Since 1986, a series of microcosm experiments has been conducted at the Unit of Comparative Plant Ecology (UCPE) in an attempt to test our understanding of the principles controlling the structure and dynamics of plant communities and ecosystems. In each experiment microcosms have been seeded with a common pool of organisms, and systems have been allowed to assemble under replicated controlled conditions. Experiment variables have included mineral nutrient supply, temperature, moisture supply, soil depth, carbon dioxide concentration, mycorrhizas, rhizobia, herbivores and carnivores. Results from these experiments are presented to illustrate the value of synthesised ecosystems in ecological research. 相似文献

During the last decade a large number of radars (~12) have been developed, which have produced substantial quantities of tidally-corrected mean winds data. The distribution of the radars is not global, but many areas are well covered: the Americas with Poker Flat (65°N), Saskatoon (52°N), Durham (43°N), Atlanta (34°N), Puerto Rico (18°N); Europe with Kiruna (68°), Garchy (47°N) and Monpazier (44°N); and Oceania with Christchurch (44°S), Adelaide (35°S), Townsville (20°S), and Kyoto (35°N). Zonal and meridional wind height-time cross-sections from km (MF/Meteor Radar) to ~110 km have been prepared for the last 5–6 years. They are compared with cross-sections from CIRA-72 for zonal winds, and Groves (1969) for meridional winds.It is shown that while CIRA-72 is still a useful model for many purposes, significant differences exist between it and the new radar data. The latter demonstrate important seasonal, latitudinal, longitudinal and hemispheric variations. The new meridional cross-sections are of great value. The common features with Groves (1969) are the equatorward cells in summer near 85 km; however their strength (~10 ms?1) and size are less. Systematic and somewhat different variations emerge at higher (?52°N) and middle (35–44°) latitudes. 相似文献

The aim of the proposed Beagle 2 small lander for ESA's 2003 Mars Express mission is to search for organic material on and below the surface of Mars and to study the inorganic chemistry and mineralogy of the landing site. The lander will have a total mass of 60kg including entry, descent, and landing system. Experiments will be deployed on the surface using a robotic arm. It will use a mechanical mole and grinder to obtain samples from below the surface, under rocks, and inside rocks. Sample analysis by a mass spectrometer will include isotopic analysis. An optical microscope, an X-ray spectrometer and a Mossbauer spectrometer will conduct in-situ rock studies. 相似文献

Ion cyclotron waves (hereafter ICW's) generated in the magnetosphere by the ion cyclotron instability of 10–100 keV protons are now known to be the origin of short-period (0.1–5 Hz) electromagnetic field oscillations observed by synchronous spacecraft and on the earth's surface. Observations of the various wave characteristics, including spectral and polarization properties that lead to the identification of generation and propagation mechanisms and regions in the magnetosphere are described with reference to ATS-6, GEOS and ground-based wave data and interpreted using cold plasma propagation theory. The presence of heavy ions (O+, He+) dramatically modifies ICW magnetospheric propagation characteristics giving rise to spectral slots and polarization reversals. These properties may be used in plasma diagnostics. Finally satellite-ground correlations and techniques for determining the magnetospheric source position of ICW's not seen at synchronous orbit but observed on the ground as structured Pc1 pulsations are considered. 相似文献

The Conference was called to bring together investigators of magnetospheric plasma waves having frequencies from VLF whistlers and emissions down through ELF and ULF to Pc5 long period pulsations. The emphasis was on the physics and techniques underlying the entire frequency range. Topics included wave electron interactions and electron precipitation, ray tracing and other methods to track down sources of VLF and ULF waves, VLF-ULF relationships, heavy ion effects in ULF propagation, and long period ULF waves. 相似文献

We have computed the cloud reflectance and the optical thickness with the aid of atmospheric models from the first eleven months (April 1970 – February 1971) of Backscattered Ultraviolet (BUV) data over the pacific ocean. Both the cloud and the optical thickness are derived from the 380 nm channel by assuming that the entire IFOV (200 Km.) is filled by stratiform clouds. Our analysis show a large variability in the cloud reflectance in both the intertropic conversion zone (ITCZ) and the high latitudes. We also find that for 90% of the time in tropics, the clouds have optical thickness < 10. Our analysis of clouds with optical thickness between 10 and 20 show that in tropics the minimum frequency coincides with the dry zone at 2.5°s and the maximum frequency for clouds of optical thickness 10–20 is greater in summer than in winter and irrespective of the season, 50% of the time the clouds have optical thickness less than 13. 相似文献

One of the most ubiquitous indicators of the state and topology of the magnetosphere are ultra-low frequency (ULF) waves.
These may be continuously and inexpensively monitored from the ground using networks of magnetometers. The most robust measurable
quantity provided by magnetometer networks is signal phase and this paper emphasizes the usefulness of this parameter in a
variety of ULF wave diagnostic processes ranging from equatorial to high latitudes.
