The results are presented of the exposure of Drosophila melanogaster to microgravity conditions during a 15-day biosatellite flight, Biokosmos 9, in a joint ESA-URSS project. The experimental containers were loaded before launch with a set of Drosophila melanogaster Oregon R larvae so that imagoes were due to emerge half-way through the flight. A large number of normally developed larvae were recovered from the space-flown containers. These larvae were able to develop into normal adults confirming earlier results that Drosophila melanogaster of a wild-type constitution can develop normally in the absence of gravity. However, microgravity exposure clearly enhances the number of growing embryos laid by the flies and possibly slows down the developmental pace of the microgravity-exposed animals. Due to some problems in the experimental set-up, this slowing down needs to be verified in future experiments. No live adult that had been exposed to microgravity was recovered from the experiment, so that no life span studies could be carried out, but adult males emerged from the recovered embyros showed a slight shortening in life span and a lower performance in other experimental tests of aging. Stratospheric concentrations of OH have been derived from LIMS measurements of minor constituents. Two methods have been used. Assuming that HNO3 and NO2 are in photochemical steady state, LIMS measurements of these species, with knowledge of appropriate rate constants and a calculation of the HNO3 photolysis rate, allow nearly global fields of OH to be derived. The derived profiles show satisfactory agreement with observations. As a check on our method, OH has also been derived by calculations of its sources and sinks using LIMS measurements of H2O. The two methods agree extremely well in low latitudes. At higher latitudes the agreement is less satisfactory. This is discussed in terms of the diurnal behaviour of the species and the time constant of the HNO3/NO2 equilibrium.  相似文献

Chemolithoautotrophy based on reduced inorganic minerals is considered a primitive energy transduction system. Evidence that a high number of meteorites crashed into the planet during the early period of Earth history led us to test the ability of iron-oxidizing bacteria to grow using iron meteorites as their source of energy. Here we report the growth of two acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacteria, Leptospirillum ferrooxidans and Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans, on a piece of the Toluca meteorite as the only source of energy. The alteration of the surface of the exposed piece of meteorite, the solubilization of its oxidized metal constituents, mainly ferric iron, and the formation of goethite precipitates all clearly indicate that iron-meteorite-based chemolithotrophic metabolism is viable.  相似文献

Gravity and radiation are undoubtedly the two major environmental factors altered in space. Gravity is a weak force, which creates a permanent potential field acting on the mass of biological systems and their cellular components, strongly reduced in space flights. Developmental systems, particularly at very early stages, provide the larger cellular compartments known, where the effects of alterations in the size of the gravity vector on living organisms can be more effectively tested. The insects, one of the more highly evolved classes of animals in which early development occurs in a syncytial embryo, are systems particularly well suited to test these effects and the specific developmental mechanisms affected. Furthermore, they share some basic features such as small size, short life cycles, relatively high radio-resistance, etc. and show a diversity of developmental strategies and tempos advantageous in experiments of this type in space. Drosophila melanogaster, the current biological paradigm to study development, with so much genetic and evolutionary background available, is clearly the reference organism for these studies. The current evidence on the effects of the physical parameters altered in space flights on insect development indicate a surprising correlation between effects seen on the fast developing and relatively small Drosophila embryo and the more slowly developing and large Carausius morosus system. In relation to the issue of the importance of developmental and environmental constraints in biological evolution, still the missing link in current evolutionary thinking, insects and space facilities for long-term experiments could provide useful experimental settings where to critically assess how development and evolution may be interconnected. Finally, it has to be pointed out that since there are experimental data indicating a possible synergism between microgravity and space radiation, possible effects of space radiation should be taken into account in the planning and evaluation of experiments designed to test the potential role of microgravity on biological developmental and evolution.  相似文献

