Links between climate and Earth’s orbit have been proposed for about 160 years. Two decisive advances towards an astronomical theory of palæoclimates were Milankovitch’s theory of insolation (1941) and independent findings, in 1976, of a double precession frequency peak in marine sediment data and from celestial mechanics calculations. The present chapter reviews three essential elements of any astronomical theory of climate: (1) to calculate the orbital elements, (2) to infer insolation changes from climatic precession, obliquity and eccentricity, and (3) to estimate the impact of these variations on climate. The Louvain-la-Neuve climate-ice sheet model has been an important instrument for confirming the relevance of Milankovitch’s theory, but it also evidences the critical role played by greenhouse gases during periods of low eccentricity. It is recognised today that climatic interactions at the global scale were involved in the processes of glacial inception and deglaciation. Three examples are given, related to the responses of the carbon cycle, hydrological cycle, and the terrestrial biosphere, respectively. The chapter concludes on an outlook on future research directions on this topic.  相似文献

Cooperation is a major theme of international space law but the law and history also recognize the existence of competition and conflict. What are the trend lines in terms of promoting collective goods, commercialization and new military uses of space? An overview of selected major laws and policies, as they relate to cooperation, competition and conflict, combined with a theoretical examination of game theory (zero-sum and non-zero sum games), will enable us to obtain an overall understanding of the space age and the choices that space lawyers and policy makers face in the future.  相似文献

The problems are considered of a modelling research of navigation features and improvement of the navigating filters algorithms used in the navigating devices of ground mobile vehicles (MV). It is supposed that the methods and approaches known as real time kinematic (RTK) are incorporated in a basis of researched navigating devices and algorithms. Thus, the measurements from satellite navigating systems such as GLONASS/GPS, and also the measurements from other traditional measuring means (tactile sensors, steering wheel angle and/or inertial measuring instruments) are used in the navigating device of the MV. In the present report we solve the problems and describe the methods of a modeling research of the features of functional units algorithms of the MV navigating processor with account of a satellite navigation set integration with other measuring instruments. The improvement of these devices interaction is made by means of the computer complex "AutoMobil," allowing us to simulate the certain conditions of these navigating tools operation. The imitation computer complex "AutoMobil" for researches of the MV navigation is developed within the frameworks of a programming environment "Delphi-7".  相似文献

In today's world of constrained budgets, one of the problems the military faces is the challenge of trying to maintain organic maintenance capabilities. Historically, the US Air Force has desired to achieve an autonomous capability to maintain the equipment it uses. This has been achieved, traditionally, by setting-up three levels of maintenance: organizational; intermediate (back-shop); and depot. The I-level back-shops often utilize militarized automatic test equipment (ATE) and test program sets (TPSs) to test today's complex aircraft line replaceable units (LRUs). And even though this is still a cost-effective maintenance philosophy, it has become costly to develop militarized ATE. The Department of Defense (DoD) has been very active in trying to reduce the total ownership cost of ATE in the government inventory. One approach is to utilize commercial, instead of Mil-Spec, ATE. However, utilizing commercial ATE at an USAF back-shop is not without its tradeoffs and challenges as it represents a significant deviation from the way the USAF maintenance squadrons are accustomed to "doing business." This paper documents the current success story of replacing the legacy C-17 I-level ATE with a commercial ATE.  相似文献

The designers of any portable computer face a dilemma when choosing the power source for their product. The product can be either smaller and lighter than the competition-and possibly suffer from shorter run-time-or it may have superior run-time at the expense of added weight and volume. The balance between these options is a delicate one that impacts product acceptance and ultimately the manufacturer's revenue stream. Of course a high energy density power source represents only half of the run-time equation. The use of lower power hardware to achieve a given level of functionality can have an equally differentiating effect; and much work is currently underway to improve hardware power efficiency (Fadel, 1993). As levels of circuit integration increase emphasis upon power reduction is critical to achieve reliable operation at a reasonable temperature without some form of active cooling. These diametrically opposed design requirements, small size and light weight versus longer run-time, are set against the backdrop of a quickly changing electronics industry and a battery industry that is inherently slower to develop new products  相似文献

