The instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) receiver is capable of measuring the center frequency of single frequency pulses over a wide range (bandwidth) of center frequencies. Because of various constraints, the frequency resolution requirement results in long correlator delay times that reduce the single correlator bandwidth. A large bandwidth can be achieved only if two or more correlators are used. The problem of estimating frequency is then reduced to the simultaneous congruence problem of number theory. A design procedure is presented for solving the congruence problem for a given amount of noise protection, a stated frequency resolution, a minimum bandwidth, and a fixed level of precision (bits) in the IFM receiver 相似文献

Application of digital cross-correlation spectroscopy to the spectra of the W Serpentis binaries SX Cas and RX Cas has allowed an accurate determination of the orbits and rotations of the (mass-losing) K-subgiant secondary components. The distortion of the primary radial-velocity curves due to the influence of the prominent accretion disks in these systems has been modelled to first order. This enables us to estimate k 1, and thereby the mass ratio q ≈ 0.30, to within ~ ± 20%. The absolute radii of the secondaries are derived independently from the observed rotations and periods, assuming synchronous rotation. They show that the stars fill their Roche lobes, or at least very nearly so. Rough fits to the available photometry shows both primaries to be unevolved mid-B stars; that in RX Cas appears completely obscured by the disk. Preliminary spectroscopic data for W Ser and W Cru show some promise for similar analyses of these systems. 相似文献

Astrometry is the major astronomical technique to measure distances, masses and motions of stars. Dividing astrometric techniques into five types according to the size of the field in which a single instrument can produce measurements, the present achievements of the Earth-based astrometry are described. The astrometric activities such as measurements of star diameters, double star relative positioning or stellar parallaxes, search for invisible companions, photographic plate reduction, visual and photoelectric meridian and astrolable astrometry are reviewed. Then, the methods used to construct a quasi-inertial celestial reference frame and to materialize it by a fundamental catalogue are presented and discussed. A much better definition of an absolute reference frame is made possible by VLBI, but the problem of extending it to stellar positions is not yet satisfactorily resolved.The limitations of the ground based astrometry are: the atmospheric turbulence and refraction, Earth's motions and the impossibility to view the entire sky with a single instrument. These limitations are discussed and it is shown how astrometry from space can overcome them. A priori, a gain of two orders of magnitudes in accuracy for all types of astrometry is expected, but at this new level of precision, new effects and limitations will appear, as already shown in the studies of the approved programs.Then, the ESA astrometric satellite HIPPARCOS presently under development is presented. The satellite and the payload are described as well as the observing procedures. Several limitations, specific to space borne instrumentation and to the milliarc second accuracy expected have been identified. However the main limitation in precision remains the photon noise. The data reduction methods are sketched. The data downlinked at a rate of 20 kilobits per second have to be used with an equal weight all over the 21/2 years of observation. They are expected to yield a mean accuracy of 2 milliarc seconds in position and parallax and 2 m.a.s. per year in proper motion for most of the 100000 stars of the program (M
b < 9). Stars to be observed by HIPPARCOS have to be carefully selected. The main fields in which the results of HIPPARCOS will be used are listed from the proposals made by the scientific community. The task of constructing the HIPPARCOS input catalogue from these proposals is presented.Another feature of the ESA astrometric satellite is the use of the HIPPARCOS star-mapper as a photometric and position survey of the sky. This experiment, called TYCHO, should give at least 400000 star positions with accuracies of the order of 0.03 to 0.15 depending upon the magnitudes. Two colour instantaneous magnitudes should also be obtained to 0.1–0.4 mag. precision.Several Space-Telescope on-board instruments are also capable to make small field astrometric observations. Accurate imaging is possible with the Wide Field and the Faint Object cameras. Lunar occultations will be performed with the High Speed photometer. But the main astrometric mode of the Space Telescope will be the use of the Fine Guidance Sensors to measure the relative positions of stars to ±0.002. It is described together with its main scientific applications.The establishment of an absolute reference frame is subsequently discussed. Plans using simultaneously VLBI, HIPPARCOS, and Space Telescope observations are described. They consist in linking the HIPPARCOS stellar system to quasars via radio-stars or stars in the vicinity of optical quasars.Finally, several space astrometry proposals are described: long focus space astrometry and two versions of space interferometry. 相似文献