For the investigation of radiative properties of clouds using satellite images an objective parameter is required which is independent of conditions of illumination and of recorders. We found a new parameter - the relative brightness - which seems to serve this purpose. Using the relative brightness the daily amount of surface global radiation can be determined easily by linear regression with sufficient accuracy from METEOSAT images. Period between November 1981 and July 1983 was studied and our results are not worse than the ones using more complicated methods.  相似文献

Results of the wavelet power spectrum (WPS) analysis(which covers the 1969–1998 years) obtained using the daily data of the following parameters: (i) the Mt. Wilson Magnetic Plage Strength index (MPSI), (ii) the solar LDE-type flare index (LDE-FI) and (iii) the Calgary cosmic-ray (CR) intensity, are reported for periods ranging between 64 and 1024 days. The temporal distribution of the WPS during the last three solar activity cycles is extremely discontinuous. A clear resemblance between the CR and LDE-FI WPS is obtained only for the 22nd solar activity cycle. Nevertheless, the CR multiperiod peak, observed in 1982, can well be identified with the WPS peaks obtained in both solar parameters under consideration. In the 21st cycle, we found significant the MPSI periods around 850–880 days (2.3–2.4 yr), while such periods are present in the LDE-FI data of the 22nd cycle. In the CR data we discerned a net periodicity around 650 days (1.7 yr). This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Methods of determining the present flux and total number of kilometer-sized Earth-crossing objects are discussed, including (1) probability considerations based on the frequency of chance rediscoveries of the lost objects, (2) evaluation of large-scale photographic surveys for the detection of fast moving objects, and (3) evaluation of close encounters of interplanetary bodies with the Earth. The results are interfaced with the lunar and terrestrial cratering history. It is shown that the discrepancies between these two independent lines of evidence are still within the margin of uncertainty set by observational biases, cratering efficiencies, and surface reflectivities of the objects, in particular as regards extinct cometary nuclei. Impacts of active comets can only be held responsible for a very small fraction of the craters, and impacts of high-albedo Apollo asteroids are consistent with a steady state. There is no definite enhancement of the present-day flux as compared with the average level of cratering during the last 3 Gyr which would require significant variations in the stellar environment of the solar system, affecting the rate of delivery of new comets from the Oort cloud. There is also no evidence of a recent major collisional event in the asteroid belt. Deviations from an equilibrium between source and sink only become effective in the size range of meteor particles, where no long-term cratering record is available. They are apparently due to a very limited number of parent objects, and appear on a time scale which is very short compared with the age of the solar system.  相似文献

The Atacama along the Pacific Coast of Chile and Peru is one of the driest and possibly oldest deserts in the world. It represents an extreme habitat for life on Earth and is an analog for life in dry conditions on Mars. We report on four years (September 1994-October 1998) of climate and moisture data from the extreme arid region of the Atacama. Our data are focused on understanding moisture sources and their role in creating suitable environments for photosynthetic microorganisms in the desert surface. The average air temperature was 16.5 degrees C and 16.6 degrees C in 1995 and 1996, respectively. The maximum air temperature recorded was 37.9 degrees C, and the minimum was -5.7 degrees C. Annual average sunlight was 336 and 335 W m(-2) in 1995 and 1996, respectively. Winds averaged a few meters per second, with strong f?hn winds coming from the west exceeding 12 m s(-1). During our 4 years of observation there was only one significant rain event of 2.3 mm, which occurred near midnight local time. We suggest that this event was a rainout of a heavy fog. It is of interest that the strong El Ni?o of 1997-1998 brought heavy rainfall to the deserts of Peru, but did not bring significant rain to the central Atacama in Chile. Dew occurred at our station frequently following high nighttime relative humidity, but is not a significant source of moisture in the soil or under stones. Groundwater also does not contribute to surface moisture. Only the one rain event of 2.3 mm resulted in liquid water in the soil and beneath stones for a total of only 65-85 h over 4 years. The paucity of liquid water under stones is consistent with the apparent absence of hypolithic (under-stone) cyanobacteria, the only known primary producers in such extreme deserts.  相似文献
