The X-33 program was initiated to develop a testbed for integrated RLV technologies that pave the way for a full scale development of a launch vehicle (Venture Star). Within the Nasa Future X Trailblazer program there is an Upgrade X-33 that focuses on materials and upgrades. The authors propose that the most significant gains can be realized by changing the propulsion cycle, not materials. The cycles examined are rocket cycles, with the combustion in the rocket motor. Specifically, these rocket cycles are: turbopump, topping, expander, air augmented, air augmented ram, LACE and deeply cooled. The vehicle size, volume, structural weight remain constant. The system and propellant tank weights vary with the propulsion system cycle. A reduction in dry weight, made possible by a reduced propellant tank volume, was converted into payload weight provided sufficient volume was made available by the propellant reduction. This analysis was extended to Venture Star for selected engine cycles. The results show that the X-33 test bed could carry a significant payload to LEO (10,000 Ib) and be a valuable test bed in developing a frequent flight to LEO capability. From X-33 published information the maximum speed is about 15,000 ft/sec. With a LACE rocket propulsion system Venture Star vehicle could be sized to a smaller vehicle with greater payload than the Venture Star baseline. The presence of nonprotein α-dialkyl-amino acids such as α-aminoisobutyric acid (α-AIB) and isovaline (Iva), which are considered to be relatively rare in the terrestrial biosphere, has long been used as an indication of the indigeneity of meteoritic amino acids. However, recent work showing the presence of α-AIB and Iva in peptides produced by a widespread group of filamentous fungi indicates the possibility of a terrestrial biotic source for the α-AIB observed in some meteorites. We measured the amino acid distribution and stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition of four α-AIB-containing fungal peptides and compared this data to similar meteoritic measurements. We show that the relatively simple distribution of the C(4) and C(5) amino acids in fungal peptides is distinct from the complex distribution observed in many carbonaceous chondrites. We also identify potentially diagnostic relationships between the stable isotopic compositions of pairs of amino acids from the fungal peptides that may aid in ruling out fungal contamination as a source of meteoritic amino acids. 相似文献

The linear theory of MHD resonant waves in inhomogeneous plasmas is reviewed. The review starts from discussing the properties of driven resonant MHD waves. The dissipative solutions in Alfvén and slow dissipative layers are presented. The important concept of connection formulae is introduced. Next, we proceed on to non-stationary resonant MHD waves. The relation between quasi-modes of ideal MHD and eigenmodes of dissipative MHD are discussed. The solution describing the wave motion in non-stationary dissipative layers is given. It is shown that the connection formulae remain valid for non-stationary resonant MHD waves. The initial-value problem for resonant MHD waves is considered. We investigate how ideas from the International Environmental Agreement (IEA) literature can be applied to the problem of space debris mitigation. Space debris pollution is similar to other international environmental problems in that there is a potential for a “tragedy of the commons” effect: individual nations bear all the cost of their mitigation measures but share only a fraction of the benefit. As a consequence, nations have a tendency to underinvest in mitigation. Coalitions of nations, brought together by IEAs, have the potential to lessen the tragedy of the commons effect by pooling the costs and benefits of mitigation. This work brings together two recent modeling advances: (i) a game theoretic model for studying the potential gains from IEA cooperation between nations with asymmetric costs and benefits, (ii) an orbital debris model that gives the societal cost that specific actions, such as failing to deorbit an inactive spacecraft, have on the environment. We combine these two models with empirical launch-share data for a “proof of concept” of an IEA for a single mitigation measure—deorbiting spacecraft at the end of operational lifetime. Simulations of empirically derived and theoretical launch distributions among nations suggest the possibility that voluntary coalitions can provide significant deorbiting gains relative to nations acting in the absence of an IEA agreement. 相似文献

Dust is an important constituent of cometary emission; its analysis is one of the major objectives of ESA’s Rosetta mission
to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (C–G). Several instruments aboard Rosetta are dedicated to studying various aspects of
dust in the cometary coma, all of which require a certain level of exposure to dust to achieve their goals. At the same time,
impacts of dust particles can constitute a hazard to the spacecraft. To conciliate the demands of dust collection instruments
and spacecraft safety, it is desirable to assess the dust environment in the coma even before the arrival of Rosetta. We describe
the present status of modelling the dust coma of 67P/C–G and predict the speed and flux of dust in the coma, the dust fluence
on a spacecraft along sample trajectories, and the radiation environment in the coma. The model will need to be refined when
more details of the coma are revealed by observations. An overview of astronomical observations of 67P/C–G is given, because
model parameters are derived from this data if possible. For quantities not yet measured for 67P/C–G, we use values obtained
for other comets, e.g. concerning the optical and compositional properties of the dust grains. One of the most important and
most controversial parameters is the dust mass distribution. We summarise the mass distribution functions derived from the
in-situ measurements at comet 1P/Halley in 1986. For 67P/C–G, constraining the mass distribution is currently only possible
by the analysis of astronomical images. We find that both the dust mass distribution and the time dependence of the dust production

The theory of a plasma sheet with medium scale developed turbulence predicts a value for the plasma sheet diffusion coefficient in the Z direction. Its value becomes very near to the diffusion coefficient calculated from the assumption of isotropic turbulence on the basis of ISEE-2 velocity fluctuations in the X and Y directions. INTERBALL/Tail CORALL bulk velocity measurements make it possible to determine velocity fluctuations in the Z direction and calculate the diffusion coefficient in this Z direction. In planetary atmospheres the nature of the aerosols varies, as does the relative importance of different sources of ion production. The nature of the aerosol and ion production is briefly reviewed here for the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Titan using the concepts established for the terrestrial atmosphere. Interactions between the ions formed and aerosols present cause (1) charge exchange, which can lead to substantial aerosol charge and (2) ion removal. Consequences of (1) are that (a) charged aerosol are more effectively removed by conducting liquid droplets than uncharged aerosol and (b) particle–particle coagulation rates are modified, influencing particle residence times in the relevant atmosphere. Consequences of (2) are that ions are removed in regions with abundant aerosol, which may preclude charge flow in an atmosphere, such as that associated with an atmospheric electrical circuit.
