Stable, hydrogen-burning, M dwarf stars make up about 75% of all stars in the Galaxy. They are extremely long-lived, and because they are much smaller in mass than the Sun (between 0.5 and 0.08 M(Sun)), their temperature and stellar luminosity are low and peaked in the red. We have re-examined what is known at present about the potential for a terrestrial planet forming within, or migrating into, the classic liquid-surface-water habitable zone close to an M dwarf star. Observations of protoplanetary disks suggest that planet-building materials are common around M dwarfs, but N-body simulations differ in their estimations of the likelihood of potentially habitable, wet planets that reside within their habitable zones, which are only about one-fifth to 1/50th of the width of that for a G star. Particularly in light of the claimed detection of the planets with masses as small as 5.5 and 7.5 M(Earth) orbiting M stars, there seems no reason to exclude the possibility of terrestrial planets. Tidally locked synchronous rotation within the narrow habitable zone does not necessarily lead to atmospheric collapse, and active stellar flaring may not be as much of an evolutionarily disadvantageous factor as has previously been supposed. We conclude that M dwarf stars may indeed be viable hosts for planets on which the origin and evolution of life can occur. A number of planetary processes such as cessation of geothermal activity or thermal and nonthermal atmospheric loss processes may limit the duration of planetary habitability to periods far shorter than the extreme lifetime of the M dwarf star. Nevertheless, it makes sense to include M dwarf stars in programs that seek to find habitable worlds and evidence of life. Micron-sized cavities created by the actions of rock-etching microorganisms known as euendoliths are explored as a biosignature for life on early Earth and perhaps Mars. Rock-dwelling organisms can tolerate extreme environmental stresses and are excellent candidates for the colonization of early Earth and planetary surfaces. Here, we give a brief overview of the fossil record of euendoliths in both sedimentary and volcanic rocks. We then review the current understanding of the controls upon the distribution of euendolithic microborings and use these to propose three lines of approach for testing their biogenicity: first, a geological setting that demonstrates a syngenetic origin for the euendolithic microborings; second, microboring morphologies and distributions that are suggestive of biogenic behavior and distinct from ambient inclusion trails; and third, elemental and isotopic evidence suggestive of biological processing. We use these criteria and the fossil record of terrestrial euendoliths to outline potential environments and techniques to search for endolithic microborings on Mars. 相似文献

Coronal disturbances lead to geomagnetic storms, proton showers, auroras and a wide variety of other phenomena at Earth. Yet, attempts to link interplanetary and terrestrial phenomena to specific varieties of coronal disturbances have achieved only limited success. Here, several recent approaches to prediction of interplanetary consequences of coronal disturbances are reviewed. The relationships of shocks and energetic particles to coronal transients, of proton events to γ-ray bursts, of proton events to microwave bursts, of geomagnetic storms to filament eruptions and of solar wind speed increases to the flare site magnetic field direction are explored. A new phenomenon, transient coronal holes, is discussed. These voids in the corona appear astride the long decay enhancements (LDE's) of 2–50 Å X-ray emission that follow Hα filament eruptions. The transient holes are similar to long-lived coronal holes, which are the sources of high speed solar wind streams. There is some evidence that transient coronal holes are associated with transient solar wind speed increases. 相似文献

In an attempt to explain the influence of space processing on the microstructure of MnBiBi, eutectic mixtures were directionally solidified with a sudden change of translation rate. The MnBi fiber spacing was able to adapt to the changing freezing rate as predicted by heat transfer computations. We present the results of a study of anomalies, which are defined as differences of seasonal means from the data set seasonal means, in the Earth's radiation budget from the analysis of nine years of ten day mean observations derived from the NOAA polar orbiter satellites for the period, 1974–1983. We estimate that the standard deviation in the outgoing longwave flux for this period is less than 12 Wm?2 and typically 7 Wm?2. The results show that there are several geographical areas for which the standard deviation is in excess of 20 Wm?2; in such regions the radiation budget anomalies exceeded these due to natural atmospheric variability. In this paper we discuss the relationship of these anomalies with climatic change. 相似文献

