In 1923 Hermann Oberth published his book “Die Rakete zu den Planetenräumen” (The Rocket into Planetary Space), in 1924 Max Valier's book “Der Vorstoss in den Weltenraum” (The Advance into Space) appeared while in the U.S.A. already in 1919 Robert H. Goddard reported on his rocket experiments. Altogether different from the publications just mentioned was a book entitled “Die Erreichbarkeit der Himmelskörper” (The Attainability of Celestial Bodies) published in 1925. Its author was Dr.-Ing. Walter Hohmann, born 18 March 1880, civil engineer for the city authorities of Essen, who had already made, during World War I, calculations as to the amount of fuel, initial mass and flight time necessary for flights from the Earth to other planets. The transfer trajectories investigated by Hohmann and today attributed with his name have a great practical significance for space flight onto the present. In the lecture a critical appreciation of Hohmann's work is given.  相似文献

The United Nations Programme on Space Applications, implemented by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs, promotes the benefits of space-based solutions for sustainable economic and social development. The Programme assists Member States of the United Nations to establish indigenous capacities for the use of space technology and its applications. In the past the Programme has primarily been focusing on the use of space applications and on basic space science activities. However, in recent years there has been a strong interest in a growing number of space-using countries to build space technology capacities, for example, the ability to develop and operate small satellites. In reaction to this development, the United Nations in cooperation with the International Academy of Astronautics has been organizing annual workshops on small satellites in the service of developing countries. Space technology related issues have also been addressed as part of various other activities of the Programme on Space Applications. Building on these experiences, the Office for Outer Space Affairs is now considering the launch of a new initiative, preliminarily titled the United Nations Basic Space Technology Initiative (UNBSTI), to promote basic space technology development. The initiative would be implemented in the framework of the Programme on Space Applications and its aim would be to help building sustainable capacities for basic space technology education and development, thereby advancing the operational use of space technology and its applications.  相似文献

The general structure of the heliospheric magnetic field is well known and has been extensively studied, mostly in the inner heliosphere, out to the orbit of Saturn. Beyond 10 AU, the Pioneer and now the Voyager spacecraft have provided a view of the outer heliosphere. Its structure is strongly affected by large-scale phenomena originating in the Sun’s activity, such as the pattern of fast and slow solar wind streams around solar minimum that lead to Corotating Interaction Regions, and the increased frequency and strength of Coronal Mass Ejections around solar maximum. The large current sheet that separates the dominant magnetic polarities in the heliospheric medium, the Heliospheric Current Sheet, provides a variable structure that evolves from a relatively simple geometry close to the solar equatorial plane to what is likely to be a highly complex and dynamic surface reaching to high heliolatitudes at high levels of solar activity. The magnetic field observed in a fluctuating, dynamical heliosheath differs considerably from that in a static heliosheath. In particular, the time between current-sheet crossings (sectors) is quite sensitive to the radial speed of the solar-wind termination shock. If an inwardly moving termination shock moves past an observer on a slowly moving spacecraft, the time between current-sheet crossings in the heliosheath becomes larger, and can become very large, for reasonably expected inward shock speeds. This effect may help to explain recent observations of the magnetic field from the Voyager 1 spacecraft, where, in the heliosheath, the magnetic field remained directed outward from the Sun for several months without a current-sheet crossing. The crossings finally resumed and now occur somewhat regularly. In addition, the magnetic fluctuations in the heliosheath are observed to be quite different from those in the supersonic upstream solar wind.  相似文献

The equation of state is one of the three fundamental ingredients used to construct stellar models. The plasma of the interiors of stars such as the Sun is only slightly non-ideal. However, the extraordinary accuracy of the helioseismological data requires refined equations of state. It turned out to be necessary to include a Coulomb correction, commonly evaluated in the Debye-Hückel approximation. Higher-order non-ideal effects have implications as well, both for plasma physics and for solar physics. As a typical example, the recently studied thermodynamic consequence of excited states in compound particles is discussed. This effect is of considerable relevance in the helioseismic determination of the helium abundance in the solar convection zone. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

With the maturing of space plasma research in the solar system, a more general approach to plasma physics in general, applied to cosmic plasmas, has become appropriate. There are both similarities and important differences in describing the phenomenology of space plasmas on scales from the Earth’s magnetosphere to galactic and inter-galactic scales. However, there are important aspects in common, related to the microphysics of plasma processes. This introduction to a coordinated collection of papers that address the several aspects of the microphysics of cosmic plasmas that have unifying themes sets out the scope and ambition of the broad sweep of topics covered in the volume, together with an enumeration of the detailed objectives of the coverage.  相似文献

Since 1971 the UN Programme on Space Applications, implemented by the Office for Outer Space Affairs, has been organizing workshops, symposiums and expert meetings and providing training opportunities in the practical applications of space technology. In 2009 the Office launched the Basic Space Technology Initiative (BSTI). The BSTI encompasses a range of activities in support of capacity building in space technology development in response to the growing interest of academic and governmental organizations in many countries to establish basic, indigenous capabilities to develop nano- and small satellites. Considerations such as the education and training of experts, the creation of required testing and building infrastructure, opportunities for international cooperation and the applicable legal and regulatory frameworks are therefore of particular interest to these organizations. The BSTI aims to assist them with their efforts. This paper describes the origins of the initiative, the activities that have been conducted to date and the work planned for 2011 and beyond.  相似文献
