This paper reviews the present state of knowledge about the magnetic fields and the plasma interactions associated with the major satellites of Jupiter and Saturn. As revealed by the data from a number of spacecraft in the two planetary systems, the magnetic properties of the Jovian and Saturnian satellites are extremely diverse. As the only case of a strongly magnetized moon, Ganymede possesses an intrinsic magnetic field that forms a mini-magnetosphere surrounding the moon. Moons that contain interior regions of high electrical conductivity, such as Europa and Callisto, generate induced magnetic fields through electromagnetic induction in response to time-varying external fields. Moons that are non-magnetized also can generate magnetic field perturbations through plasma interactions if they possess substantial neutral sources. Unmagnetized moons that lack significant sources of neutrals act as absorbing obstacles to the ambient plasma flow and appear to generate field perturbations mainly in their wake regions. Because the magnetic field in the vicinity of the moons contains contributions from the inevitable electromagnetic interactions between these satellites and the ubiquitous plasma that flows onto them, our knowledge of the magnetic fields intrinsic to these satellites relies heavily on our understanding of the plasma interactions with them.  相似文献

Tides raised on a planet by the gravity of its host star can reduce the planet's orbital semi-major axis and eccentricity. This effect is only relevant for planets orbiting very close to their host stars. The habitable zones of low-mass stars are also close in, and tides can alter the orbits of planets in these locations. We calculate the tidal evolution of hypothetical terrestrial planets around low-mass stars and show that tides can evolve planets past the inner edge of the habitable zone, sometimes in less than 1 billion years. This migration requires large eccentricities (>0.5) and low-mass stars ( less or similar to 0.35 M(circle)). Such migration may have important implications for the evolution of the atmosphere, internal heating, and the Gaia hypothesis. Similarly, a planet that is detected interior to the habitable zone could have been habitable in the past. We consider the past habitability of the recently discovered, approximately 5 M(circle) planet, Gliese 581 c. We find that it could have been habitable for reasonable choices of orbital and physical properties as recently as 2 Gyr ago. However, when constraints derived from the additional companions are included, most parameter choices that indicate past habitability require the two inner planets of the system to have crossed their mutual 3:1 mean motion resonance. As this crossing would likely have resulted in resonance capture, which is not observed, we conclude that Gl 581 c was probably never habitable.  相似文献

The Mercury Laser Altimeter (MLA) is one of the payload science instruments on the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission, which launched on August 3, 2004. The altimeter will measure the round-trip time of flight of transmitted laser pulses reflected from the surface of the planet that, in combination with the spacecraft orbit position and pointing data, gives a high-precision measurement of surface topography referenced to Mercury’s center of mass. MLA will sample the planet’s surface to within a 1-m range error when the line-of-sight range to Mercury is less than 1,200 km under spacecraft nadir pointing or the slant range is less than 800 km. The altimeter measurements will be used to determine the planet’s forced physical librations by tracking the motion of large-scale topographic features as a function of time. MLA’s laser pulse energy monitor and the echo pulse energy estimate will provide an active measurement of the surface reflectivity at 1,064 nm. This paper describes the instrument design, prelaunch testing, calibration, and results of postlaunch testing.  相似文献

Conclusion The lunar photography missions have included flyby, impacter, lander, and orbiter spacecrafts. These missions have provided photographs of the far side of the moon and a ten-fold increase in frontside resolution plus higher resolution of selected frontside areas. The resolutions which have been achieved vary from 1 m for the Lunar Orbiter to 1/2 m for the impacting Ranger to millimeters for Luna-IX and the Surveyors. The return from these missions have resolved much of the mystery surrounding the moon. The prime objective of the U.S. photographic missions has been the support of the Apollo-manned lunar landing program. The Ranger program, the Surveyor program, and the Lunar Orbiter program provided a logical progression in the utilization of a developing space exploration technology. These programs have provided the required information and have confirmed that the Apollo landing vehicle design is compatible with the conditions to be experienced on selected areas of the lunar surface. The future manned landing missions can be expected to provide additional lunar photography. Since the astronauts can be more selective in their photography, even more outstanding and informative results should be achieved. The addition of movies and even live television coverage will permit earth-based man to share more directly in the manned exploration of the moon. The unmanned photographic exploration of the moon has provided much of the technology required for similar missions to the planets. The U.S. Mariner-IV was the first successful mission to obtain close-up photographs of the planet Mars. It can be expected that both the U.S.A. and Russia will try for further photographic successes in the exploration of our solar system. This paper presents the results of one phase of research carried out at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, California Institute of Technology, under Contract No. NAS 7-100, sponsored by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.  相似文献

