We have selected four widely different flares from the early period of operations of the Hard X-Ray Imaging Spectrometer (HXIS) on SMM to illustrate the characteristic imaging properties of this experiment. For the small flare of April 4, 1980, we demonstrate the instrument's capability for locating a compact source. In the weak, but extensive, flare of April 6 we show how well the instrument can display spatial structure, and also the low level of the instrument background. In the 1B flare of April 7 we are able to locate positions of the X-ray emission in the soft and hard channels, and estimate the positional variations of the emission patches. Finally, in the IN flare of April 10, which produced the strongest hard X-ray burst we have seen so far, we repeat some of the studies made for the April 7 event, and also demonstrate the capability of the HXIS instrument to study the development, with high time resolution, of individual 8″ × 8″ elements of the flare.  相似文献

A method is shown for suppressing the adaptive switching transient that arises in complex adaptive (LMS and stochastic approximation) algorithms due to signal normalization with controlled switched gains. The method involves rescaling of the adaptive weights with the normalizing gains just prior to the first adaptation with the new gains. In addition, an effective method of rescaling the adaptive gain factor based on the maximum eigenvalues of the respective covariance matrices is shown.  相似文献

This paper considers bit synchronization through the use of a separate clock signal which is either amplitude modulated onto or summed with the data signal. For continuous data transmission, such schemes are known to be inferior, in the sense of efficient use of power, to schemes which derive synchronization directly from the data signal. However, these techniques have application in burst systems such as spacecraft command systems, and in systems where receiver simplicity is more important than power conservation. For systems in which the composite data-clock signal subsequently modulates an RF carrier, it is shown that the summed clock signal performs slightly better than the AM clock signal, and that for both signal types, the optimum allocation of power between data and clock is approximately 9:1.  相似文献

Relaxation sounders proved to work very well in dilute plasmas far from the Earth. They provide a very powerful diagnostic tool. In the solar wind and magnetosheath, they give a sure and precise measurement of the electron density. In the magnetosphere, where detailed measurements on the fQ resonances are possible, they provide, in addition, a determination of the electron temperature and drift velocity. Moreover, the possibility of oblique echoes in this region gives the perspective of obtaining even more information on the medium by detailed interpretation of the signals.  相似文献

A spacecraft, that travels at mesothermal speeds, disturbs the plasma in its surroundings. Due to the fade out of the ions an extended negative potential structure is formed behind the probe. A numerical model based on the Vlasov-Poisson system to describe the wake structure of a spacecraft under ionospheric conditions is presented. The dependence of the wake structure on the streaming velocity of the plasma and on the ratio of electron to ion temperature is discussed.  相似文献

We present first results from the Coronal Diagnostic Spectrometer (CDS) aboard the ESA/NASA Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO). CDS is a double spectrometer operating in the 151–785 Å range. This region of the solar spectrum is rich in emission lines from trace elements in the solar atmosphere, which can be used to derive diagnostic information on coronal and transition region plasmas. Early spectra are presented and well identified lines are listed. In addition, examples of images in selected wavelength ranges are shown, for a prominence, a loop system and a bright point, demonstrating well the power of such extreme ultraviolet observations.  相似文献

Line radiation emitted by highly ionized atoms embedded in hot laboratory plasmas can be utilized to obtain collisional rate coefficients for excitation and ionization. After a discussion of the principles underlying these measurements, the plasma device mostly used is explained briefly as are the various experimental techniques. It is argued that space sickness is not so much a physiological problem, but a psychological one, having its roots in the perception of the environment, and its associated cognitive processing. This cognitive processing is argued to be that of field dependence and field independence, for which exist psychobiological and cognitive assessment tests. Since there is an obvious economic advantage in the use of cognite testing, it is recommended that this could be used as an initial screening when selecting for astronauts.  相似文献
