Rhythmic phenomena in biology cover a wide frequency spectrum. In Space, the rhythms will encounter microgravity conditions which can, therefore, be a valuable tool for their understanding. A review and discussion of important effects of gravity/absence of gravity on biological systems will be given. Convection will be emphasized as a mechanism which is drastically reduced in Space. Microgravity might also affect the coupling between individual oscillators in a multi-oscillatory system. The environmental interference with rhythms will be discussed with a simple feedback as a starting point. Model simulations will be presented and clinostat and microgravity-conditions will be discussed in a specific case, viz. the gravitropical system of plants which can show sustained oscillations. 相似文献

A fast maximum likelihood algorithm is presented that jointly estimates the frequency and frequency rate of a sinusoid corrupted by additive Gaussian white noise. It consists of a coarse search and a fine search. First the two-dimensional frequency-frequency rate plane is subdivided into parallelograms whose size depends on the region of convergence of Newton's method used in maximizing the log-likelihood function (LLF). The size of the parallelogram is explicitly computed and is optimal for the method used. The coarse search consists of maximizing the LLF over the vertices of the parallelograms. Then starting at the vertex where the LLF attained its maximum, a two-dimensional Newton's method to find the absolute maximum of the LLF is implemented. This last step consists of the fine search. The rate of convergence of Newton's method is cubic, and is extremely fast. Furthermore Newton's method will converge after two iterations when the starting point used in the method lies within 75 percent of the distances defined by the parallelogram of convergence whose center coincides with the true values of frequency and frequency rate. In this case, the root mean square error (RMSEs) for frequency and frequency rate are practically equal to the Cramer-Rao bound at all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR)?15 dB. When the natural logarithm of the surviving fraction is plotted against the dose of radiation, curves with shoulders at relatively high survival levels are obtained after gamma-rays. The curves were practically linear in case of HMV-I and HA-1 cells irradiated by charged particle beams. These cells were derived from human malignant melanoma and Chinese hamster cells, respectively. The amount of DNA single strand breaks (ssb) by gamma-rays or nitrogen-ions (LET=530KeV/micrometers) in HMV-I cells increases linearly with increment in dose, when the ssb is detected using the alkaline elution technique. There is no close relationship between the dose-response curve of the ssb and the dose-survival curves after gamma-rays or N-ions. The amount of DNA double strand breaks (dsb) by gamma-rays increases quadratically with increment of dose, in both HMV-I cells and HA-1 cells, when the dsb is detected using the neutral elution technique. The survival fraction for HA-1 cells is slightly higher than that for HMV-I cells, at the same dose, and the amount of dsb for HA-1 cells is considerably greater than that for HMV-I cells. These results suggest that the radiosensitivities to gamma-rays in different cell lines do not correspond to the number of DNA strand breaks. The amount of both non-repairable ssb and dsb also increases quadratically with increment of dose for gamma-rays and almost linearly with increment of dose for N-ions and alpha-particles (LET=36keV/micrometers for HA-1 cells and LET=77keV/micrometers for HMV-I cells). The dose-response curves for non-repairable dsb in case of these radiations seemed to mirror image the dose-survival curves for these radiations, in both cell lines. The number of non-repairable DNA strand breaks in the two cell lines, at the same level of survival was much the same. In an experiment examining the effects of space radiations on primates, different groups of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) were exposed to single whole-body doses of 32- or 55-MeV protons. Survivors of those exposures, together with age-matched controls, have been monitored continuously since 1964 and 1965. Late effects of nominal proton doses ranging from 2-6 Gray have been measured in vitro using skin fibroblasts from the animals. A logical extension of that study is reported here, and it involves observations of wound healing after 3-mm diameter dermal punches were removed from the ears (pinnae) of control and irradiated monkeys. Tendencies in the reduction of competence to repair cutaneous wounds have been revealed by the initial examinations of animals that received doses greater than 2 Gy more than 2 decades earlier. These trends indicate that this method of assessing radiation damage to skin exposed to high-energy radiations warrants further study. 相似文献

The design of an integrated Russian-VLF/Omega receiver implemented on a TMS320C30-microprocessor-based SPECTRUM plug-in board installed in a PC-compatible portable computer is presented. The system also requires an external antenna, pre-amp, and frequency reference. The SPECTRUM board digitizes the RF signal to 16 b and then digitally mixes with the sines and cosines of the three Russian frequencies plus 10.2, 11-1/3, and 13.6 kHz. The mixer outputs are low-pass filtered, and the comb filters are implemented for the respective epochs. The computer accesses and processes the comb filter outputs, calculating and logging signal phase and amplitude. The energetic particle experiment MEP-2 onboard the Spectr-R high apogee satellite is briefly described. The instrument measures fluxes and spectra of electrons (30 keV–350 keV) and ions (30 keV–3.2MeV), using two pairs of silicon detectors. The example of first observations upstream from the bow shock illustrates its successful operation in space. The main objective of the Mutual Impedance Probe (MIP), part of the Rosetta Plasma Consortium (RPC), is to measure the electron
density and temperature of Comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko’s coma, in particular inside the contact surface. Furthermore,
MIP will determine the bulk velocity of the ionised outflowing atmosphere, define the spectral distribution of natural plasma
waves, and monitor dust and gas activities around the nucleus. The MIP instrumentation consists of an electronics board for
signal processing in the 7 kHz to 3.5 MHz range and a sensor unit of two receiving and two transmitting electrodes mounted

On the basis of data, obtained by means of the ground-based solar service RSTN (Radio Solar Telescope Network) and the geostationary satellite system GOES, the relationship between the solar cosmic rays (SCR) intensity I p with the proton energy E p > 1 MeV and parameters of meter-decameter type II radio bursts in the frequency range of 25–180 MHz is studied. The process of proton acceleration by shock waves was characterized by the frequency drift velocity of radio bursts V mII and the relative difference between radio emission frequencies at the first two harmonics b. It is shown that the coefficient of correlation between I p and b increases with E p growing from 0.40 to 0.70, while a similar coefficient between I p and V mII does not exceed 0.30. Indications in favor of the two-stage SCR acceleration model are obtained. 相似文献

In the central-limit control (CLC), the multiloop controls are employed to regulate the output voltage and track the central weighted current, thus equalizing the output current of each converter module (CM). The current distribution error (CDE) between the output current of each CM is used as a criterion in judging system performance. The prediction and simulation results of this control scheme are illustrated. When incorporated with the maximum current limit, the proposed control method can determine the number of required converters in the active state for each load condition. Since 1990, the orbital complex MIR has witnessed several incubator experiments for determination of spaceflight effects on embryogenesis of Japanese quail. First viable chicks who had completed the whole embryological cycle in MIR microgravity hatched out in 1990; it became clear that newborns would not be able to adapt to microgravity unaided. There were 8 successful incubations of chicks in the period from 1990 to 1999. In 1995-1997 the MIR-NASA space science program united Russian and US investigators. As a result, experiments Greenhouse-1 and 2 were performed with an effort to grow super dwarf wheat from seed to seed, and experiment Greenhouse-3 aimed at receiving two successive generations of Brassica rapa. But results of these experiments could not be used for definitive conclusions concerning effects of spaceflight on plant ontogenesis and, therefore, experiments Greenhouse-4 and 5 were staged within the framework of the Russian national space program. The experiments finally yielded wheat seeds. Some of the seeds was left on the space station and, being planted, gave viable seedlings which, in their turn, produced the second crop of space seeds. 相似文献