The objective of the Dawn topography investigation is to derive the detailed shapes of 4 Vesta and 1 Ceres in order to create orthorectified image mosaics for geologic interpretation, as well as to study the asteroids?? landforms, interior structure, and the processes that have modified their surfaces over geologic time. In this paper we describe our approaches for producing shape models, plans for acquiring the needed image data for Vesta, and the results of a numerical simulation of the Vesta mapping campaign that quantify the expected accuracy of our results. Multi-angle images obtained by Dawn??s framing camera will be used to create topographic models with 100 m/pixel horizontal resolution and 10 m height accuracy at Vesta, and 200 m/pixel horizontal resolution and 20 m height accuracy at Ceres. Two different techniques, stereophotogrammetry and stereophotoclinometry, are employed to model the shape; these models will be merged with the asteroidal gravity fields obtained by Dawn to produce geodetically controlled topographic models for each body. The resulting digital topography models, together with the gravity data, will reveal the tectonic, volcanic and impact history of Vesta, and enable co-registration of data sets to determine Vesta??s geologic history. At Ceres, the topography will likely reveal much about processes of surface modification as well as the internal structure and evolution of this dwarf planet.  相似文献

This chapter reviews how our knowledge of CMEs and CME-associated phenomena has been improved, since the launch of the SOHO mission, thanks to multi-wavelength analysis. The combination of data obtained from space-based experiments and ground based instruments allows us to follow the space-time development of an event from the bottom of the corona to large distances in the interplanetary medium. Since CMEs originate in the low solar corona, understanding the physical processes that generate them is strongly dependant on coordinated multi-wavelength observations. CMEs display a large diversity in morphology and kinematic properties, but there is presently no statistical evidence that those properties may serve to group them into different classes. When a CME takes place, the coronal magnetic field undergoes restructuring. Much of the current research is focused on understanding how the corona sustains the stresses that allow the magnetic energy to build up and how, later on, this magnetic energy is released during eruptive flares and CMEs. Multi-wavelength observations have confirmed that reconnection plays a key role during the development of CMEs. Frequently, CMEs display a rather simple shape, exhibiting a well known three-part structure (bright leading edge, dark cavity and bright knot). These types of events have led to the proposal of the ‘`standard model’' of the development of a CME, a model which predicts the formation of current sheets. A few recent coronal observations provide some evidence for such sheets. Other more complex events correspond to multiple eruptions taking place on a time scale much shorter than the cadence of coronagraph instruments. They are often associated with large-scale dimming and coronal waves. The exact nature of these waves and the physical link between these different manifestations are not yet elucidated. We also discuss what kind of shocks are produced during a flare or a CME. Several questions remain unanswered. What is the nature of the shocks in the corona (blast-wave or piston-driven?) How they are related to Moreton waves seen in Hα? How they are related to interplanetary shocks? The last section discusses the origin of energetic electrons detected in the corona and in the interplanetary medium. “Complex type III-like events,”which are detected at hectometric wavelengths, high in the corona, and are associated with CMEs, appear to originate from electrons that have been accelerated lower in the corona and not at the bow shock of CMEs. Similarly, impulsive energetic electrons observed in the interplanetary medium are not the exclusive result of electron acceleration at the bow shocks of CMEs; rather they have a coronal origin.  相似文献

We made streamer observations with the Ultraviolet Coronagraph Spectrometer (UVCS) on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) during the early part of 1998, which was a time of moderate solar activity. We present an empirical study of coronal ion kinetics using the line profiles from these observations. Our first and most striking result is that the mid-latitude (ML) streamers have much narrower O VI 1032 Å line profiles than the solar minimum equatorial (SME) streamers. Our second result is that the line profiles from a small collection of ions in ML streamers do not seem to be consistent with the ions having a single temperature and turbulent velocity. We discuss several interpretations, including line of sight (LOS) effects. This article reports on the types of effects changes in the oceans can have on the Earth’s atmosphere and climate and on progress in monitoring and understanding these effects with particular reference to the French–US Topex-Poseidon satellite. It discusses the types of results that are now becoming available and describes some of the future satellites that are set to continue Topex–Poseidon’s work. This article was first published in Elsevier’s Nouvelle Revue d’ Aeronautique et d’ Astronautique, No. 3, May–June 1998.  相似文献

Most of our knowledge of the physical processes in distant plasmas is obtained through measurement of the radiation they produce. Here we provide an overview of the main collisional and radiative processes and examples of diagnostics relevant to the microphysical processes in the plasma. Many analyses assume a time-steady plasma with ion populations in equilibrium with the local temperature and Maxwellian distributions of particle velocities, but these assumptions are easily violated in many cases. We consider these departures from equilibrium and possible diagnostics in detail.  相似文献
