Recent spectroscopic measurements from instruments on the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) find that the coronal composition above a polar coronal hole is nearly photospheric. However, similar SOHO observations show that in coronal plasmas above quiet equatorial regions low-FIP elements are enhanced by a factor of ≈ 4. In addition, the process of elemental settling in coronal plasmas high above the solar surface was shown to exist. Measurements by the Ulysses spacecraft, which are based on non-spectroscopic particle counting techniques, show that, with the exception of He, the elemental composition of the fast speed solar wind is similar to within a factor of 1.5 to the composition of the photosphere. In contrast, similar measurements in the slow speed wind show that elements with low first ionization potential (FIP < 10 eV) are enhanced, relative to the photosphere, by a factor of 4-5. By combining the SOHO and Ulysses results, ideas related to the origin of the slow speed solar wind are presented. Using spectroscopic measurements by the Solar Ultraviolet Measurement of Emitted Radiation (SUMER) instrument on SOHO the photospheric abundance of He was determined as 8.5 ± 1.3% (Y = 0.248). This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Induction of DNA double-strand breaks (dsb) and their distribution are dependent on the energy deposition pattern within the cell nucleus (physical structure) and the ultrastructure of the chromosomes and its variation by the cell cycle and gene activities (biological structure). For electron radiation very similar RBE-values are observed for mammalian and yeast cells (AlK, 1.5 keV, 15 keV/micrometer: 2.6 in mammalian cells and 2.2 in yeast; CK 0.278 keV, 23 keV/micrometer: approx. 2.5 in mammalian cells and 3.8 in yeast). In contrast, the RBE-values for the induction of dsb of 4He2+ and light ions in the LET range from about 100 keV/micrometer up to 1000 keV/micrometer are significantly higher for yeast cells compared to mammalian cells. For example, the RBE-value of alpha-particles (120 keV/micrometer) is about 1.2 for mammalian cells whereas for yeast the RBE-value is about 2.5. The yeast chromatin has less condensed fibres compared with mammalian cells. Since a single CK photoelectron can induce only one dsb, the different condensation of the mammalian and yeast chromatin has no influence. However, particles may induce more than one dsb when traversing a chromatin fibre. The probability for the induction of closely neighboured dsb is higher the more condensed the chromatin fibres are. Since small DNA fragments (50 bp up to several kbp) are lost by standard methods of lysis, the underestimation of dsb yields increases with fibre condensation, which is in accordance with the observes dsb yields in mammalian cells and yeast. In order to obtain relevant yields of dsb (and corresponding RBE-values) the measurement of all DNA fragments down to about 50 bp are needed.  相似文献

The NASA Ionospheric Connection Explorer Far-Ultraviolet spectrometer, ICON FUV, will measure altitude profiles of the daytime far-ultraviolet (FUV) OI 135.6 nm and N2 Lyman-Birge-Hopfield (LBH) band emissions that are used to determine thermospheric density profiles and state parameters related to thermospheric composition; specifically the thermospheric column O/N2 ratio (symbolized as \(\Sigma\)O/N2). This paper describes the algorithm concept that has been adapted and updated from one previously applied with success to limb data from the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) on the NASA Thermosphere Ionosphere Mesosphere Energetics and Dynamics (TIMED) mission. We also describe the requirements that are imposed on the ICON FUV to measure \(\Sigma\)O/N2 over any 500-km sample in daytime with a precision of better than 8.7%. We present results from orbit-simulation testing that demonstrates that the ICON FUV and our thermospheric composition retrieval algorithm can meet these requirements and provide the measurements necessary to address ICON science objectives.  相似文献

THEMIS was launched on February 17, 2007 to determine the trigger and large-scale evolution of substorms. During the first seven months of the mission the five satellites coasted near their injection orbit to avoid differential precession in anticipation of orbit placement, which started in September 2007 and led to a commencement of the baseline mission in December 2007. During the coast phase the probes were put into a string-of-pearls configuration at 100 s of km to 2 RE along-track separations, which provided a unique view of the magnetosphere and enabled an unprecedented dataset in anticipation of the first tail season. In this paper we describe the first THEMIS substorm observations, captured during instrument commissioning on March 23, 2007. THEMIS measured the rapid expansion of the plasma sheet at a speed that is commensurate with the simultaneous expansion of the auroras on the ground. These are the first unequivocal observations of the rapid westward expansion process in space and on the ground. Aided by the remote sensing technique at energetic particle boundaries and combined with ancillary measurements and MHD simulations, they allow determination and mapping of space currents. These measurements show the power of the THEMIS instrumentation in the tail and the radiation belts. We also present THEMIS Flux Transfer Events (FTE) observations at the magnetopause, which demonstrate the importance of multi-point observations there and the quality of the THEMIS instrumentation in that region of space.  相似文献

