Remote sounding of high cloud top temperatures by passive methods is a difficult venture due to the semitransparency of the clouds. Window channel measurements often overestimate the cloud top temperature. In this study it is experimentally shown and supported by theoretical considerations that water vapor channels, which are originally intended to sense the high tropospheric water vapor content, are more suitable than window channels. In addition, it is shown that measurements in the H2O rotational band are superior to 6.3 μm channels due to higher intensity of the outgoing radiation and less contribution by scattering by cloud particles.  相似文献

We describe the design, performance and scientific objectives of the NASA-funded ALICE instrument aboard the ESA Rosetta asteroid flyby/comet rendezvous mission. ALICE is a lightweight, low-power, and low-cost imaging spectrograph optimized for cometary far-ultraviolet (FUV) spectroscopy. It will be the first UV spectrograph to study a comet at close range. It is designed to obtain spatially-resolved spectra of Rosetta mission targets in the 700–2050 Å spectral band with a spectral resolution between 8 Å and 12 Å for extended sources that fill its ~0.05^ × 6.0^ field-of-view. ALICE employs an off-axis telescope feeding a 0.15-m normal incidence Rowland circle spectrograph with a toroidal concave holographic reflection grating. The microchannel plate detector utilizes dual solar-blind opaque photocathodes (KBr and CsI) and employs a two-dimensional delay-line readout array. The instrument is controlled by an internal microprocessor. During the prime Rosetta mission, ALICE will characterize comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko's coma, its nucleus, and nucleus/coma coupling; during cruise to the comet, ALICE will make observations of the mission's two asteroid flyby targets and of Mars, its moons, and of Earth's moon. ALICE has already successfully completed the in-flight commissioning phase and is operating well in flight. It has been characterized in flight with stellar flux calibrations, observations of the Moon during the first Earth fly-by, and observations of comet C/2002 T7 (LINEAR) in 2004 and comet 9P/Tempel 1 during the 2005 Deep Impact comet-collision observing campaign.  相似文献

Examples of typical activities in a variety of countries are presented. Exponential mixture probability density functions (pdfs) are shown to be useful models of radar sea clutter. The variability of certain parameters leads to estimation error and degradation in the performance of detection algorithms derived from this model. Robust implementations are introduced by assuming that parameters are known within certain intervals and selecting values to prevent an excessive number of false alarms. An empirical study demonstrates an average 6-9 dB gain in comparison with a constant false-alarm rate (CFAR) processor  相似文献

On the ground the vertical directions "up" and "down" have significance in relation to the strategy for avoiding collision of the skull with the planet. Voluntary acts to this end may be based on the experienced result of reflexly generated motor commands. Relevant receptors lie in the otolith organs of the labyrinth, but the head is seldom steady in waking life. A revised scheme of labyrinth reflexes on the limbs--"downhill limbs extend"--replaces the classical scheme of Magnus. Interactions with neck reflexes according to this scheme serve to stabilize the trunk. In an orbiting spacecraft the pattern of afferent signals from the labyrinth differs from that on the ground, and predictions based on the new scheme are to be tested in the project "Operation Push-Pull" proposed for ESRO's Spacelab. Other activities of the Council of Europe's Working Party on Aerospace Physiology and Medicine are briefly described.  相似文献

Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is a polymer widely used as a radiation shielding material in space flight applications and as a bearing material in total joint replacements. As a long chain hydrocarbon based polymer, UHMWPE’s material properties are influenced by radiation exposure, and prior studies show that gamma irradiation is effective for both medical sterilization and increased wear resistance in total joint replacement applications. However, the effects of space flight radiation types and doses on UHMWPE material properties are poorly understood. In this study, three clinically relevant grades of UHMWPE (GUR 1020, GUR 1050, and GUR 1020 blended with Vitamin E) were proton irradiated and tested for differences in material properties. Each of the three types of UHMWPE was irradiated at nominal doses of 0 Gy (control), 5 Gy, 10 Gy, 20 Gy, and 35 Gy. Following irradiation, uniaxial tensile testing and thermal testing using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Dynamic Mechanical Analysis (DMA) were performed. Results show small but significant changes in several material properties between the control (0 Gy) and 35 Gy samples, indicating that proton irradiation could have a effect on the long term performance of UHMWPE in both medical and space flight applications.  相似文献

The importance of viscous effects on the impact cratering process has been investigated. The shock wave front region was characterized by the balance of inertia and viscous forces (Reynolds number 1), and by a continuous distribution of all thermodynamic quantities. The width of the shock wave front region and its flow properties were then related to the impact particle size and velocity, and to the target material properties. Experimental data for aluminum demonstrated that cratering characteristics were changed when the impact particle size was the same order of magnitude as the shock wave front region. An analytical model was developed for cratering dominated by this “viscous” flow. Results from this model indicate a substantial decrease in crater radius and increase in crater surface temperature when compared with inviscid analysis. In addition, a new test method was identified to evaluate the viscosity of solids.  相似文献
