The ionic charge states of helium, carbon, oxygen, and iron have been determined for three solar particle enhancements by an electrostatic deflection analyzer, which is combined with a thin window proportional counter dE/dX vs. E system. The observations are obtained during the periods September 23 to 29, 1978, June 6 to 8, 1979, and September 15 to 26, 1979, with an instrument onboard the ISEE-3 spacecraft. The mean ionic charge states for He, C, and oxygen exhibit a high degree of ionization with values of Q = 2, 6, and 7.2, respectively. The charge state of iron is near 13 charge units. Variations from flare to flare and within the September 23, 1978 flare are small. The most surprising feature of the charge state measurement is the observation of a small (~10%) but finite contribution of singly ionized helium. 相似文献

In a phased array antenna, the phase shifters (or T/R modules in an active aperture phased array) with their beam-steering control circuitry along with the feed network account for the major hardware cost. This paper presents two antenna array configurations that use simpler feed, simpler phase-shifting and simpler beam-steering control circuitry for realizing low-cost phased arrays. Both are lens configurations. The first one uses a Radant lens, which provides a medium that is loaded with diodes and provides the needed phase shift by switching the diodes on and off. The other configuration employs a ferroelectric dielectric material whose dielectric constant can be varied with an applied DC bias voltage. A 34-day functional test was conducted in Johnson Space Center's Variable Pressure Growth Chamber (VPGC) to determine responses of a wheat stand to reduced pressure (70 kPa) and modified partial pressures of carbon dioxide and oxygen. Reduced pressure episodes were generally six to seven hours in duration, were conducted at reduced ppO2 (14.7 kPa), and were interrupted with longer durations of ambient pressure (101 kPa). Daily measurements of stand net photosynthesis (Pn) and dark respiration (DR) were made at both pressures using a ppCO2 of 121 Pa. Corrections derived from leakage tests were applied to reduced pressure measurements. Rates of Pn at reduced pressure averaged over the complete test were 14.6% higher than at ambient pressure, but rates of DR were unaffected. Further reductions in ppO2 were achieved with a molecular sieve and were used to determine if Pn was enhanced by lowered O2 or by lowered pressure. Decreased ppO2 resulted in enhanced rates of Pn, regardless of pressure, but the actual response was dependent on the ratio of ppO2/ppCO2. Over the range of ppO2/ppCO2 of 80 to 200, the rate of Pn declined linearly. Rate of DR was unaffected over the same range and by dissolved O2 levels down to 3.1 ppm, suggesting that normal rhizosphere and canopy respiration occur at atmospheric ppO2 levels as low as 11 kPa. Partial separation of effects attributable to oxygen and those related to reduced pressure (e.g. enhanced diffusion of CO2) was achieved from analysis of a CO2 drawdown experiment. Emphasis is placed on predictions of the galactic cosmic-ray flux at high heliographic latitudes. Recent work on gradient and curvature drifts in the large-scale heliospheric magnetic field have modified the traditional argument that the cosmic rays should be essentially unmodulated over the solar poles. In fact, drift effects during the next solar cycle, when the International Solar Polar Mission is to fly, are predicted to cause considerable modulation in the polar regions. However, it is pointed out that the use of conventional drift formulae in the solar wind, which contains magnetic-field fluctuations with large amplitudes and perhaps systematic properties, is highly suspect. Prediction of cosmic-ray behavior over the solar poles is thus currently uncertain. Also considered is the behavior of the anomalous cosmic-ray component at high heliographic latitudes. 相似文献

On the base of the comparative planetologic study of the Moon and terrestrial planets two fundamental features of their history and structure have been established.Firstly, shell-like structure of the terrestrial planets could be understood only in the terms of the heterogeneous accretion theory. At the final stages of major terrestrial planet formation the leading role belonged to the planetosimals of carbonaceous chondritic composition. Secondly, there are two types of the crust on the planetary surface. Their formation are considered to be independent and differing in the geological time. The primary planetary crust of predominantly feldspathic composition is considered to form during the pregeologic period at the final stage of planetary formation due to the impact-explosive processes. The hydrosphere and atmosphere is thought to appear contemporaneously. The basaltic planetary crust is forming later due to the radioactive decay and superimposed on the primary feldspathic crust. 相似文献

New techniques have been evolved for the application of Langmuir probes to the measurement of electron densities in the wakes of hypersonic projectiles flown in ballistic ranges. These techniques concern probe cleanliness, minimization of flow disturbance, minimization of reflected shocks, and the effect of plasma potential. During 1980 and 1981, the 305-m radio telescope at the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico was used to conduct a high resolution search for narrowband signals from the direction of 210 nearby solar type stars and 5 OH masers. For each star at least 4 MHz of bandwidth surrounding the 21-cm HI line and/or the 18-cm OH lines was studied with a spectral resolution of 5.5 Hz in both right and left circular polarization. The formal limit of sensitivity achieved during the course of this search varied depending upon the particular receivers available. In all cases the search could have detected a narrowband transmitter of power comparable to the Arecibo planetary radar, had any such been transmitting on the frequencies searched during the time of observation out to the distance of the farthest target star. As in previous searches, the number of "false alarms" encountered was far greater than predicted on the basis of Gaussian noise statistics. A small number of stars have exhibited signals which cannot immediately be explained in terms of astrophysical or man-made sources and deserve reobservation. This is typical of the results of previous non-real-time searches and does not yet constitute the detection of an ETI. 相似文献

Cosmic-ray scintillations registered by ground-base observations reflect, as a rule, the action of a whole number of processes proceeding in interplanetary space and Earth's magnetosphere. The study of scintillation phenomena in cosmic rays, is, in fact, divided into a number of problems connected with the interaction of charged particles of cosmic radiation with the matter and fields which they encounter in the entire length of their propagation. The cosmic-ray scintillations established by different authors from the data of ground-base and high-altitude devices for quiet and disturbed periods, as well as the theoretical calculations of different models and mechanisms of the origin and development of cosmic-ray scintillations are analyzed. High-frequency scintillations of f 10-5 Hz are shown to be precursors of an approaching shock wave, scintillations with periods of the order of 10–20 and 40–50 min being most sensitive to disturbances of interplanetary medium near the Earth. Since cosmic rays of different energies are sensitive to different processes in interplanetary space at different distances from the Earth, one can sound the conditions in interplanetary medium up to 1015 cm from the Earth by measuring particle fluxes at different energy ranges. 相似文献

A computer simulation model capable of predicting the performance nce of a high-dta-rate end-to-end communication system with adaptive equalization is described in this paper. The model is used to characterize the behavior of NASA's proposed tracking and data relay satellite system (TDRSS), while accounting for signal distortion effects due to operational conditions and the required hardware are components necessary to fulfill mission objectives.