Two Wide-angle Imaging Neutral-atom Spectrometers (TWINS) is a NASA Explorer Mission-of-Opportunity to stereoscopically image the Earth’s magnetosphere for the first time. TWINS extends our understanding of magnetospheric structure and processes by providing simultaneous Energetic Neutral Atom (ENA) imaging from two widely separated locations. TWINS observes ENAs from 1–100 keV with high angular (~4°×4°) and time (~1-minute) resolution. The TWINS Ly-α monitor measures the geocoronal hydrogen density to aid in ENA analysis while environmental sensors provide contemporaneous measurements of the local charged particle environments. By imaging ENAs with identical instruments from two widely spaced, high-altitude, high-inclination spacecraft, TWINS enables three-dimensional visualization of the large-scale structures and dynamics within the magnetosphere for the first time. This “instrument paper” documents the TWINS design, construction, calibration, and initial results. Finally, the appendix of this paper describes and documents the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) instrument calibration facility; this facility was used for all TWINS instrument-level calibrations.  相似文献

The main interactions between the plasma and the spacecraft are the wake effects, the emission of a dense photoelectron cloud and the electric charging of the surface of the spacecraft. An electrostatic particle-in-cell computer simulation model is presented, that allows the simultaneous calculation of these related effects. For different plasma properties, two-dimensional simulations yielded the steady state self-consistent potential distributions around the probe. These potentials, especially the potential barriers produced by the photoelectron cloud, have great influence on the measurements of the low energy solar wind electrons. The essential features can be verified by a comparison with selected electron distributions measured onboard the HELIOS spacecraft.  相似文献

The risk of combined injury (CI) to space travelers is a function of exposure to anomalously large surges of a broad spectrum of particulate and photon radiations, conventional trauma (T), and effects of weightlessness including decreased intravascular fluid volume, and myocardial deconditioning. CI may occur even at relatively low doses of radiation which can synergistically enhance morbidity and mortality from T. Without effective countermeasures, prolonged residence in space is expected to predispose most individuals to bone fractures as a result of calcium loss in the microgravity environment. Immune dysfunction may occur from residence in space independent of radiation exposure. Thus, wound healing would be compromised if infection were to occur. Survival of the space traveler with CI would be significantly compromised if there were delays in wound closure or in the application of simple supportive medical or surgical therapies. Particulate radiation has the potential for causing greater gastrointestinal injury than photon radiation, but bone healing should not be compromised at the expected doses of either type of radiation in space.  相似文献

This paper describes a 12 channel S-band digital beamforming antenna aimed at radar applications. It has a 2.8-3.3 GHz agile band and the signal is sampled at IF. The design of antenna elements, calibration network, receiver modules and signal processing ASIC are discussed. Calibration procedures and experimental results, showing very good performance, are also presented. The purpose of this work is to evaluate design parameters, requirements and limitations  相似文献

We review the mechanisms which are thought to provide steady heating of chromospheres and coronae. It appears now fairly well established that nonmagnetic chromospheric regions of latetype stars are heated by shock dissipation of acoustic waves which are generated in the stellar surface convection zones. In the case of late-type giants there is additional heating by shocks from pulsational waves. For slowly rotating stars, which have weak or no magnetic fields, these two are the dominant chromospheric heating mechanisms.Except for F-stars, the chromospheric heating of rapidly rotating late-type stars is dominated by magnetic heating either through MHD wave dissipation (AC mechanisms) or through magnetic field dissipation (DC mechanisms). The MHD wave and magnetic field energy comes from fluid motions in the stellar convection zones. Waves are also generated by reconnective events at chromospheric and coronal heights. The high-frequency part of the motion spectrum leads to AC heating, the low frequency part to DC heating. The coronae are almost exclusively heated by magnetic mechanisms. It is not possible to say at the moment whether AC or DC mechanisms are dominant, although presently the DC mechanisms (e.g., nanoflares) appear to be the more important. Only a more detailed study of the formation of and the dissipation in small-scale structures can answer this question. The X-ray emission in early-type stars shows the presence of coronal structures which are very different from those in late-type stars. This emission apparently arises in the hot post-shock regions of gas blobs which are accelerated in the stellar wind by the intense radiation field of these stars.  相似文献
