After spending nearly six years in Earth orbit twenty stacks consisting of radiation detectors and biological objects are now back on Earth. These stacks (Experiment A0015 Free Flyer Biostack) are part of the fifty seven science and technology experiments of the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF) of NASA. The major objectives of the Free Flyer Biostack experiments are to investigate the biological effectiveness of single heavy ions of the cosmic radiation in various biological systems and to provide information about the spectral composition of the radiation field and the total dose received in the LDEF orbit. The Biostacks are mounted in two different locations of the LDEF. Up to three layers of Lithium fluoride thermoluminescence dosimeters (TLD) of different isotopic composition were located at different depths of some Biostacks. The preliminary analysis of the TLD yields maximum absorbed dose rates of 2.24 mGy day-1 behind 0.7 g cm-2 shielding and 1.17 mGy day-1 behind 12 g cm-2 shielding. A thermal neutron fluence of 1.7 n cm-2 s-1 is determined from the differences in absorbed dose for different isotopic mixtures of Lithium. The results of this experiment on LDEF are especially valuable and of high importance since LDEF stayed for about six years in the prospected orbit of the Space Station Freedom. There is no knowledge about the effectiveness of the space radiation in long-term spaceflights and the dosimetric data in this orbit are scarce. 相似文献

In order to understand radiation mechanisms of heavy ions in detail, it is necessary to study effects of single ions on individual biological test objects. Spores of Bacillus subtilis have been used as a suitable small biological test system to measure the inactivation in dependence on the radial distance to the tracks of charged particles. Accelerator experiments have been performed using a modified Biostack technique--biological objects sandwiched between nuclear track detectors. Results of these experiments using ions differing in their energy and atomic number will be discussed under following aspects: (i) methodological differences between the experiments and their possible influences on the results, (ii) common features which are independent on the particle type and energy, (iii) theoretical expectations and problems to find solid theoretical concepts which explain the results. 相似文献

In situ observations of comet Halley yielded information on the nucleus and its environment. These measurements are related to properties of and processes at the nucleus by theoretical modelling and by simulation experiments in the laboratory. The objective of the KOSI (Kometensimulation) experiments is to study in detail processes which occur near the surface of ice-dust mixtures under irradiation by light, like heat transport into the sample, chemical fractionation of sample material, emission of gases, and others. The KOSI experiments are carried out at the large space simulation chamber in Köln. By providing an in-depth understanding of potential cometary processes the results from the KOSI experiments are relevant to any comet nucleus sample return mission. 相似文献

Between 1975 and 1983 HELIOS 1 scanned the interplanetary medium between 0.3 and 1 AU 31 times. The observed variations in the differential and integral flux of protons and helium nuclei in the energy range from 4 to >50 MeV/n are characterized by large temporal changes in the intensities, moderate changes in the energy spectrum and changes in the gradient below the detection level (60%). During solar minimum conditions recurrent disturbances are caused mainly by corotating interaction regions. The onset of solar activity near the end of 1977, characterized by a large number of solar events, is accompanied by a monotonous decrease of galactic cosmic radiation. The successive reduction of the cosmic ray intensity to the level of solar maximum is discussed in view of the role of large transient disturbances as compared to processes as diffusion, convection, adiabatic energy losses and drifts. 相似文献

Interstellar dust detected by the dust sensor onboard Ulysses was first identified after the Jupiter flyby when the spacecraft's trajectory changed dramatically (Grün et al., 1994). Here we report on two years of Ulysses post-Jupiter data covering the range of ecliptic latitudes from 0° to –54° and distances from 5.4 to 3.2 AU. We find that, over this time period, the flux of interstellar dust particles with a mean mass of 3·10–13 g stays nearly constant at about 1·10–4, m–2 s–1 ( sr)–1, with both ecliptic latitude and heliocentric distance.Also presented are 20 months of measurements from the identical dust sensor onboard the Galileo spacecraft which moved along an in-ecliptic orbit from 1.0 to 4.2 AU. From the impact direction and speeds of the measured dust particles we conclude that Galileo almost certainly sensed interstellar dust outside 2.8 AU; interstellar particles may also account for part of the flux seen between 1 and 2.8 AU. 相似文献

Genetic engineering has often been suggested as a mechanism for improving the survival prospects of terrestrial microoganisms when seeded on Mars. The survival characteristics that these pioneer microorganisms could be endowed with and a variety of mechanisms by which this can be achieved are discussed, together with an overview of some of the potential hurdles that must be overcome. Eggs of Carausius morosus were exposed to spaceflight conditions in two spaceflight missions, the German 7 day Spacelab Mission D1 and the Soviet 12.56 day Biosatellite Mission "COSMOS 1887". During spaceflight the eggs continued their development. Eggs of five different ages representing different sensitivity to radiation and different capacity to regeneration were used to investigate the influence of cosmic radiation and/or microgravity on insect development. Using the Biostack concept--eggs in monolayers sandwiched between nuclear track detectors--and the 1 g reference centrifuge of BIORACK in D1 we were able to separate effects of heavy ions of the cosmic radiation from microgravity effects and also from combined effects of these two factors in space. After retrieval, hatching rates, embryonic and larval growth kinetics and anomaly frequencies were determined. Microgravity leads to a reduced hatching rate of eggs exposed in the early stages of development. Hatching was normal in eggs which were exposed on the 1 g reference centrifuge. Hits by heavy ions caused body anomalies. The combined action of heavy ions and microgravity resulted in an unexpectedly high frequency of anomalies. These results obtained from the Spacelab Mission D1, were confirmed in an experiment onboard of COSMOS 1887. In addition to the previous analysis, embryonic development before hatching was followed which showed no major difference between flight and the ground control specimens. Since a reconfirmation of reduced hatching rates was observed in COSMOS 1887, too, the above results suggest some microgravity induced functional impairment of the hatching activity, rather than blockage in embryonic development. 相似文献

Anticodons are trinucleotides in transfer RNA (tRNA) molecules. The latter carry amino acids for insertion into the polypeptide sequences of proteins during the translation of messenger RNA (mRNA) molecules. Messenger RNA molecules are transcribed from genes. Evolution of tRNA molecules has resulted in a set of anticodons for the 20 amino acids that are used in protein synthesis. This set of anticodons is slightly different in mitochondrial codes from the set that is used in the nuclear “universal” code. Theories for the evolution of the code include frozen accident, doublet expansion, repeating triplets and coevolutionary distribution. The number of codons has always been fixed at 64 by mathematical rules, but because an anticodon may pair with more than one codon, the number of anticodons is only 54 in the universal code, is smaller in mitochondrial codes, and was probably even smaller in archetypal primitive codes. Evidence of anticodon evolution can be seen by comparing mitochondrial codes with the universal code. Codes used by very primitive organisms that are now extinct might have specified fewer amino acids than are now used. 相似文献

Astrophysical plasmas at temperatures in the range (0.5–5)×105 K that occur e.g. in interstellar space, in the extended atmospheres around stars of essentially all spectral types, including the numerous late-type stars with low photospheric temperatures, and in the atmospheres of highly evolved stars, can best be studied at extreme ultraviolet wavelengths where they release the bulk of their energy. We report here the current development status of a 1m-normal-incidence-EUV-telescope that will be flown on an ARIES rocket to observe the spectra of nearby stars in the 350 – 700 mm range. 相似文献