Recent experimental, inverse and prediction studies have disputed isotropy assumptions for turbulent swirling flows. To cater for the simulation (and hence solution) of these flows, simple turbulence models may be modified or more advanced models developed. NASA-Ames Research Center has investigated the role and performance capabilities of the Landsat Multi-Spectral Scanner (MSS) for forest policy analysis for the past four years in cooperation with the California Department of Forestry. A thorough series of studies, from a statewide land cover map to smaller, highly detailed studies including collateral data, have been conducted with a view to comprehensive forest policy needs. The strengths and limitations of MSS data have been evaluated. With the use of high performance liquid chromatography the products of abiogenic synthesis of adenine nucleotides in solid films were indentified and estimated quantitatively. The main products of photosynthesis appeared to be adenosine and deoxyadenosine monophosphates. Maximal yield of these products in case of adenosine has been 0.36 for 5′AMP, 0.41% for 2′(3′)AMP, 0.20 for 2′3′cAMP; in case of deoxyadenosine 0.13% for 5′dAMP, 0.15% for 3′dAMP, 0.24% for 3′5′cdAMP. The destruction of initial adenosine and deoxyadenosine by the end of the experiment was 10 and 15%, respectively. By the increasing of irradiation dose, 5′AMP and 5′dAMP synthesized in the cource of VUV photolysis were destructed up to adenine, its yield being 15% in both cases. 相似文献

The Magnetometer (MAG) on the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) mission is a low-noise,
tri-axial, fluxgate instrument with its sensor mounted on a 3.6-m-long boom. The boom was deployed on March 8, 2005. The primary
MAG science objectives are to determine the structure of Mercury’s intrinsic magnetic field and infer its origin. Mariner
10 observations indicate a planetary moment in the range 170 to 350 nT R
M3 (where R
M is Mercury’s mean radius). The uncertainties in the dipole moment are associated with the Mariner 10 trajectory and variability
of the measured field. By orbiting Mercury, MESSENGER will significantly improve the determination of dipole and higher-order
moments. The latter are essential to understanding the thermal history of the planet. MAG has a coarse range, ±51,300 nT full
scale (1.6-nT resolution), for pre-flight testing, and a fine range, ±1,530 nT full scale (0.047-nT resolution), for Mercury
operation. A magnetic cleanliness program was followed to minimize variable and static spacecraft-generated fields at the
sensor. Observations during and after boom deployment indicate that the fixed residual field is less than a few nT at the
location of the sensor, and initial observations indicate that the variable field is below 0.05 nT at least above about 3 Hz.
Analog signals from the three axes are low-pass filtered (10-Hz cutoff) and sampled simultaneously by three 20-bit analog-to-digital
converters every 50 ms. To accommodate variable telemetry rates, MAG provides 11 output rates from 0.01 s−1 to 20 s−1. Continuous measurement of fluctuations is provided with a digital 1–10 Hz bandpass filter. This fluctuation level is used
to trigger high-time-resolution sampling in eight-minute segments to record events of interest when continuous high-rate sampling
is not possible. The MAG instrument will provide accurate characterization of the intrinsic planetary field, magnetospheric

MICAS is an integrated multi-channel instrument that includes an ultraviolet imaging spectrometer (80–185 nm), two high-resolution
visible imagers (10–20 μrad/pixel, 400–900 nm), and a short-wavelength infrared imaging spectrometer (1250–2600 nm). The wavelength ranges were chosen
to maximize the science data that could be collected using existing semiconductor technologies and avoiding the need for multi-octave
spectrometers. It was flown on DS1 to validate technologies derived from the development of PICS (Planetary Imaging Camera
Spectrometer). These technologies provided a novel systems approach enabling the miniaturization and integration of four instruments
into one entity, spanning a wavelength range from the UV to IR, and from ambient to cryogenic temperatures with optical performance
at a fraction of a wavelength. The specific technologies incorporated were: a built-in fly-by sequence; lightweight and ultra-stable,
monolithic silicon-carbide construction, which enabled room-temperature alignment for cryogenic (85–140 K) performance, and
provided superb optical performance and immunity to thermal distortion; diffraction-limited, shared optics operating from
80 to 2600 nm; advanced detector technologies for the UV, visible and short-wavelength IR; high-performance thermal radiators
coupled directly to the short-wave infrared (SWIR) detector optical bench, providing an instrument with a mass less than 10
kg, instrument power less than 10 W, and total instrument cost of less than ten million dollars. The design allows the wavelength
range to be extended by at least an octave at the short wavelength end and to ∼50 microns at the long wavelength end. Testing
of the completed instrument demonstrated excellent optical performance down to 77 K, which would enable a greatly reduced
background for longer wavelength detectors. During the Deep Space 1 Mission, MICAS successfully collected images and spectra
for asteroid 9969 Braille, Mars, and comet 19/P Borrelly. The Borrelly encounter was a scientific hallmark providing the first
clear, high resolution images and excellent, short-wavelength infrared spectra of the surface of an active comet’s nucleus. 相似文献
