An improved approach for rainfall estimation over Indian summer monsoon region using Kalpana-1 data

In this paper, an improved Kalpana-1 infrared (IR) based rainfall estimation algorithm, specific to Indian summer monsoon region is presented. This algorithm comprises of two parts: (i) development of Kalpana-1 IR based rainfall estimation algorithm with improvement for orographic warm rain underestimation generally suffered by IR based rainfall estimation methods and (ii) cooling index to take care of the growth and decay of clouds and thereby improving the precipitation estimation.     

Time-series analysis of GPS measurements for long-span bridge movements using wavelet and model prediction techniques

This study aims at assessing the safety behavior of the Incheon long-span bridge using high rate (10?Hz) geodetic monitoring global positioning system (GPS). The time series of wavelet spectrum analysis is utilized to assess the dynamic behavior of the bridge. The coefficients and model errors of the time series autoregressive-moving average (ARMA) model are used to evaluate the movement performances of the bridge. The results show that: (i) the accuracy of GPS measurements to extract the dynamic behavior of the bridge is 97.27% when compared with the design results. (ii) the behavior of the bridge is within the safety limits of the bridge design with minimum observed changes for the historical GPS measurements in time and frequency domains, the mean deflection of bridge deck is 8.26?mm and frequency changes of bridge is 0.004?Hz compared with the design results. (iii) the time series analysis of the wavelet spectrum and ARMA model coefficients can be used to detect the significant frequency changes and study the rigidity of the bridge performance, respectively; and the both methods are found to be suitable techniques to estimate the performance changes of the GPS measurements in the time and frequency domains during the monitoring time period.     

Approximate analytical solutions of stability problems for skew plates under combined loading

The known analytical solutions of the linearized stability problems for rectangular hinged plates under the combined loading are generalized to the similar problems for skew plates, the deformation mechanics of which is described by the equations of the classical theory formed in the oblique Cartesian coordinates.     

Experimental study of radial temperature gradient-reducing devices in GTE rotor disks

In this paper, we examine experimentally some devices the principle of action of which is based on using the dynamic pressure of air extracted to engine cooling and which are meant for reducing the radial temperature gradient in GTE rotor disks. We established that the devices equipped with the ejector channels make it possible to accelerate the process of the disk hub heating by hot air suction from the cavity periphery towards the rotor axis of rotation. Using the data of visualization studies, we show the possibility for efficient operation of ejector devices in the conditions of real GTE rotor circumferential velocities.     

A lower bound estimate of the critical load for helicopter main rotor composite blade according to the limit equilibrium theory. The basic steps of an algorithm

The basic steps of an algorithm are given for calculating the parameters of the limiting state of a helicopter main rotor blade. To estimate the static strength, a technique of elastic constants variation is used; it is based on the limit equilibrium theory and enables us to obtain the upper and lower bounds for the critical load simultaneously. An iterative technique is proposed to determine the lower bound of the allowable load on the root section of the composite blade depending on the azimuthal angle of its turn in the helicopter hovering mode.     

Calculation of setup variables for the process of bending and rolling thin-walled components using the finite difference method

A mathematical model of the process of bending and rolling the thin-walled components is presented taking into account the geometrical nonlinearity. Also presented is the technique for calculating the setup variables of bending equipment, which is based on reduction of the initial differential boundary-value problem to the discrete one with the use of the finite difference method.     

Experimental analysis of the breakage of a liquid bridge under microgravity conditions

The experimental results obtained in experiment “STACO” made on board the Spacelab D-2 are re-visited, with image-analysis tools not then available. The configuration consisted of a liquid bridge between two solid supporting discs. An expected breakage occurred during the experiment. The recorded images are analysed and the measured behaviour compared with the results of a three dimensional model of the liquid dynamics, obtaining a much better fit than with linear models.     

Current Status of Simulations

As the title suggests, the purpose of this chapter is to review the current status of numerical simulations of black hole accretion disks. This chapter focuses exclusively on global simulations of the accretion process within a few tens of gravitational radii of the black hole. Most of the simulations discussed are performed using general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) schemes, although some mention is made of Newtonian radiation MHD simulations and smoothed particle hydrodynamics. The goal is to convey some of the exciting work that has been going on in the past few years and provide some speculation on future directions.