The ability to generate rational models of time series plays an important role in such applications as adaptive filtering, spectral estimation, digital control, array processing, and forecasting. A method for effecting an autoregressive moving average (ARMA) model estimate is presented which possesses a number of admirable properties: 1) it has an elegant algebraic structure, 2) its modeling performance in spectral estimation applications has been empirically found to typically exceed that of such contemporary techniques as the periodogram, the Burg method, and the Box-Jenkins method on a variety of problems, 3) it is implementable by computationally efficient algorithms, and 4) it is based on pseudomaximum likelihood concepts. A direction-finding system was built that can simultaneously estimate the arrival angles of two incident signals. It is conceptually straightforward to extend the system to cases with greater numbers of signals. The system is designed to work with uncorrelated signals whose form is unknown, e.g., two communications signals residing in the same bandwidth. Pulsed as well as continuous signals can be handled. An analysis is done to determine the maximum power transfer conditions for full-wave rectifier circuits. Potential applications noted are implanted medical instruments, inductive power transfer to weapons, power transfer using space reflectors, and power generation in space. Three types of series impedances are considered: resistive/inductive (RL), resistive/capacitive (RC), and resistive/inductive/capacitive (RLC). The optimum ratio of ac-to-dc voltage output is determined for each type. For the case that involves all three impedance types, the optimum turning condition is also determined. The differential equations describing the circuits are solved in nondimensional form. The solutions involve partial differential equations, closed-form relationships, and simultaneous equations that are solved by numerical methods. The optimum ratio of peak ac-to-dc voltage ranges from 2.0 to 2.8, depending upon the circuit. The optimum turning differs significantly from the usual resonant conditions, especially for low Q. 相似文献

It is shown that the common series resonant power converter is subject to a low frequency oscillation that can lead to the loss of cyclic stability. This oscillation is caused by a low frequency resonant circuit formed by the normal L and C components in series with the magnetizing inductance of the output transformer. Three methods for eliminating this oscillation are presented and analyzed. One of these methods requires a change in the circuit topology during the resonance cycle. This requires a new set of steady state equations which are derived and presented in a normalized form. An approach to the problem of achieving frame synchronization in the presence of jamming or other large disturbances is presented. It is assumed that the disturbance can be detected at the receiver, which then erases the corresponding bits and passes this information to the synchronizer. A synchronization algorithm designed to operate in the presence of both erasures and background errors is described and evaluated for a representative set of system parameters. Existing heliopause models are critically rediscussed under the new aspect of possible plasma mixing between the solar wind and the ambient ionized component of the local interstellar medium (LISM). Based on current kinetic plasma theories, effective diffusion rates across the heliopause are evaluated for several models with turbulence caused by electrostatic or electromagnetic interactions that could be envisaged in this context. Some specific cases that may lead to high diffusion rates are investigated, especially in regard to their LISM magnetic field dependence.For weak fields (less than 10–7 G), macroscopic hydrodynamic instabilities, such as of Rayleigh-Taylor or Kelvin-Helmholtz-types, can be excited. The resulting plasma mixing rates at the heliopause may amount to 20–30% of the impinging mass flow.Recently, an unconventional new approach to the problem for the case of tangential magnetic fields at the heliopause was published in which a continuous change of the plasma properties within an extended boundary layer is described by a complete set of two-fluid plasma equations including a hybrid MHD-formulation of wave-particle interaction effects. If a neutral sheet is assumed to exist within the boundary layer, the magnetic field direction is proven to be constant for a plane-parallel geometry. Considering the electric fields and currents in the layer, an interesting relationship between the field-reconnection probability and the electric conductivity can be derived, permitting a quantitative determination of either of these quantities.An actual value for the electrical conductivity is derived here on the basis of electron distribution functions given by a superposition of Maxwellians with different temperatures. Using two-stream instability theory and retaining only the most unstable modes, an exact solution for the density, velocity, and magnetic and electric fields can be obtained. The electrical conductivity is then shown to be six orders of magnitude lower than calculated by conventional formulas. Interestingly, this leads to an acceptable value of 0.1 for the reconnection coefficient.By analogy with the case of planetary magnetopauses, it is shown here for LISM magnetic fields of the order of 10–6 G or larger that field reconnection processes may also play an important role for the plasma mixing at the heliopause. The resulting plasma mixing rate is estimated to amount to an average value of 10% of the incident mass flow. It is suggested here that the dependence of the cosmic-ray penetration into the heliosphere on the distribution of reconnecting areas at the heliopause may provide a means of deriving the strength and orientation of the LISM field.A series of observational implications for the expected plasma mixing at the heliopause is discussed in the last part of the paper. In particular, consequences are discussed for the generation of radio noise at the heliopause, for the penetration of LISM neutrals into the heliosphere, for the propagation of cosmic rays towards the inner part of the solar system and for convective electric field mergings into the heliosphere during the course of the solar cycle, depending on the solar cycle variations. With concern to a recent detection of electrostatic plasma waves by plasma receivers on Voyagers 1 and 2, we come to an interesting alternate explanation: the heliopause, rather than the heliospheric shock front, could be responsible for the generation of these waves. 相似文献
