terrestrial Reference Frames (TRFs) realized through the evaluation of broadcast ephemerides for GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, BeiDou-2 and BeiDou-3 have been compared to IGS14, the TRF realized by the International GNSS Service (IGS). The TRFs realized by the GPS, GLONASS, Galileo, and BeiDou-2 and BeiDou-3 broadcast ephemerides are the orbital realizations of WGS 84 (G1762′), PZ90.11, GTRF19v01, and BDCS respectively. These TRFs are compared using up to 56 days of data (21 July-14 Sept 2019) at a 5 or 15-min rate. The operational TRFs are compared to IGS14 in a 7-parameter similarity (Helmert) transformation. Numerical results show that the operational GNSS TRFs differ from IGS14 at a level no greater than 4 cm for Galileo, 6 cm for GPS and BeiDou-3, 13 cm for GLONASS, and 48 cm for a limited set of BeiDou-2 Medium Earth Orbit (MEO) vehicles.  相似文献

A part task simulation study was performed to determine the ability of pilots to land an aircraft using head up display (HUD) guidance symbology overlaying an emulated millimeter wave imagery. The task was to land in Category IIIa weather at a Category I facility. Three image parameters were varied: image update rate, image processing latency, and the luminance contrast ratio of the runway image to the background noise. ILS beam bending that was representative of a Category I facility was randomly varied across the experimental runs. Nine pilots completed the test matrix. The coronal magnetic field in the northern polar coronal hole in 1986 is predicted on the basis of the photospheric magnetic field observations and the horizontal current-current sheet coronal model (Zhao and Hoeksema, 1993). The predicted magnetic field intensity is stronger near the center of the hole than near the edge. The calculated expansion factor for the entire hole does not match the expansion factor of any flux tube in the hole, suggesting that it would not be appropriate to use the expansion factor for entire hole to represent the divergence of the flux tube in analyzing the acceleration and heating of the plasma in coronal holes.  相似文献

Fundamental biological experiments with bacteria, yeast, and mammalian cells irradiated with ions heavier than helium indicate that maximal probability of single-hit inactivation does not occur when the ion has LET below about 100-200 keV/micrometer. Theoretical treatments of cell inactivation data and the radiation chemistry in particle tracks are consistent with this finding. If a "microlesion" is defined as a linear array, within a tissue, of cells inactivated with maximum probability, surrounded by non-lethally damaged cells, then, by this definition, there must be an LET below which "microlesion" damage cannot be expected. In a retrospective survey of experimental literature in which single-particle effects in tissues were sought, it was found that little or no evidence has been reported supporting single-particle effects in tissues when LET was below 200 keV/micrometer, while some experimenters who irradiated tissues with particles having LET greater than 200 keV/micrometer reported effects that could be attributed to single-particle tracks.  相似文献

The role of ionizing radiation in general, and cosmic radiation in particular, in the evolution of organisms on the earth by adaptation and natural selection is considered in a series of questions: (1) Are there times during the evolution of the earth and of life when genetic material could be exposed to heavy ion radiation? (2) Throughout the course of chemical and biological evolution on the earth, what fraction of environmental mutagenesis could be attributable to cosmic and/or solar ionizing radiation? (3) Is ionizing radiation an agent of adaptation or selection, or both? (4) What can the cladistics of the evolution of genetic repair tell us about the global history of genotoxic selection pressures? Relative Biological Effectiveness (RBE) and Quality Factor (Q) at extreme values of Linear Energy Transfer (LET) have been determined on the basis of experiments with single-cell systems and specific tissue responses. In typical single cell systems, each heavy particle (Ar or Fe) passes through a single cell or no cell. In tissue end-point experiments each heavy particle passes through several cells, and the LET can exceed 200 keV/micrometer in every cell. In most laboratory animal tissue systems, however, only a small portion of the hit cells are capable of expressing the end-point of interest to the investigator, such as cell killing, mutation or carcinogenesis. The following question must therefore be addressed: Do RBE's and Q factors derived from single-cell experiments properly account for the increased probability of multiple-cell damage by HZE tracks? A model is offered in which measured radiation effects and known tissue properties are combined to estimate the value of a multiplier of damage effectiveness on the basis of number of cells at risk, p3n, per track containing a hit cell, where n is the number of cells per track, based on tissue and organ geometry, and P3 is the probability that a cell in the track is capable of expressing the experimental end-point.  相似文献

We have developed a new model of the coronal and interplanetary magnetic field. The model includes the effects of large-scale horizontal electric currents flowing in the inner corona, of the warped heliospheric current sheet, and of heliospheric volume currents in the super-Alfvenic solar wind. The model determines the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) strength as well as its polarity from measurements of the photospheric magnetic field. A detailed comparison between the observed and calculated in-ecliptic IMF Bx in Cycles 22, confirms the fitness of the optimal set of free parameters inferred using data in Cycle 21. We can predict the latitudinal gradient of Bx in the declining phase of Cycle 22 and the temporal variation of the amplitude of the radial component of the IMF at various latitudes. The calculated IMF polarity and Bx strength agree best with the in-ecliptic observations when the photospheric field (measured with a 5250Å magnetograph) is scaled up by a factor of two. Ulysses may provide the critical data to improve the model and check these inferences.  相似文献

Deep and frequent Global Positioning System (GPS) signal fading due to strong ionospheric scintillation is a major concern for GPS-guided aviation in equatorial areas during high solar activity. A GPS aviation receiver may lose carrier tracking lock under deep fading, and a lost channel cannot be used for position calculation until lock is reestablished. Hence, frequent loss of lock due to frequent fading can significantly reduce the availability of GPS aviation. However, the geometric diversity of the satellites can mitigate scintillation impact on GPS aviation depending on the correlation level of deep fades between satellites. This paper proposes a metric to measure the correlation level of two fading channels from the perspective of GPS aviation. Using this metric, the satellite-to-satellite correlation is studied based on real scintillation data. The low satellite-to-satellite correlation shown in this paper envisions notable availability benefit from the geometric diversity of satellites under strong scintillation. In addition, this paper proposes a way to generate correlated fading processes with arbitrary correlation coefficients. Using this correlated fading process model, the availability of Localizer Performance with Vertical guidance (LPV)-200 under severe scintillation scenarios is analyzed. The result emphasizes the importance of a fast reacquisition capability of an aviation receiver after a brief outage, which is not currently mandated by the aviation receiver performance standards.  相似文献