The dosimetric experiments Dose-M and Liulin as part of the more complex French-German-Bulgarian-Russian experiments for the investigation of the radiation environment for Mars-96 mission are described. The experiments will be realized with dosemeter-radiometer instruments, measuring absorbed dose in semiconductor detectors and the particle flux. Two detectors will be mounted on board the Mars-96 orbiter. Another detector will be on the guiderope of the Mars-96 Aerostate station. The scientific aims of Dose-M and Liulin experiments are: Analysis of the absorbed dose and the flux on the path and around Mars behind different shielding. Study of the shielding characteristics of the Martian atmosphere from galactic and solar cosmic rays including solar proton events. Together with the French gamma-spectrometer and the German neutron detectors the investigation of the radiation environment on the surface of Mars and in the atmosphere up to 4000 m altitude will be conducted.  相似文献

We have studied radiation effects utilizing the new 250 MeV Synchrotron at Loma Linda University Medical Center. In this paper we present the data collected for the survival of Chinese hamster lung (V79) cells, that were irradiated with a beam of mixed energy protons up to 200 MeV. The RBE for protons, when compared to 60Co gamma rays, ranged from a low of 1.2 at the high energy portion of the field to 1.3+ at the low energy portion of the field. These results are consistent with the measured lineal energy (microdosimetric) spectra.  相似文献

Winds obtained from geostationary satellites are compared with each other and with rawinsondes. These comparisons serve as a periodic quality check of satellite cloud motions (or winds) set up by the CGMS (Coordination for Geostationary Meteorological Satellites). Differences are taken between colocated cloud motions observed by adjacent satellites in areas of overlapping coverage (Type 1) and between colocated rawinsondes and cloud motions within the field of view of each individual satellite (Type 2).Among colocated satellite winds (Type 1) RMS vector difference of high clouds rarely exceed 10 mps and of low clouds, 6 mps. But, among colocated cloud and balloon vectors (Type 2), RMS vector differences are large. At high levels, differences range from 12 to 40 mps for GMS (Geostationary Meteorological Satellite) winds and from 10 to 18 mps for GOES (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite) winds. The greater disagreement of satellite winds with rawinsonde winds than with each other is attributed in large part to error in the assignment of cloud height especially in the presence of strong vertical shear and to a lesser extent on time differences between cloud and balloon measurements. Both Type 1 and 2 comparisons suffer from separations in distance (tolerated for purposes of establishing “colocation”) between cloud and balloon in the presence of strong horizontal shear. The discrepancy existing between GMS and GOES differences with rawinsondes is attributed primarily to differing techniques of height assignment.At low levels satellite winds departed from balloon winds by a RMS vector difference of about 6 to 9 mps which approached or exceeded the mean wind speed itself. This problem is attributed chiefly to the uncertainty of wind levels controlling the motion of the various low cloud types.  相似文献

Isometric exercise induces profound cardiovascular adaptations increasing mean arterial pressure and heart rate. We investigated effects of simulated +Gz and -Gz respectively on the central and peripheral cardiovascular system. Sustained handgrip exercise was performed at 40% of maximum for 2 minutes in five subjects. This maneuver increased mean arterial pressure by 40-45 mm Hg both during head out water immersion which simulates weightlessness, as well as bedrest during -25, 0, and +25 degrees tilt from the horizontal. Lower body negative pressure (-60 mm Hg for 10 min) attenuated the response to handgrip exercise to 30 mm Hg. It also increased the heart rate minimally by about 20 beats per minute while the water immersion, as well as head up, head down and horizontal bedrest showed increments of about 50 beats per min. It was concluded that the response to isometric contraction is mediated through the high pressure baroreceptors, because similar responses were seen during stresses producing a wide variation in central venous pressure. During lower body negative pressure the increased sympathetic nervous activity itself increased resting heart rate and mean arterial pressure. The responses to static exercise were, therefore, weaker.  相似文献
