Solar energetic particles (SEPs) provide a sample of the Sun from which solar composition may be determined. Using high-resolution
measurements from the Solar Isotope Spectrometer (SIS) onboard NASA’s Advanced Composition Explorer (ACE) spacecraft, we have
studied the isotopic composition of SEPs at energies ≥20 MeV/nucleon in large SEP events. We present SEP isotope measurements
of C, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Ar, Ca, Fe, and Ni made in 49 large events from late 1997 to the present. The isotopic composition
is highly variable from one SEP event to another due to variations in seed particle composition or due to mass fractionation
that occurs during the acceleration and/or transport of these particles. We show that various isotopic and elemental enhancements
are correlated with each other, discuss the empirical corrections used to account for the compositional variability, and obtain
estimated solar isotopic abundances. We compare the solar values and their uncertainties inferred from SEPs with solar wind
and other solar system abundances and find generally good agreement. 相似文献

Aura, the last of the large EOS observatories, was launched on July~15, 2004. Aura is designed to make comprehensive stratospheric
and tropospheric composition measurements from its four instruments, HIRDLS, MLS, OMI and TES. These four instruments work
in synergy to provide data on ozone trends, air quality and climate change. The instruments observe in the nadir and limb
and provide the best horizontal and vertical resolution ever achieved from space. After over one year in orbit the instruments
are nearly operational and providing data to the scientific community. We summarize the mission, instruments, and initial
results and give examples of how Aura will provide continuity to earlier chemistry missions. 相似文献

Previous work has shown how evolutionary algorithms (EAs) are an effective tool in optimising the selection of pulse repetition frequency (PRF) values of medium PRF schedules in an airborne fire control radar (FCR) application requiring target data in three PRFs. The optimisation is driven by the requirement to minimise range/Doppler blindness whilst maintaining full decodability. In this paper we detail work in which the optimisation process is applied to design novel short medium PRF schedules requiring target data in just two PRFs. The paper reports on the testing of a variety of near-optimum schedules to compare their blindness, decoding, and ghosting performances. The results show that in many situations, the 2 of N schedules are a practical alternative to conventional 3 of N processing. 相似文献

The ability of a synthetic aperture radar (SAR) to detect targets under foliage is in part determined by the attenuation suffered by radiation propagating through the foliage and the backscatter from the foliage. MIT Lincoln Laboratory made measurements of foliage attenuation and backscatter using the NASA/JPL-UHF, L-, C-band fully-polarimetric SAR in July 1990. In this experiment, a 48 km2 forested area near Portage, Maine was imaged. Twenty-seven 8 ft trihedral corner reflectors were arrayed throughout the imaged area in order to measure foliage attenuation. Ground truth was recorded at the time of the experiment in order to correlate the attenuation and backscatter results with foliage biophysical properties. Deuterated molecules are detected both in interstellar translucent clouds and in cold dark clouds, as well as in star forming
regions. We review the recent observational studies of deuterated molecules ranging from the VUV to the millimeter wavelength
range. We outline some sources of uncertainties on the deuterium fractionation and on the subsequent derivation of the elemental
deuterium to hydrogen ratio. Steady state versus time dependent models are discussed and the role of initial conditions is
emphasized.

The problem of detecting distributed targets in compound-Gaussian noise with unknown statistics is considered. At the design stage, in order to cope with the a priori uncertainty, we model noise returns as Gaussian vectors with the same structure of the covariance matrix, but possibly different power levels. We also assume that a set of secondary data, free of signal components, is available to estimate the covariance matrix of the disturbance. Since no uniformly most powerful test exists for the problem at hand we devise and assess two detection strategies based on the Rao test, and the Wald test respectively. Remarkably these detectors ensure the constant false alarm rate property with respect to both the structure of the covariance matrix as well as the power levels. Moreover, the performance assessment, conducted also in comparison with the generalized likelihood ratio test based receiver, shows that the Wald test outperforms the others and is very effective in scenarios of practical interest for radar systems. 相似文献

The VLF transmitting system in Cutler, ME currently broadcasts at one frequency through a two-element antenna system. This study investigates simultaneous operation at 24.0 and 17.8 kHz. Detailed nonlinear PSPICE models were generated for the system including the amplifier triodes, saturable dynamic-tuning reactors, and the closely-coupled antenna elements. The predicted behavior is in close agreement with available observations. Upper limits are placed on harmonic content, <-59.8 dBc, and intermodulation distortion, <-78 dBc. 相似文献
