The Diviner Lunar Radiometer Experiment on NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter will be the first instrument to systematically map the global thermal state of the Moon and its diurnal and seasonal variability. Diviner will measure reflected solar and emitted infrared radiation in nine spectral channels with wavelengths ranging from 0.3 to 400 microns. The resulting measurements will enable characterization of the lunar thermal environment, mapping surface properties such as thermal inertia, rock abundance and silicate mineralogy, and determination of the locations and temperatures of volatile cold traps in the lunar polar regions. 相似文献

InSight’s Seismic Experiment for Interior Structure (SEIS) provides a unique and unprecedented opportunity to conduct the first geotechnical survey of the Martian soil by taking advantage of the repeated seismic signals that will be generated by the mole of the Heat Flow and Physical Properties Package (HP3). Knowledge of the elastic properties of the Martian regolith have implications to material strength and can constrain models of water content, and provide context to geological processes and history that have acted on the landing site in western Elysium Planitia. Moreover, it will help to reduce travel-time errors introduced into the analysis of seismic data due to poor knowledge of the shallow subsurface. The challenge faced by the InSight team is to overcome the limited temporal resolution of the sharp hammer signals, which have significantly higher frequency content than the SEIS 100 Hz sampling rate. Fortunately, since the mole propagates at a rate of \(\sim1~\mbox{mm}\) per stroke down to 5 m depth, we anticipate thousands of seismic signals, which will vary very gradually as the mole travels.Using a combination of field measurements and modeling we simulate a seismic data set that mimics the InSight HP3-SEIS scenario, and the resolution of the InSight seismometer data. We demonstrate that the direct signal, and more importantly an anticipated reflected signal from the interface between the bottom of the regolith layer and an underlying lava flow, are likely to be observed both by Insight’s Very Broad Band (VBB) seismometer and Short Period (SP) seismometer. We have outlined several strategies to increase the signal temporal resolution using the multitude of hammer stroke and internal timing information to stack and interpolate multiple signals, and demonstrated that in spite of the low resolution, the key parameters—seismic velocities and regolith depth—can be retrieved with a high degree of confidence. 相似文献

We report on the development of a passive sorption pump, capable of maintaining high-vacuum conditions in the InSight seismometer throughout the duration of any extended mission. The adsorber material is a novel zeolite-loaded aerogel (ZLA) composite, which consists of fine zeolite particles homogeneously dispersed throughout a porous silica network. The outgassing species within the SEIS evacuated container were analyzed and the outgassing rate was estimated by different methods. The results were used to optimize the ZLA composition to adsorb the outgassing constituents, dominated by water, while minimizing the SEIS bakeout constraints. The InSight ZLA composite additionally facilitated substantial CO2 adsorption capabilities for risk mitigation against external leaks in Mars atmosphere. To comply with the stringent particle requirements, the ZLA getters were packaged in sealed containers, open to the SEIS interior through \(1~\upmu\mbox{m}\)-size pore filters. Results from experimental validation and verification tests of the packaged getters are presented. The pressure forecast based on these data, corroborated by rudimentary in situ pressure measurements, infer SEIS operational pressures not exceeding \(10^{-5}~\mbox{mbar}\) throughout the mission. 相似文献

We present a methodology that provides traceable analysis from stakeholders’ needs to prioritized goals for human space exploration. We first construct a network to represent the stakeholder environment of NASA’s human exploration efforts, then assess the intensity of these stakeholder needs, and build a numerical model to represent the flow of value in the network. The underlying principle is that as a rational actor, NASA should invest its resources in creating outputs that provide the greatest return of support to it. We showcase this methodology, seeded with test data, the results of which suggests that the most important outputs of the exploration endeavor are human and robotic exploration firsts and science data, but also include funding to the science community, providing interesting NASA mission event content directly to the public and to the media, and commercial contracts. We propose that goals should be structured to ensure these value outputs, and be written in such as way as to convey the subsequent creation of value in the network. The goals derived in this manner suggest that the majority of the value created by human space exploration derives from campaign level design, rather than from operation of transportation elements. There would be higher assurance that these value outputs would be delivered if a responsible official or entity within the exploration function was specifically tasked with ensuring stakeholder value creation. 相似文献

Chemical and physical processes in the outer solar nebula are reviewed. It is argued that the outer nebula was a chemically
active environment with UV photochemistry and ion-molecule chemistry in its low density regions and grain-catalyzed chemistry
in Jovian protoplanetary subnebulae. Presolar material was altered to greater or lesser extent by these spatially and temporally
variable processes, which mimic many features of interstellar chemistry. Experiments, models, and observations are recommended
to address the questions of presolar versus nebular dominance in the outer solar nebula and of how to distinguish interstellar
and nebular sources of cometary volatiles.

Theoretical and observational progress in studies of Saturn's ring system since the mid-1980s is reviewed, focussing on advances
in configuration and dynamics, composition and size distribution, dust and meteoroids, interactions of the rings with the
planet and the magnetosphere, and relationships between the rings and various satellites. The Cassini instrument suite of
greatest relevance to ring studies is also summarized, emphasizing how the individual instruments might work together to solve
outstanding problems. The Cassini tour is described from the standpoint of ring studies, and major ring science goals are
summarized.

Direct and indirect observations of interplanetary shock waves have been extended to the study of (i) the shock structure itself; (ii) the disturbed solar wind in its wake; (iii) additional discontinuities such as reverse shocks and pistons; and (iv) the shock's kinematic behavior. The last item — the trajectory — has benefited by the procedure (suggested by Pintér) of matching type II radio drift-inferred velocities with indirectly-inferred initial velocities found from at least two successive measurements in space. The significance of making type II observations at hectometric and kilometric wavelengths (as made, for example, by Slysh and Malitson, Feinberg and Stone) cannot be over-emphasized due to this technique's ability to make unambiguous solar terrestrial relationships. More direct and physically-meaningful observations, however, are still dependent uponin situ plasma and magnetic field measurements. Additional emphasis is presently being placed on numerical modeling of shock-induced disturbances in the solar wind as generated by both flares and stream-stream interactions. The former mechanism is emphasized in this review with several recommendations for further research: (a) further numerical modeling for shocks, starting when they are born within relatively low-Alfvén speed coronal regions; (b) expanded synoptic studies by spacecraft at various heliocentric longitudes, radii, and (eventually) latitudes with coordinated diagnostics; and (c) extended patrol of natural probes, such as comets, augmented with theoretical studies of possible shock-induced mechanical and chemical effects. 相似文献
