If not, you soon will, IEEE 1394, or Firewire, is an up-and-coming electronics industry standard that will soon be in wide use for interconnecting a massive variety of electronic equipment. It will be used for connecting CD-ROMs and scanners to computers, and it will be used for connecting VCRs, DVDs and satellite dishes to digital televisions. How does this affect Test & Measurement? This paper examines the utility of remote, isolated Antarctic research stations as analogs for long-duration spaceflights from the perspective of psychosocial processes of adaptation and adjustment. Certain features of the physical and man-made environments found in Antarctica are similar to those that will be encountered in outer space. In both settings, men and women are likely to experience a number of physiological and psychological changes in response to the extreme environmental conditions and the prolonged isolation and confinement. Biomedical research in Antarctica provides an opportunity to study the causes of these changes and to develop strategies for reducing the risks to health and well-being before they pose a serious threat to crew safety and mission success. A number of lessons for long-duration spaceflight are examined, including screening and selection of personnel; training programs designed to facilitate individual adjustment and group adaptation and minimize group conflict; identification of optimal leadership characteristics for small, isolated groups; an understanding of social dynamics and group \"microcultures\" necessary for the organization and management of small but heterogeneous groups; organization of work activities; facility design; and support infrastructure. 相似文献

A number of modern spectral estimators are shown to have a common generic formulation. These include minimum variance, MUSIC, and maximum entropy. A new maximum entropy spectral estimator is derived using constraints on the modal powers or the expected-square projections of the data onto the eigenvectors of the data covariance matrix. The formulation incorporates uncertainty in the modal power constraints and the signal-versus-noise subspace separation. The resulting estimators have forms which incorporate all other modern estimators, including maximum entropy and minimum norm. The new estimators allow further development when a priori information is used in the constraints. Comparison of one version of the estimator with the minimum norm verifies the greater probability of resolution of the minimum norm but indicates in some instances the value of the incorporated uncertainties. The placement of multiple antennas on an air vehicle is one possible practice for overcoming signal obstruction created by vehicle maneuvering during air-to-ground transmission. Unfortunately, for vehicle attitudes where more than one of these antennas has a clear path to the receiving station, this practice also leads to self-interference nulls, resulting in dramatic degradation in the average signal integrity. This paper discusses application of unitary space-time codes such as the Alamouti transmit diversity scheme and unitary differential space-time codes to overcome the self-interference effect observed in such systems. The mathematical foundations of these techniques within the context of this application as well as computational performance gains associated with their implementation are provided. A properly weighted measure of histogram distortion is proposed to evaluate data with different time scales for any index in any field.
